I sort of owe you guys a long one, so apologies for the lateness.

Getting healthy: The news on Caron Butler does not sound good at all.  In fact, I'm getting flashbacks to last year's nagging knee problem that sabotaged a breakout season.  At the very least, he's taking things slowly by not traveling with the team, but seeing as how the Wizards have a history of downplaying injuries, I'm kind of worried.

Growing up: I can't really say enough about the play of Andray Blatche and Dominic McGuire.  Neither were quite as dominant as their rebounding numbers suggest, but they, and not Antawn Jamison, were the reason we won last night, if only because they provided unexpected production.  Now, Toronto is not a strong rebounding team, but there's no reason why we can't see those things more often from these two.  Particularly Blatche, who really has only had a couple good games since the first month.

All this means that, as some of you have suggested in the last thread, we need to try to move Etan Thomas and/or Darius Songaila, particularly the last one.  I can't imagine anyone who'd want Songaila, so I doubt he'd be traded or anything, but I'd like to see his minutes shrink and go instead to Blatche and O-Pec.  It's a difficult situation, because I think we could use a veteran defensive-minded post-up guy, but Songaila is neither defensive-minded nor a post-up guy.  I was hoping we'd see more of him running pick and pops with Antonio Daniels and Roger Mason, but for whatever reason, it hasn't happened as we'd wish.

And I really do not want to see him at center.  If Eddie wants to go small, play Blatche.  Not Songaila.

Where anomalies happen: Last night's game was played at a pretty fast pace, making the Wizards' defense all the more impressive.  I was impressed with how we closed out on shooters, and most importantly, limited Toronto to one shot.  As Ivan wrote in his blog entry, Sam Mitchell was pissed at the Raptors for not rebounding, but it's not Mitchell's fault that there's only one good rebounder on his team (Kris Humphries).  I guess that's why I didn't like the Jason Kapono signing even though he's playing well.  That money could have been used on a rebounder instead.

Anyway, the point is that we shouldn't expect to see such an up-tempo game tonight.  Both teams are in the bottom 10 in pace factor, and both will be tired after last night's thriller.  If the pace slows, that favors Toronto, who has the much better offense right now (sans Butler and Arenas).  I'd say we should try to push the ball, but I don't expect that to happen tonight.

Picking our poison: Toronto's combination of the Jose Calderon/Chris Bosh screen and roll and the myriad of three-point shooters makes for a devastating offensive attack.  Yesterday, we did a great job at defending the three-point shooters, but we allowed Bosh (37 points, 12 rebounds) and Calderon (23 points, 13 assists) to hurt us.  The end result, however, was a win, so we should follow the same blueprint tonight.  Stop the shooters first, and then work your way to the pick and roll.  Just like yesterday.

Keys to the game: Rebounding, again.  Running a more efficient half-court offense.  Not being tired.  Everything that would have been key yesterday.

(I'm grasping at straws here).

This is an open game thread, so remember Juan Dixon here.

GO WIZARDS!

Wiz, over.
But that over is a gimme - if two NBA teams can't combine to score 45.2 points, I'll BASE jump off the the Capitol nude. You might want to check that one :)

But I stood by it yesterday, not changing my picks when I found out Caron was out, and I'll stand by our guys again. Mostly because I think we'll cover an 11 point spread. But I'm hoping for Nick Young and OPEC to show some life in this one, since they got quite a rest yesterday.

Jamison will be tired as hell, and will probably not have a great game tonight.

Wait....
is the over/under on McGuire's boards this game? Because I'll stick with the over.

Picks-
I picked against the wiz last night and then I went to bed and had nightmares about bioterrorism. My wizards addled brain is convinced that the two are related - I picked against my team so I had to suffer as a result. Learned my lesson. Wiz, over.

No Nick Young in rookie game at all star weekend :(

I forgot to write about Juan Dixon -
I'm a MD grad so lots of love for Juan. I still remember that tournament run to the championship happily. They played in the early rounds at Verizon and if I remember correctly beat Connecticut with Caron Butler in the line up.

WIZ OVER!!!!
This is such a great team to watch. They are a testament to the job that Ernie G. did in assembling them. I think Andray is gonna have another big game tonight.
I knew Manute Bol, and you sir are no Manute Bol!

I'll Be the First...
...to comment on that large, steaming piece of dookie that was the Wizards effort tonight.  Between this game and the one against Cleveland several days ago, the Wizards are starting to earn a reputation (at least in my mind) for completely giving up on games.  I've posted this before and I reiterate - good teams never mail it in.  Yeah, they're without Caron, but that was also true last night.  Yeah, they were tired, but so was Toronto.  If the Wizards can beat Toronto one night, then they are capable of losing by less than 15 points the next.  No excuses, this Wizards team should be embarrassed by the way they played.

I started to feel better when I saw that Milwaukee got crushed by the 76ers by over 40 points, but then I remembered that the Wizards somehow managed to lose to a team that is bad enough to be crushed by the 76ers by more than 40 points.  This was just not a good night to be a Wizards fan.  I hope I feel better tomorrow.  Let's all hope that we get some good news regarding Caron's hip.

Kind of bound to happen
I'm plenty happy to have split a pair with Toronto.  The truth is, as much as I don't like seeing the team blown out, this game was probably ungettable.  A couple of things to remember:

-Caron is out, Gil is out.  Toronto was on par with the Wizards' full squad last year.  The Wiz play better defense and have a better bench this year, but there's still no way our squad minus the top two should be able to trounce theirs at full strength two nights in a row.

-Etan is out too.  Not that Etan himself would've made a difference, but we only suited up 10 guys against their 12.  The Wiz just played two overtime games in a row, and both teams were coming off an exhausting overtime session the previous evening.  That clearly benefits the team with a larger quantity of fresh legs.

Overall, the Wiz proved in December that they could beat the bad teams in the league.  They've proven in January that they can beat the good ones too.  I count two wins against Boston, one against Dallas, and one against Toronto as pretty nice work.  February is gonna be a bitch, with a hellish west coast swing, but then we'll start looking at Gil coming back and a playoff matchup.  The Wiz don't need to dominate just yet, and they've made enough strides this month that I'm happy with the results.  This is a good team missing some vital parts due to injuries.  Our young guys have shown they can step up, but relying on youth means dealing with nights when the inexperience shines through.

Let's hope Caron is back and in top form this Friday.  If we can win one of two against the Jazz and the Lakers, that would be a pretty sweet way to end the month.
