This should be a fanshot, but the explanation is too long

Let's look at this play rationally for a second.

Flagrant foul? Most definitely. Stevenson hit him across the face. Inadvertent or not, you can't do that.

But a punch? LeBron has got to be kidding himself. DeShawn hit him so hard that LeBron didn't even fall down. Look at the end of the last replay. It's a bit fuzzy, but DeShawn's hand is open-fisted.

And as for DeShawn jawing after the play ... well, LeBron clearly marched over to him as he was on the ground. What else is DeShawn supposed to do, run and hide?

Then, there's Mike Brown. He's clearly instigating things when he runs across the court in order to scream at the officials. Notice the beginning of the replay. He doesn't try to break up the scrum. The only thing he does is run to the officials.

The Wizards have been outplayed in this series, but this play undermines Cleveland's squeaky-clean reputation. It says something about the effectiveness of their public campaign when they can make this play out to be anything more than a hard flagrant foul.

We're fifth!

Toronto's loss to Detroit made it official.  For the third straight year, we're going to be playing Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs.

This creates an interesting scenario.  Should we shut down Butler and anyone else mildly hurt for the next two games so they're totally healthy for the playoffs, or should we keep playing everyone and try to take over the fourth seed?

Discuss.

Additional stuff: According to this, those ads with the split faces will continue in the playoffs with players from the playoff pairings splitting the screen, so you might have to get ready to see a lot LeBrendan Jaywood in the coming weeks.

(Your recap is on the way, until then refrain from rioting.)

Eurotrip 2008!

It's official: The Wizards are going to do preseason in Europe next year.

IC and MJ both confirmed it today.  I find it interesting that Mike decided to ask Gilbert about the trip.  Either Gilbert was just the first person he could find, or he's very sure that Gilbert will be back next year.

By the way, anyone here from Wizards Insider, welcome.  We hope you stick around.

What's better than beating the third best team in the West twice?

Beating them twice in Europe!

While you're working on translating Hibachi and Tough Juice in German and Spanish, make sure to check out the diaries page, lots of great stuff there recently.

Our long, local nightmare is nearing its end

Somewhere, Charlie Bell is wetting his pants:

The Washington Wizards announced that 3-time All-Star, Gilbert Arenas, has been cleared to return to practice.

While Arenas has been cleared by team doctors, the team has stated that they will continue to monitor his progress and there is no set date for his return. Although there has been no timetable set, Arenas stated that he will begin practicing with the team tomorrow.

"Right now I just need to get back on the floor. I will go through these practices and try to get a rhythm again. They cleared me to go out there and go full speed and I'm just going to try to take it slow."

Wizards Insider has more coverage of the news that's worth a read as always.

Obviously, this news doesn't mean he's going to be back tomorrow or anything, but it's a huuuuge step in the right direction.  Considering that it's been 11 months since a healthy Agent Zero has taken the court, you may have forgotten what he brings to the team.  Here's a little refresher (you've been warned):

Butler and Jamison both headed to New Orleans

It's official ladies and gentlemen, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison are headed to the 2008 All-Star Game.  Both will be making their second appearance in the game, Jamison made it in '05 and Butler was on the team last year.  I don't think anyone is going to disagree that both are very deserving of the honor (especially not here).  You can see all the reserves who made it this year by heading over here.

This almost makes up for keeping Nick Young out of the Dunk Contest and the Rookie/Sophmore Game.  Almost.

The good, AND THE VERY, VERY BAD

The good news from today is that the Wizards were very impressive in their win over Dallas today, and Etan Thomas spoke with the media, which is nice to see.

Too bad all of that is overshadowed by THIS INCREDIBLY POOR DECISION FROM THE NBA. (Slight exaggeration, but not really)

Wow (again).

Discuss.

[editor's note, by Pradamaster] Sorry to delete the comments on the previous thread, but this picture kicks way more ass than the other one, so this'll be the celebration thread. -mp

[Weekend editor's note, by JakeTheSnake] The last picture was good, but this one kicks even more than the first, in my opinion. As exciting as this win was, the recap will have to wait a little while because my thoughts are way too sporadic and excited right now to post anything coherent and I've got class early tomorrow and I don't get out until about 2 p.m. so it will be a little while, but until then keep the celebratory comments coming.

To tide you over until then, here's some quick reaction to tonight's game:
Wizards Insider
Les Bullez
Green Bandwagon, with an excellent point about Dave Hopla's impact on the Wizards.
A slight overreaction here.
A slight overreaction, though somewhat accurate.
Antawn Jamison does a hula.
Give it up for the Lock Smith.
SI.com gives the Nick Young dunk contest movement some love.

Etan Thomas Update

HoopsWorld managed to catch up with Etan Thomas, who is beginning to work his way back into playing shape from open heart surgery.  So far, so good:

Etan Thomas, big man for the Washington Wizards, slides up the lane to the elbow, then makes a diagonal cut to the basket. He catches an entry pass and shoots a baby hook. He repeats the same drill and makes a jump hook. Nothing spectacular - basic stuff around the hoop.

However, it's the next move that interests me the most. He makes the cut, catches the pass, puts the ball on the floor with one dribble, then spins back to the middle. Here comes the moment of truth; if he takes an easy lay-up or shows a finesse move, then the concerns are raised.

What I'm looking for is aggressiveness, extension and power - the kind of move any NBA center needs around the basket - the kind of move Etan Thomas would make before his heart surgery back in October.

So, not knowing exactly what to expect, I watch Etan wheel, elevate and BAM! He hammers a hard, two-handed dunk rattling the rim. On the next series of drills, Thomas continues to finish high and hard at the basket with a series of one- and two-handed dunks.

The first test has been passed.

Make sure to read the whole article, it's got a lot of great info on his rehab.  I'm not sure if words can truly capture how great it is to see that Etan's surgery hasn't slowed him down.  Even if he can't get back in time to play this season, his recovery to this point is nothing short of spectacular.

Be afraid Andres, be verrry afraid.
