Wizards Vs. 76ers Gameday: Meet The Philadelphia 76ers

New, comments

The Washington Wizards will kick off their short NBA preseason against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night at the Verizon Center. Here are some things to know about the Philadelphia 76ers:

Are they good in general?: They finished 41-41 last season and have most of the same players back, so they're pretty good.

Are they good against the Wizards? They have not played yet this season.

Are they fast or slow? They finished with the 16th-fastest pace in the NBA last season, but they're one of those teams that loves to run the fast break, but runs a very slow half-court offense, which makes that number a bit misleading. Assume they want to play fast.

Are they especially good at anything? Here's a bit of a shocker: the 76ers were the league's number one team in lowest turnover rate. Didn't think that was the case. Otherwise, they're especially good at contesting shots with their length, so the Wizards will need to work extra hard to create open looks.

Are they especially bad at anything? The 76ers don't have a guy who you can give the ball to on offense and say, "GO." That explains why they were 28th in the league in free-throw rate last season.

Are there any people involved with the organization that Mike really likes? I'm a big Thaddeus Young fan, and I think the five-year, $42 million extension the team gave him is fair. He put up an 18.4 PER as a 22-year old last season and causes major mismatches for second-line defenders.

Are there any people involved with the organization that Mike really doesn't like? Spencer Hawes seems like a fun fellow, but he's not a very good NBA center and I'm not seeing much of anything that he does well.

Are there any players poised for a breakout? Watch out for Evan Turner this year. I know he had a bad rookie year, and I know he'll never be a superstar, but he's worked on his jump shot and will be better with a year under his belt.

Are there any players the Wizards especially need to worry about? Not really. It's preseason. If this wasn't a preseason game, I'd keep an eye on Jrue Holiday and Louis Williams. The former is a young point guard that has made huge strides in his career already, and he's a tricky guy to cover on the pick and roll because of his shooting ability. The latter is an outstanding bench scorer that has given the Wizards fits in the past.

Is their mascot cool? Absolutely not.
