Tonight's lines:
Sixers at Wizards: Wizards by 6.5
Over/Under on Big 3 scoring: 64.9 points.

Tonight's a big night, as Calvin Booth makes his triumphant return to the Verizon Center.

Okay, so maybe this isn't the sexiest game on the schedule, but it definitely offers us an opportunity to keep things going. Philly is 3-6, with with over Charlotte, Chicago, and Portland this year. Andre Iguodala is a nice player, but he's not at his best right now, and Andre Miller is really struggling. On the surface, this looks like a pretty easy win.

When thinking about Philly, one thing that surprised me was that number 6 ranking in defensive efficiency. Maurice Cheeks has lots of problems, but he deserves credit for getting this team to play defense. Philly is fourth in the league in turnover rate, 10th in lowest offensive rebound percentage, and 11th in effective field goal percentage. Iguodala is a tremendous defender who is an assassin in the passing lanes, and Samuel Dalembert is a physical presence inside.

Alas, offensively, this team is a joke. They're turning the ball over on an astounding 20 percent of their possessions, and when you consider who they start, you see why. Reggie Evans is an offensive zero, and Willie Greene is pretty close. Iguodala is basically forced to pound the ball and do everything, which is really, really unfair. Naturally, they sputter when teams trap Iguodala on pick and rolls, because there's no threat of the screener scoring.

The one guy that worries me beyond Iguodala is Louis Williams. He's having a fantastic season thus far, averaging over 20 points/40 with an eFG% of 54. If Philly is smart, they dump Miller and go with Williams, because he gives them their best offensive threat outside of Iguodala. Gilbert's going to need to step up his defensive effort on Williams tonight, and the big guys need to trap him on screen and rolls.

My guess is that tonight's game is going to be an ugly, low-scoring affair. We always have our hands full with Iguodala, and Williams could easily spring for a big game. Other than Kyle Korver, though, there's no real three-point threat, so the old problem of not getting out on shooters won't be as big of a deal tonight. Offensively, I think we need Gilbert at his best, because Philly's either going to have to put the undersized Williams or the slow Miller on him. It would be a good time for Gilbert to pounce.

This is an open game thread, so relive the Calvin Booth memories here.

GO WIZARDS!

The New Manute
Haywood is playing like a freakin' man for once, and its sure to make the Wizards a legitimate team night in and night out.

Picks
I'll take the Wiz and the under. Does the Big 3 pick count if only 2 of them play?

I'm wondering if folks like Dalembert better than Haywood. I would have said Sam without question before this season. Now I'm not so sure.

"Now, obviously individual production does not unilaterally equal better team production, but there's a high level of causation."

Who's on Defense?
I think Haywood is up to the task of Dalembert.

Reggie Evans, thankfully, won't give Jamison too much trouble on O. AJ just needs to keep him off the offensive boards...or from maiming anyone else on the team with a nut-grab.

'Tuff Juice....he can check Igoudala.

Now the guards....

Willie Green is a streaky player.....capable of potential, but he hasn't exactly been filling it up this year.

And Andre Miller will be a concern.

So who guards who? Can we trust Gilbert to stop dribble penetration from Miller? Do we want him chasing Willie Green around?

Stay hungry Wizards.

Wizards and the Over
I have a sickness, and the only cure, is more more Andray Blatche.

The bench is getting good minutes and providing value.  Get Nick Young the ball early and see if he can continue to cultivate his confidence...

Not a fan of Songalia.

Wizards and Under
Lets see if we can't expand the rotation a little tonight - Nick earned some minutes in this game, and I'm kinda feeling a D-Mac sighting tonight.

Gilbert out again
Damn
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Blatche
I hope this is the game that makes Eddie an official believer in terms of Blatche, meaning consistent minutes every night no matter what.

Great ball movement in the second quarter. Keep it Up!

What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

Wow
60 points against a good defense without Arenas?  That's impressive.

Glad to see DeShawn finally showed up this season.

Listening online
Wish I could be watching this game.  Sounds like Stevenson and Blatche absolutely dominated in the second quarter.

Any chance of a Taser sighting tonight?

Thin win
I keep waiting for them to empty the bench.  I just realized...  they did.  How many did they dress, 10?

4 Very Impressive Playaz
Blatche -- He is doing it all.  His passing is even better than I imagined!

N. Young -- Is this kid a rookie?  Plays like a vet, swaggers like one...

Taser -- Not seeing much of him but what I do see I liiiiike!

----I will give Sixers props for showing me L Williams--Mo Cheeks has a gem---

L. Williams -- Plays like an under control energizer bunny rabbit.  I don't know if I like Lou or Monta Ellis better.

Another reason to rejoice: Our division rivals continue to show their incompetence.

say what?
that's a smart trade for orlando. they shore up their 2 and 4 spots. evans is solid. cook is a perfect fit. a 4 that can rebound on defense and step out on offense and hit the three and create space for howard. i think this trade helps orlando. they weren't playing ariza at all. it's also a smart trade for l.a., as ariza can ball. he just didn't fit orlando's system.

BIG STIFF AWARD
Do I even have to tell you?

No, it's not Louis Amundson (although he wins the Leonardo DiCaprio wannabe award.

Yes, it is Mr. Songaila can drill the 2 but does little else.  He makes Gheorghe look fast.

In Before The Game Ended
Awesomeness.  Sheer awesomeness.  The only downside to this game is that all the Gilbert haters are going to come out of the woodwork and say the Wizards don't need him.  I'll still take that over most downsides though.

Oh yeah
Who picked Louis Williams for MIP? (Because picking Andray would've been too easy)

ANDRAY!!!!!
damn that fool was ballin tonight. he is soo much more confident with the ball in his hands this year.  there will no longer be any reason for Ernie to keep him limited in minutes.

i know the level of competition is very low the last few games but remember these are the teams last year we would play to their level. now we are playin our game. the offense seems to be working very well.

Oh, and another thing...
The Wizards are hereby off to a better start than last year.

Ahhhhhhh...

[I'd like to suggest that we quarantine mass panic about Arenas's injury until after Thanksgiving.  Everything seems great right now.]

by sierradave on Nov 20, 2007 11:04 PM EST   0 recs

Couldn't have said it better myself...
and as long as we keep winning (and ESPECIALLY if Blatche continues to dominate) I'll be happy.  Honestly, i'd have to pinpoint us bouncing back after our disastrous start to the continuity that the team has from last season.  Say what you want about Ernie, but that chemisty really allowed the team to really pull together and rebound well.  Were looking great (even without Arenas).  Tonight was the first game I could watch parts of since i'm home from school and the ball movement was great, shooting was great and the defense was very good when it mattered.  Even Deshawn looked like he could shoot tonight.  Blatche is definately going to be a force and hopefully he will continue to cut into Songaila's minutes at the four.

Right now, I am assuming Gil wil sit tomorrow night vs. Charlotte as well and who can blame him.  I would much rather shut him down for a few weeks now to get his knee in order and have him completely ready for the 2nd half of the season and playoff push.
