We're not as far along as we'd like to be, and we're probably right between where we might be and where we thought we might be.

Flip Saunders via Wizards Insider Nothing like starting out the season with a "Huh?" and a "Gaa?" ... I mean, this kinda makes sense, but it's sorta like saying, "It is what it is because at the end of the day, we could be better and we could be worse." Well great, that doesn't make me sleep better or worse tonight. Coach Saunders also elected not to name a starting shooting guard for opening night. What do you guys think? Should he get it over with and name one so everyone can get used to their role? Should he say something to the effect of "It's going to be a platoon situation and I'll go with whomever is playing well"? Or should Flip play it like he's playing it?

I asked Saunders if he still plans on using an eight-man rotation with this roster. Saunders didn't close the door on giving several players the opportunity to contribute. "I'll be honest," he said. "In the past, we played eight, nine man rotation because that's the players that were able to play at the level that we needed them to do it ... When you look at our roster right now, we're solid at every spot. Some people say, 'How are you going to play them all?' That's up for me to decide, actually up to them to decide how we play."

Thank you, Michael Lee. Those who were concerned that we'd only be playing nine guys a night can rest easy. Editor's Note, by Mike: I like hearing Flip say he'll be flexible here. Could just be smoke, but there are a lot of other ways he could have answered this question that would have affirmed the "eight man primarily" position.

Flip Saunders, Wizards. Chance at succeeding: Excellent. Saunders is a gifted offensive coach who is well-known for his extensive, creative playbook. That will fit well with the high-scoring Wizards, assuming they are healthy (Gilbert Arenas especially) and productive. Saunders has a wide array of weapons at his disposal and should be able to push the team’s offense near the top of the league. But one thing Saunders does especially well—and he doesn’t get much credit for it—is formulate defensive schemes that can hide his team’s weaknesses. He has long been on the forefront of employing zones in the NBA, and should be able to come up with something that bolsters what has been a shoddy Wizards defense.

The Baseline. Sean Deveney gets it. He might be overstating the defensive thing a bit, but credit should go to him for recognizing that Flip will actually help the team's defense on some level.

Saunders also wanted to look at the bright side. "The positive is, the four teams that are in front of us are in the Western Conference, we're number one in the East," he said. "We're going to have an opportunity to have potentially the best talent to come into the Eastern Conference." Hmm, didn't look at it that way Flip. Funny that this actually cheered me up a little. Anyone else? Thanks to pookeyguru for the article.

"Sitting out for a year and just watching the league and watching how people do things, I think I became even more entrenched in the belief that how I did things was the right way. You become even more confident and more entrenched." As for the claim that he's too offensive-minded, Saunders said: "People say that our teams didn't defend, but a lot of times stats don't lie." [...] When asked what to expect with the Wizards, who certainly don't have the defensive personnel those Detroit teams had, Saunders vowed: "We'll defend."

The whole article is worth a read, but I thought this passage was worth highlighting. Obviously, there's a difference between saying something and doing it, but at least he didn't come out and say he was just going to help the team play to their strengths and hope it could overcome their weak defense.

A team source said Washington will be looking to hire someone with NBA experience and a solid track record -- a list that'll likely include Flip Saunders, Avery Johnson, Maurice Cheeks, Sam Mitchell and Mike Fratello.

Pretty much what we expected. Now, who do you all like best?

Curry's goal is to keep everyone fresh for the stretch -- which wasn't always the case during former coach Flip Saunders' three-year tenure.

Detroit Free Press When thinking about Flip Saunders, consider this.....much along the lines of a complaint about Eddie Jordan.
