Tonight's lines:
Suns at Wizards: Suns by 6.5.
Over/Under on Big 2 scoring: 44.8 points.
Last year's first game against Phoenix was one of the high points of the season. Agent Zero put in 54, Butler had 32, and the Wizards snapped the Suns' long winning streak on the road. It didn't really matter that they returned the favor in the second meeting, because one win on the road against a juggernaut like Phoenix was enough.
Things change tonight, however, without Arenas in the lineup. The Wizards are still playing fast, but not nearly as fast as before, as they rank 13th in pace factor. Meanwhile, as seen above, though Phoenix is still playing at the third-fastest pace in the league, their average posessions a game is up by nearly three from last season. That explains their high point totals, because even though they're quite good offensively, they aren't scoring at as good a rate as last season. This might end up becoming a game of who can control the tempo. We hardly want to make this a halfcourt game, but it's going to be important for the Wizards to work the ball inside, both by posing up Brendan Haywood and by convincing Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison to drive to the rim and draw fouls. Per usual, that won't be easy, as Phoenix leads the league in fewest free throws surrendered per shot attempt.
Offensively, one thing I've noticed about the Suns is that they are more reliant on mid-range jumpers than ever before. Some of that is the acquisition of Grant Hill, but I think the major reason is the change in Amare Stoudamire's game. Last year, only 45 percent of Amare's shots were jumpers, and he had a pedestrian 43.9 eFG% on those shots. This year, 58 percent of his attempts are jumpers, and he's shooting a decent 48.8 eFG% on those. That leads me to believe we can stick Andray Blatche on Stoudamire for stretches and not worry as much about Amare overpowering the youngster.
The key, though, will be getting Amare in foul trouble, because behind him, the Suns only have Brian Skinner, who is mostly a half-court center. That'll get the game into the Wizards tempo, where they can execute the Princeton offense to perfection. Essentially, that's their best chance, because they don't have a guy like Arenas who can draw fouls at a high rate, unless Butler really goes off.
The other big problem is guarding the pick and roll, which is something that really can't be avoided unless Blatche has a big game. AD's powerless to stop Nash, and especially powerless to stick with Leandro Barbosa. Blatche is going to have to trap effectively, and the rest of the defense needs to surrender open mid-range jumpers to Stoudamire instead of three-pointers by Raja Bell and Shawn Marion.
Anyway, this is an open game thread, so relive this moment here.
GO WIZARDS!

Great Entry Post
I just hope the Matrix doesn't kill the Wiz. I hate to say it, but I gotta bad feeling about him tonight.
C-Butler needs to give Grant Hill a good ol' 'Tuff Juice Go-Go Ruff' It Off.
Get inside EARLY and get Amare in foul trouble!!
Heading to the phone booth now. Take notes young cousin.

My report
Our defense just is not good enough to stop a strong, experienced offensive team. This game was much like the recent one in San Antonio. The Wiz didn't play poorly, but they couldn't stop the other team -- like ever. The Suns got pretty much any shot they wanted. They missed a few, but it didn't seem like many. OK, I just peeked at the box score, and they shot 55% from the field -- they didn't miss many.
Our transition defense was even worse than our general defense. EVERY time the Wiz threatened in the first half, the Suns scored -- and they usually came back with a layup in the first five seconds of the shot clock because the Wiz didn't make it back on defense. Keep in mind that this was off of MAKES -- not steals or long rebounds. The Wiz would score to cut the Suns' lead to one, and Barbosa or Stoudemire would instantly be laying the ball in at the other end. Frustrating. Maybe we didn't realize that the Suns like to run and score early in the clock. It's not like there's a book about it or anything.
Several Suns had very good outside shooting nights, but only one Wizard did. I was pretty happy to see Grant Hill taking early threes, since he's generally not a very good long-range shooter, but he drilled a couple down a helped fuel the Suns' big third-quarter run. Likewise Raja Bell. He's a much better three-point shooter than Hill, but I catch the Suns whenever I can on League Pass, and I haven't seen him really get it going much this season. He got it going tonight. Amare Stoudemire also had a flow going. He didn't jack up any threes, but most of his early buckets were 12-18 footers, and that helped free him up for a bunch of dunks later in the game.
By contrast, only one Wizard was hitting consistently from the outside: Roger Mason, but most of his buckets came after the Suns had made their move in the third quarter and the outcome was largely decided.
Neither Caron Butler nor Antawn Jamison had a particularly good game. Tuff Juice finished with 12, and AJ had 16, along with 11 boards, but neither shot well, and both were pretty much nullified by their Phoenix counterparts. Do the Wizards have any chance of winning when neither Butler nor Jamison has a good offensive game?
My first good look at the Wiz this year was the Dallas preseason game, and I thought during that game that Blatche played well, but he seemed to have trouble finishing in traffic. I don't know if he just had a good game tonight or what, but he was finishing around the basket, and he just looked solid. Haywood was all right too, but Eddie declined t play them together. I guess it's not the right opponent for that.
I think Roger Mason is a fine guy to have deep on your bench -- a true pro who can do at least one thing well (shooting) and is always ready to play. But he's just not good enough to demand big minutes on a good team, and I don't understand why he played such big minutes tonight. Granted, he had a good shooting night, but he's a sieve defensively, and he can't to ANYTHING else offensively but shoot from the outside. He doesn't make plays for anyone else (even though he was playing PG for most of the time he got), and he doesn't get to the basket. Most of his minutes seemed to come at DeShawn's expense, and Stevenson had another crummy shooting performance, but Mason just stands out as a weak point when he's in the game. Sort of like Jarvis last year.
