Misusing Vesely

A lot of people have been down on Vesely but I still like his potential. He’s 7 ft and moves like gizelle out there. My problem is this: The coaches refuse to put him at his REAL position: 3! He’s not a 4. He’ll never be a 4. Vs. the heat they played him at 5! He wasn’t a 4 in Serbia, He wasn’t a 4 in Euroleauge. Sure he can’t shoot yet and we’re overloaded at 3’s but HE NEEDS TO BE ON THE WING. These pick and rolls just aren’t his game. I feel we’re just stunting his growth. Go back and watch any partisan games such as:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvrLlx1KDLE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXZy0vxQ0qc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6YFoWiU5bI

And you’ll see such a different vesely. His skills are defending smaller players w/his quickness and PLAYING HELP DEFENSE because he has such a unique ability to recover w/his length. Offensively, he’s designed for the wing. He has a quick pump fake and first step. They need to groom him at the 3 and refine his jumper.

Best 2012 Draft lottery options?

When I look at our roster the only positions that are in lock are John Wall/ Mack. It kind of reminds me of Russell Westbrook/Maynor. You have a star guard who can play reckless at times. Then you have the young college vet back up guard who comes in,controls the pace a little better, and gives you some solid production in limited minutes. The rest of our roster is nothing but wholes. This is the first year I've been trying to follow/keep up with all of the college stars, so these are some my favorites i think we should pick up. I can't keep up with some of the more unknowns college players, feel free to throw some names at me that would be good fits for us.

Shooting Guards:

Jeremy Lamb; Good improvement over Nick Young. Maybe a little more athletic, good on defense, keeps composure on the court. Rebounds a little better than Nick. Already has NBA 3-point range.

Small Fowards:

Harrison Barnes; we drafted singleton for his defense and we're getting little from him on offense. Barnes is a great scorer, doesn't turn the ball over that much, solid rebounder, great to pair up for Wall.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist; if we fell to 5 or 6 I'd go with Kidd-Gilchrist. Seems like brings his team together. Great hustle. Willing to get better. solid shooter from mid-range. Safe pick.

Power Fowards:

Anthony Davis; After watching more and more UK games I've gotten pretty much sold on Davis as the #1 pick. People are complaining that he is a twig but he will get strong as time goes on. He just knows where he should on defense. Whether it be when to switch on pick & rolls. He knows when to go for a block and can do it with out fouling( JAVALE). Almost all of his points come from lobs, put back, and getting to the free throw line. He's athletic enough to go and get all the lobs he'll be catching from John but has little to no post game right now.

Thomas Robinson; Sad story. He was raised in DC . Granddad, Grandmother, and Mother all died within months of each other.Has a little sister here that he doesn't see that much. He's a good in the post which is what we are lacking, but depending on how Booker develops the rest of this year this pick wouldn't make much sense. Books almost the same height and improving in the post and on his mid jumper. But Robinson has a lot of potential.

Center:

Andre Drummond; Freak athlete but still learning.Wasn't impressed in the few UConn games i watched. Seems like a guy that needs to stay another year and come out with 2 years experience. He has said he was sure he was going stay another year but he could easily change his mind by the end of the season. I honestly could pass on him because he's more of a project.

Attention Mr. Stern - The Big Markets will kill the NBA

Per ESPN.COM:

Brandon Jennings, the Milwaukee Bucks' leading scorer, told ESPN.com Thursday he will strongly consider leaving Milwaukee for one of the league's larger markets once his rookie contract ends.

The Big Markets will kill the NBA.

A 30 team league that repeatedly has the same 6 or 7 teams competing for the championship is not going to be able to attract owners & fans that will invest their money to see their teams constantly losing their top players to these big markets.

Kaman worth going after?

