[Weekend editor's note, by JakeTheSnake] The last picture was good, but this one kicks even more than the first, in my opinion. As exciting as this win was, the recap will have to wait a little while because my thoughts are way too sporadic and excited right now to post anything coherent and I've got class early tomorrow and I don't get out until about 2 p.m. so it will be a little while, but until then keep the celebratory comments coming.
To tide you over until then, here's some quick reaction to tonight's game:
Wizards Insider
Les Bullez
Green Bandwagon, with an excellent point about Dave Hopla's impact on the Wizards.
A slight overreaction here.
A slight overreaction, though somewhat accurate.
Antawn Jamison does a hula.
Give it up for the Lock Smith.
SI.com gives the Nick Young dunk contest movement some love.

So that's why my last post failed!
I WAS watching with a diehard Celts fan - but she's my girl so I figured rubbing it in her face wouldn't get me many points tonight...
The Wiz have shown what a little teamwork, coaching, and (dare I say it) defense can do. I mean, 90% on free throws for the 3rd game in a row!? Can we give Dave Hopla a lifetime contract now? Please? I'll even chip in for it. Many props to Ayers for reworking the team's D (something Jordan just couldn't pull off).
Here's my note of caution. Before this season I thought the Celtics were overhyped - they just don't have a lot of depth and I figured they would wear down. Now, they've been insanely good (mainly defensively) up to this point, and about a week ago I admitted that perhaps I was totally wrong. But maybe, just maybe, the first chinks have shown up in the armor. I think both wins were huge - but I think the Celtics are going to have a fight a lot harder for the rest of the year.

Bring on...
BTW, I can't think of a more polar opposite to Caron than the man (sorry, child) on the other side of the trade - Kwame.
Ernie is a genius.

Biggest win in how long?
And as impressed as I was with Caron, I was a lot more impressed with the defense. Down by one with less than a minute left, the only shot the Celtics were able to put up was a looong three by KG. I'll grant that they're getting ground down a bit, but still, our problem has always been that trading buckets can only get you so far. This was just an outstanding defensive effort.
In the past few weeks, we've seen the Wizards blow out the bad teams, play tough defense, and win close ones against good teams. What more can we really ask for?

Never say die for the Wiz
We showed so much poise tonight. So much heart, never-say-die..... playing with so much confidence. Many teams wouldve just packed it in and quit being down by 14 in Boston midway thru the 4th............... not the Wizards.
I have total faith in every single phase of this team right now (And its been that way for about 3 weeks now.).... very well coached, unselfish, great chemistry, playing with a ton of confidence on both ends. They follow the fight of their leader (Caron) and follow him with defensive effort and unselfish offense..... our ball movement is so great with AD stabilizing the PG spot, we dont turn the ball over, everyone is having fun and playing hard because htey know theyll be involved in the offense, we have good inside play, depth, shooters, defenders, rebounding, a very very good 2nd option in Jamison, and a young stud as our main man with Caron..............
Wow. Awesome win tonight. I stand by my "blazer-like run" prediction 100%.

I THINK THE TRUEEST THING TO COME OUT OF THIS GAME

the good kind of wake up call
i hope they wake up and realize that they can play defense for a full 48, even in b2b situations. we shall see tonight if they play inspired vs the knicks or take a game off.

AWESOME!
The Wizards had no business being close with the league's best team on the road while shooting under 40 percent. None at all.
Plus, they were on the short end of at least 7-10 questionable calls and still overcame them.
The Wiz did not quit, kept playing team basketball on offense and defense. Even Twan was rotating effectively on D.
I want to add that in the final seconds Caron nailed 2 huge FTs with one eye basically after being fouled.
Butler's nickname is Tuff Juice for a reason.
This victory will diminish if the Wiz do not come out with the same intensity tonight at MSG.
What a Game!

Yeahhhhhhh!!!!!
First, Caron was a total badass. Billy nailed it -- Tuff Juice is emerging as a franchise player right before our eyes. Not only did he put the team entirely on his back in the final minute offensively, but he pulled down huge, game-clinching rebounds in both Celtics wins, and you can see his vocal leadership during timeouts and stoppages. He is the kind of player who leads winning teams. And to think that we got him in exchange for Kwame. It's like getting a case of Guinness in exchange for a cup of warm spit.
Second, the whole team pitched in. Haywood cutting off the pick and roll, then hustling back to harass KG's shot in the last 30 seconds (and throwing down a nice dunk too); DeShawn hitting a massive three and playing his usual Locksmith defense; Jamison with ANOTHER double-double and hitting a big shot over Ray Allen; AD with 9 assisteses and one turnover. Heck, Blatche came off the bench to hand out two rejection slips -- he's the best bench shotblocker in the league, so don't try to take it in there, OK?!?!?
And let's talk about Dave Hopla. Green Bandwagon nailed it in giving him props. We shot 90 percent from the line in each of the three wins in this streak. If we shoot the league average, each of those games is very different.
Whew. I think I'm hyperventilating, and the game's been over for 14 hours.
Finally, I hope we don't suffer a letdown tonight. The Knicks are playing better and might win even if we don't play poorly, but if there's one team I can't stand handing a game to, it's the goddamn Knicks.

The morning after: still shocked
- To Deshawn, for calling him a waste of space and a shooting guard who can't shoot. DS is playing like a madman on O and D. His 3-ball is absolutely money and his decision making has turned from haphazard to solid these past couple of weeks.
- To Brendan Haywood, for saying "I don't know if I can handle another season with him at center." His improvement has been covered in other posts, but his D on Garnett these past 2 games has been special.
- To Antawn Jamison, for calling him a weak, washed-up schuckster. Even when he was missing shots, Jamison was playing harder than anybody on the floor. His rebounding was key in both games. Plus, when EJ went small w/ the Wiz down by 1 with 24 secs left, Garnett had to guard Jamison. KG was afraid to leave AJ for a split second, and that's all Butler needed to get to the hoop.
- To Randy Ayers, for calling him useless. I don't think we've played defense like this since Wes was coach. At times, I couldn't tell if they were Wiz players on D or hounds unleashed.
- To Eddie Jordan, for doubting his offensive philosophy. I always thought EJ's Princeton-style offense schtick was overrated and that the Wiz just had talented offensive players. But the true test of an offense is not always points per game, but a team's ability to score when they absolutely have to. In both Boston games, the Wiz were aggressive, attacking, and trusting down the stretch, all without their supposed "best" player. That's A-1 solid coaching right there.

I Credit My Son
In all seriousness, though, I think we need to spread the credit around a bit more. Caron was pure superstar, no doubt, but if any of the other Wizards had a let-down, then the game would have been lost. When Caron was asked in the post-game interview by Buck and Phil how the Wizards were able to turn it around in the 4th, he wisely credited the defense. Time and time again the Wizards defense stepped up late in the 4th and got stops. Whereas one player (like Caron) can take over a game offensively, it takes an entire team effort to play clutch defense.
And of course, who can forget that 3-pointer from DeShawn? How big was that? Had he not made that shot, the Wizards lose by about 4 points and everyone here would be talking about the good effort shown last night that came up just short. DeShawn normally can't feel his face after a big shot, but I think after that one he must not have felt his whole body. I swear the ball had ice on it when that rain-maker finally came down. When that shot hit the bottom of the net you could literally see the exasperation on the faces of the Celtics. They played great defense on that posession, they had a hand in DeShawn's face, and they still got punched in the gut. It was after that shot when the Wizards finally realized that they were going to win that game.
All in all, a great win for the Wizards. I couldn't be any happier with the way they've played lately.
