HoopsWorld: Navarro "likely Miami-bound" **MAYBE NOT SEE UPDATE**

According to HoopsWorld, Juan Carlos Navarro is close to becoming a member of the Heat.

With Francis having chosen the Rockets, it's likely that Miami now moves their attentions toward Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro, whose rights are owned by the Washington Wizards. The two teams have been in discussions about the guard all week, but it's been believed that Miami was waiting to see if they'd get Francis or not before pulling the trigger on a deal with the Wizards. Since Francis has officially passed on South Florida Navarro is probably headed there instead, with the most likely deal an exchange of a future draft pick and other considerations. Miami has spent all offseason looking for the perfect point guard to back up Jason Williams, and they may have found him finally in trade instead of free agency.

I haven't heard this anywhere else, so I'm still a little skeptical.  I'm also personally not a huge fan of HoopsWorld -- their articles add little insight to me, and their rumors aren't always correct.  It's also purposely vague on the exchange (what the hell does "other considerations mean").  Still, it's out there somewhere.

I need to go put on my sad face now.  Hopefully, this report is wrong or incomplete.

Update [2007-7-20 13:53:22 by Pradamaster]: Ivan posted a blog about this, and it seems like this saga is far from over. That's a nice relief. Also, he clarifies the JCN situation, which I incorrectly summarized in the comments.

I've heard that Miami has called offering a combination of draft picks but I have no idea what kind of picks they are. Would a first and second get it done? And even if Riley makes a sexy offer, does Ernie Grunfeld really want to help a division rival by handing over an experienced scorer who will also have a chip on his shoulder whenever the Heat comes to town? The wild card in all of this continues to be Memphis. I hear that Pau Gasol has all but demanded that the Grizz do whatever it takes to get JNC.

Bottom line: something is going to get done one way or the other pretty soon. One thing to keep in mind is that Navarro could just say: "forget it" and go back to F.C. Barcelona. In that case, the Wiz would lose any chance of getting something for him. He may not get that sweatheart buyout option ever again.

I imagine Ernie's trying one more time to get Miami to increase their offer, considering the lack of point guards on the market. But the Navarro situation is interesting. We assumed Ernie was negotiating from a position of strength the entire time. Maybe that's not actually the case.

Other Considerations???
Unless "other considerations" means either Shaq or D-Wade, it looks like a very bad deal for the Wizards.  As long as D-Wade stays healthy, the Heat will always be in playoff contention, so their draft picks are almost worthless.

In EG we trust???
if we are seriously trading our only true chip for future high draft picks and the Heat's trash, do we need to safely assume that EG doesn't really think that highly of Navarro?

Correct me if I'm wrong please, but don't we have the option of keeping him overseas and waiting to see the development of Nick Young this upcoming season? Chances are the Heat are going to make the playoffs, so if we got their first rounder next year, in a supposedly weaker draft, wouldn't we be trading JCN for a lesser prospect then Nick Young? I don't see the reasoning behind it.

Maybe EG is looking to get the draft picks in order to make my dream trade...

Jamison / Etan / AD /multiple 1st rounders for KG.

I don't think he can stay overseas
Because he negotiated a buyout with FC Barcelona already.  I could be wrong though.  It's not quite as simple as just letting him go back to Spain, because he isn't under contract their anymore.

Let's not jump the gun quite yet, but yeah, this is quite disappointing if it does happen.

Blockbuster Trade
Maybe EG is looking to get the draft picks in order to make my dream trade...

Jamison / Etan / AD /multiple 1st rounders for KG.

I'd do that if you traded Brendan instead of Etan.  I completely agree with what sierradave said about Brendan vs. Etan in another thread discussion.  Even without Etan on the team, Brendan would be a cancer to the Wizards locker room.

how about...
Don't think Minnesota does that because they get stuck with so much in contracts. How about:

JCN, AD and Etan to Miami
JWill, Jamison, Dorrell Wright, a re-signed Blatche and a 1 to Minnesota.
KG and Trent Hassell to the Wiz

The wolves get over 27 mil in expiring contracts, they get out from under Hassell's contract, an extra pick and a young PF at a reasonable salary.

In the link below I used Songalia to represent Blatche's contract slot.