Hornets already said he was off the trading block as of now. They've said they want to develop some younger players. Why not trade McGee and for Kaman straight up. Kaman said he didn't want to go anywhere as a back up. I have a feeling someone may offer McGee an offer not worth matching this off season. So why not just trade him for a veteran who maybe not have the athletic gifts as McGee but could still be more productive? I've tried defending McGee but everytime i do, he ends up doing something idiotic and makes me look like a fool.

The Wiz have 4 players worth keeping.

If, as stated, 2011-2012 was a season to determine which young pieces were worth keeping before making bigger changes, I think Ted and Ernie have an official answer. In my opinion the Wizards, as constructed, have 4 players officially worth keeping. Going forward, I would like to see the Wiz keep:

  • Wall (obviously)
  • Mack - Looks like a solid backup PG, possible future trade bait.
  • Booker - Not sold he is a starter, but is developing (unlike every other Wiz project since 2000)...should be at least a rotation guy
  • Singleton - Has the tools/skills to be a rotation "3 and D" guy. His shot looks better than %s say, so I will trust that unlike every other Wizards player who needs to develop a J, his will come along.
Of the rest of the young players, I think only Crawford is worth considering keeping. I won't even mention the vets.
  • McGee - will never commit to doing the smaller things necessary to be a franchise center, at least not while in DC. If he ends up in the right situation I could see him becoming a beast, but its not going to be here. $10-12m a year is a toxic, franchise killing contract IMO.
  • Andray - As much shit as he gets, I think Baltche (couldn't help myself) could be a solid 3rd big man on a pretty good team. His extension is exhibit #2 (behind Jan Vesely) of why Grunfeld has to go, but he does have skills. If you forced him to work with a trainer during the entire off-season to prevent his conditioning issues he could be an asset. But I still think I would rather see him amnestied after they buy out Lewis.
  • Nick Young - Might be my least favorite player in the NBA, he just Does Not Get It(tm). His court vision is amazingly bad, and he does not adapt to defensive changes. I think other teams get EXCITED when Nick is hot early, because it means he will become a black hole of shooting through contested double-teams for the duration of the game after the D adjusts. On the occasion his strategy does somewhat work (See: Toronto game this week) he pats himself on the back and says stuff like "The Kobe Effect" as if he thinks of himself as one of the top scorers in the league. Add in things like Twitter campaigns for the 3-pt All Star competition and you have a player who simply exhibits an amazing quantity of attributes that would never be tolerated on a halfway decent team. I bet he gets less than the MLE in the off-season. I still don't want him at that price.
  • Jan Vesely - I am not going to call him a bust, I even like a lot of what he does. But he is the epitome of why Grunfeld needs to be fired. How could you possibly look at that draft, with our roster of zero shooters, and say "Man, we really need a no-skills tweener 7-footer who weighs 200lbs and shot sub 40% from the FT line last year WHILE BEING THE 2nd OR 3rd BEST PLAYER ON HIS TEAM IN EUROPE. He will TOTALLY be ready to contribute at an NBA level before our 2nd year #1 overall PG leaves. I bet his transition alley-oops from Wall will be amazing!!" Not saying he is going to be terrible in the long run, but on a team this raw, you have to spend some of your picks on players able to fit the puzzle and contribute soon in a very specific way...like a Leonard or Thompson.
  • Seraphim - Another super-raw player, an Ernie Grunfeld Special. I see his ceiling as a 4th or 5th big man, so I guess I could see keeping him around, but I don't think you can factor him into any plans of contention.
  • Jordan Chuckford - Not Worth keeping
  • Jordan Crawford - If you can coach the "I think I am MJ" out of him, and pull him every single time he morphs into his alter ego Jordan Chuckford (you know...the one who is a NY level black hole and dribbles around either wildly or in place for no reason) until Chuckford dies, he becomes an asset off the bench as a 2nd team scorer. If only he would use his passing skills and court vision more.
I think the Wiz need to be actively shopping every single player in my second list. Obviously I don't think our young players have much value, but I think Young and McGee in particular could net some late-1st (or similar) assets that could be pooled to net a 2nd Lottery pick this year (my end goal). I guess there isn't really an overall reason for this fanpost other than to put my opinion up here...but there it is. I will probably play with the trade machine to try and put together some reasonable trades. What do you guys think?

