As I expected, it doesn't look like the Wizards are going to be active during the trade deadline. This nugget comes from the Washington Post.
President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld likes his team's makeup and is looking ahead to the return of Darius Songaila, who practiced on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing back surgery.
Hardly surprising, but it's still interesting to hear it for real. I'm not sure I completely agree with this strategy; after all, you really don't know how well Songaila will come back from his injury. The Wizards still need a solid 4/5 type and could really use a good perimeter defender to occupy the role Jarvis Hayes is supposed to play. Of course, we all know Hayes can't play it right now.
However, at the same time, the Wizards lack any real trade assets (unless you count Hayes' tiny expiring contract) and are already over the cap. They may be better off riding out this season, seeing how it goes, and shoring up weaknesses in the offseason.
Either way, it's interesting to hear this out of the normally tight-lipped Ernie Grunfeld so early. The trade deadline isn't for a month, and yet, the Wizards are already essentially taking themselves out of the circus.