Another Thing
If the Ernie doesn't package JCN with either Etan or Brendan, then his chances of dumping either of them this off-season will get a lot worse.  The Wizards will have lots of off-court problems if both of those guys have to look at each other in practice another whole year.

I'll see what I can find
but I thought that he has only re-negotiated the amount of what his buyout clause would be, but that the payment has not been made yet as it is pending whatever signing bonus he would receive from signing in the NBA

See the update
Does that clarify anything?

The more I think about it
The more it seems like Ernie's using Miami to get Memphis to up their offer.  If so, that's brilliant.  Remember, Pau desperately wants JCN to play for Memphis, and Chris Wallace isn't exactly the most competent GM out there.

That's the optimist in me talking.

I agree.
It does look like Ernie is basically using Miami as an example: "See how much people want him?" Let's hope Memphis bites.

The other thing that is good about this situation is that Riley is good at pulling off multiple team deals - wasn't he part of that "largest trade in NBA history" a year or two ago? (I might be wrong about this, but I think it was a four team trade and the Heat were one of the teams.)

I'm interest in how this plays out - especially because Miami can't offer us anything we want.

Saw the update--
thank u sir- that is the info i was looking for

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to really believe that Ernie is trying to stockpile draft picks to make a 2nd, larger trade.

We have so many promising young players already, he can't be thinking about adding inexperience to the roster, can he?

Heat draft picks...
I guess I am not completely opposed to getting draft picks from the Heat. Lets just say it is their first and second rounders next year. I like it because, like has been said, we can use those to make a bigger deal down the road. Not to mention, we have had pretty good success with Ernie's second rounders. Also, while putting Navarro on the Heat is tough because they are in our division...taking draft picks from them may be beneficial to us in the long haul. They are an older team with a ton of bad contracts. They wont be able to make their team younger through the draft. They will instead have to work out trades, and they have NO attractive pieces. I dont think anyone is crazy enough to take Walker or Williams' contract. Although the Heat have had our number, I dont see them improving. Hopefully Memphis will get worried and up their deal, I'm all for bringing in Hakim Warrick. Who knows...Im just ready for a deal to happen.

Trade offer
Grizzlies get:
Etan Thomas
Juan Carlos Navarro S&T
Heat 1st Rounder
Heat 2nd Rounder

Why: Gasol / Grizz GM get the SG they covet. Throw in a Heat 1st and 2nd rounder to offset Etan's contract.

Wizards get:
Jason Williams

Why: They dump ETAN'S UNTRADEABLE CONTRACT. They get an EXPIRING CONTRACT to help re-structure their cap to accomodate Gilbert and possibly Jamison's new contract.

Heat get:
Mike Miller

Why: Get something for J-Will's contract. Move Wade to PG, sign the best available PG to back up, and use Miller at SG

Hahahahaha!
This is the most stupid trade scenario I have ever read! only the wizards will benefit in this trade! memphis will suffer on YOUR player's funny contract! nyahahaha! Gasol wants JCN, but their GM is not an idiot.

Clearly you're just egging us on.  Give it a rest.

I'd rather you put this in a diary
But while it's here, it makes little sense for Memphis to simply swap Miller for JCN, IMO, and Miami's paying quite a price for an average shooting guard.

huwat?!
Miller for JCN? you already said it, he's just an average shooting guard. why would memphis swap miller for an average shooting guard? the wizards only want to unload some of their crappy contracts that's why their using the JCN thing which is pretty pathetic. yeah some teams want JCN but they are not stupid to receive any of your team's CANCERS

cancers?
Etan is absolutely NOT a cancer.  He is one of the most well-spoken and intelligent players in the NBA.  I dislike him becuase I do not think he is that talented(or at least good enough to warrant his mammoth contract) but he is great in the locker room.  Daniels also is not a cancer.  He lead the team in the playoffs as well as he could possibly lead them.  He is overpaid a bit which is why we are trying to trade him.  Daniels is still a good player but does not fit our team needs.  Brenden is a cancer, but that was not who you were referencing.  Miller is also an average, but overpaid shooting guard.  Swapping the two seems to benefit Memphis in terms of salary cap relief.  Please stop commenting on things that are just not true.
