In what comes as little shock to me based on everything written here, it appears the Washington Wizards will not be using the Amnesty Clause on Rashard Lewis, according to multiple reports. The most emphatic comes from Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears, who got a quote from Lewis' agent:
Wizards won't be using amnesty clause on F Rashard Lewis, his agent Tony Dutt told Y! Sports. Lewis making $21.1 mil 11-12, $22.6 mill 12-13
This comes on the heels of Michael Lee's report in the Washington Post, where he cites two sources who say the same thing:
Two people with knowledge of the Wizards’ thinking have said that it is unlikely that the team uses the amnesty provision on Lewis or anyone else before this season. But the Wizards could wait and see what players other teams waive, which could add more free agents to the mix.
None of this is surprising. The Wizards seem content to limit their spending to small signings for now, let Lewis' big contract expire and save their powder for later. As Lee reports, the first three calls the Wizards made were to the agents for Nick Young, Maurice Evans and Josh Howard. (Why the latter two, I'm not sure). Ernie Grunfeld will speak to the media tomorrow, where we may get a better idea (or not) of what the Wizards plan to do.
