A bunch of things happened on Day 1 of free agency, none of which had anything to do with the Wizards. There was a lot of Dwight Howard stuff, as Ziller wrote about here, and a bunch of other free agents, including Andre Miller, Roy Hibbert, Omer Asik and LaVoy Allen, have or are close to signing new deals. Nothing from the Wizards' end though.
This isn't a surprise, of course. As we've mentioned before, there's no reason to expect the Wizards to be especially active, given their lack of significant cap space and roster spots. The window to use the amnesty clause on Andray Blatche isn't for another nine days, so until then, the Wizards' cap space is tied. They could create about $4 million in room by using the clause on Blatche, but they'd also have to renounce the cap holds for all their free agents. Doing so would forfeit their Larry Bird rights and make it much harder to later re-sign them. The Wizards also have to worry about their payroll down the line.
However, let's pretend the Wizards do have a salary slot equal to the mid-level exception ($5 million/year) that they're willing to spend. To which one free agent in the league would you offer that contract? Let us know in the comments.
