Brew Hoop called last night's game "the strangest, least predictable game of the season thus far" which is completely correct, except that I know exactly why the game was so unpredictable and why we lost.  In a blogging first, I'm taking the blame for the loss last night.  I'm doing this for two reasons, one because I spent most of the preview talking about how the Wiz needed to stop Michael Redd and then he didn't even suit up and two because I committed the cardinal sin of fandom: I gave up on the team.  Once the score was 90-79, I tuned out because I was really disappointed with the effort and because I fear that Hedo Turkoglu's game winner might just give him the face time needed to give him the nod over Jamison for the All-Star Game.  As soon as I leave, the Wizards went on a ridonkulous 11-0 run to force overtime and then they had a 4 point lead with 2 minutes to go.

Then I committed the second cardinal sin of fandom: If you quit on the team, don't quit on quitting it.  Obviously if the team goes on some sort of run after you leave, then the problem lies in you, not the team so don't tune back in if they're suddenly back in the game.  NOTE: This theory only applies to crappy fans like me, not the players.  The first person to go "LOL! Ur da Gilbert Arenas of blogging!" gets the ban treatment.  Once I came back, the rest was history.  Mo Williams channeled his inner Pete and just killed it with two back to back threes as soon as I returned and then Royal Ivey hit the craziest shot of his life to seal the deal.

I really wish I was making this up, but I'm not.  The facts are simple, when I wasn't watching the Wiz went on a 20-5 run, the rest of the game the Bucks outscored Washington 100-82.  Needless to say, I learned my lesson and I'm never doing it again.

TiVo Knows Best
I tried TiVoing the game yesterday.  Because it was on CSN+ and not CSN, I had to schedule three one-hour program recordings on C-SPAN2, my Comcast overflow channel.  I specifically remember setting the recordings for the programs at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, and 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

When I sat down to watch the recordings at 9:00 PM, none of the recordings appeared in my "Now Playing" list.  I checked my "To Do" list to see if I had mistakenly scheduled a future date instead of Sunday, and there were no C-SPAN2 programs scheduled to record.  TiVo won't let you schedule recordings in the past, so what happened?  I have a theory.

TiVo has been continually adding new features via automatic firmware downloads that do a better job at anticipating viewer preferences.  It's clear to me that TiVo analyzed my viewing history, determined that I am a rabid Wizards fan, and then analyzed the game recordings.  Determining that this game would yank my emotions around like a yo-yo and then rip my heart out at the end, TiVo decided to automatically delete the recordings rather than than subject me to such torture.

I love my TiVo.  I recommend it to every Wizards fan reading this.

disappointing loss
i tuned in to see the wizards fall to 11 behind and then come back and send it to OT - where they predictably didn't get it done.

they didn't deserve to win the game last night.

my observations:

milwaukee pressed and went zone with a three guard set and the wizards offense appeared to consist solely of:
1 - struggle to get the ball across half court,
2 - fail to get into the offense until half the shot clock has run down,
3 - pass the ball around the three point line, and
4 - jack up a jumper with the shot clock running down (with no one in place to rebound because brendan was flashing in the high post and the other four guys were on the three point line).

their defense consisted of:
1 - getting lost on screens and giving up open looks,
2 - inexplicably dropping off a hot shooter to double-team bogut (with haywood on him), then rotating slowly and giving up a wide open look,
3 - giving up long offensive rebounds when milwaukee did miss.

eddie jordan decided to play songaila for long stretches at center which predictably didn't work, and jamison disappeared down the stretch when he decided he was more of a threat to attack the zone by hanging out around the three point line all 4th quarter.

milwaukee played hard and scrapped. wizards didn't play smart or well. result = bad loss for the wiz.

this is one of those games i wished i hadn't tuned in for.

Good write up
Everyone except Caron looked like crap last night.

I have no idea why we went with Songaila at the 5 for long stretches, when the Bucks had two seven-footers on the court in Yi and Bogut. And EJ wonders why we couldn't get a rebound to save our lives in the second half?

Blatche actually looked OK - but didn't get much burn. I have no idea why the bench was so short last night.

I gave up too
I switched off also and returned to find us only 5 down. Stuck with them the rest of the way.
After each game, we'll all need to post our own personal plus/minus for the minutes we were actually watching. Those with the most negative will be banned from watching live.

-3 suckas!

(I had newspaper, so I didn't watch the game).

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Well, the first step is....
.....Admitting your mistake.

Having learned my lesson about turning off games long ago...I stuck this one out. Plus, live blogging, I didn't really have a choice.

Although, I was definitely calling it over once the Buck lead was 11 with what, 92 seconds left?

Steve Buck and Phil C kept saying that crazy things happen....and it did.

Too bad the Wizards displayed absolutely no energy up until that point.

They got what they were asking for with that swiss cheese zone.

As an addendum
This may or may not have influence why I was a little trigger happy with the remote last night:

Jake
Im glad you have the courage to admit your mistake, but we're still gonna need your playbook and your locker cleaned out.

very dissapointing
We sleepwalked through last nights game, I was also EXTREMELY dissapointed in the effort. Listen, we are NOT the Spurs or the Celtics. We cant just come into a game and think because its the Bucks and they arent very good and on top of that theyre without Redd that we can just sleepwalk through and win the game. So in that sense Im happy that we lost and didnt get away with it, because if we got away with it and won the game maybe they would end up doing it again. Hopefully it never happens again and they learn their lesson making last night the last time it happens.

Caron was the only player I saw playing hard the whole way through last night. The lack of effort, hustle and hard work was very very very dissapointing. I REALLY REALLY hope if never happens again. I dont care what Milwaukees record is, or if theyre without their best player, or that we've beaten WAY better teams in route to 23-13 since the 0-5 start including blowing out the Bucks in that time........ WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO SLEEPWALK THRU GAMES AND GET AWAY WITH IT AGAINST NBA TEAMS, WE ARE NOT THE CELTICS PISTONS SUNS OR SPURS.......... we are a Blazer/Cavaliers/Raptors/Rockets/Nuggets/Magic/etc level team, so WE HAVE TO PLAY HARD AND WITH URGENCY EVERY NIGHT to get where we want to be (4-seed).

Haywood getting lit up by Bogut even worse than he did by Arenas didnt help either, lack of effort from him especially on defense was very concerning. Antonio and Deshawns lack of effort, and THE BENCH'S LACK OF EFFORT ESPECIALLY pissed me off, they came in the game you could CLEARLY see that they didnt come to play as they got demolished while giving up our lead. Dammit, last night was extremely dissapointing....... I can deal with getting beat but not because of a lack of effort, that was terrible..... couldve went to 6 games over .500 before this tough stretch of games up til the allstar break (8 very good opponents and 2 bad teams), we missed an opportunity because we thought we could just show up and win, but we needed to learn I guess so hopefully that teaches us a lesson..... so terrible.....

Getting beat down by Royal Ivey, Michael Ruffin, Charlie Bell and Awvee Storey all because of our lack of effort and sense of entitlement was VERY VERY VERY VERY dissapointing.

I'm sorry
I did the exact same thing. I figured we were done at 90-79 and I started talking to my roommate in the other room and just casually checking the score - before I knew it we had come all the way back. Of course I HAD to stick with the team in OT, and predictably, when my full attention was on the team they choked it away.
I've been known to be right.