This Is Where I Stand

is this really a successful rebuild so far?

is this where we wanted to be 2 years ago when we traded caron, twan, and gil?

is this exactly what eg had planned?

we got lucky when we got the first pick in the 2010 draft and i still believe we struck gold with that pick. john came in and took us all into the rebuild (the second gil was traded). he started the year off slow on offense and defense, he was still missing those same lay ups, he had no jumper, and still couldn't control his speed. Naturally everyone panicked because of such high hopes for him, some even started calling him a bust. RELAX he will be fine.

The way i see this rebuild is that we may have 2, maybe 3, players that we can actually start next year. Wall, mcgee (if hes here) and maybe booker, who i think deserves it but others may not think so.

so 2 maybe 3 starters, 3 years into the rebuild... thats not good, it is extremely important that we find a player who can come in and start right off the back. Im sick of all these athletic, players who may or may not be ok.

now for the point of why i created this post. In my Opinion i really like randy wittman, and i hope he returns to coach next year, we have a star in john wall, i think we WILL find our secondary star this draft whether its davis, barnes, lamb or whoever and we sign mcgee but nick will walk.

we have to, HAVE TO, get a free agent to put on the court next year or we will be bad for atleast another 2 years. And if it is up to me i would like to have Ray Allen (starter), Ian Mahinmi (off the bench), and landry Field (bench or maybe starter)

I would like to go into next year with a starting line up of:

Wall

Ray Allen

Landry Field

Anthony Davis

Javalle McGee

off the bench:

Booker T

Seraphin

Crawford (i think we should keep him a little longer)

Mack Attack

Ian M

Jan

singleton

I think that this is a line up built for a nice rebuild and we can seriously start to win games and add players along the year. this is again just my opinion but i think it could work

Is Kyrie Irving already 'All Star' good?

With Rose and Wade being voted in as starters by the fans, there are 6 reserves to be chosen by the coaches: 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center and 2 wildcards. Unfortunately, there is no Wizard deserving of a selection this year but as I was thinking about who would be deserving reserves, I came to the conclussion that Kyrie Irving is a very serious candidate for the guard slots and it shocked me a litlle.

As a rookie Irving is averaging 21.8ppg, 6.1apg en 4.2rpg per 36minutes. What’s even more impressive is that he shoots 49% from the field, 83% from the line at 57.7% TS. He has a PER of 21.6 which is 4rd for eastern conference guards behind Rose, Wade and Lou Williams according to hoop data (15 is league average, anything above 20 is borderline all star) His assist rate is pretty good at 34.9% and his win-share is flat-out ridiculous for a rookie: 2.2. (rookies normally have a negative win share). He does turn the ball over 3 times a game but his team is 10th in the east, only 1 game out and he is playing on a team that everybody before the season started thought was pis poor, since they just started their rebuild

Keep the Three Burritoes

Every day we have a new post about trade scenarios for Andray Blatche, Nick Young and JaVale McGee. They all sound reasonable, but it got me thinking. Before they were shipped out, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler and Brenden Haywood were the starters.

The blow up thrust these three into the starting lineup, and gave us a chance to see what they can do. And what did we learn? None of them are starters. I would argue that JaVale and Nick are greatly diminishing their value on the open market with each passing game. So here's a thought: Why not keep them as backups?

Rebuilding the Washington Wizards

I've been reading the boards here and going to some of the games (including the toronto game on 2-6-12) and I have thought about how the Wiz could move this team forward. Some say the process has been to slow so here's a more aggressive path

Should Wiz try a 2 PG lineup

One of the newest trends in the NBA has been to play two point guards at the same time. The idea has been to increase the team's pace, passing and fast break opportunities, without hurting the team defensively. Teams that have executed this two PG lineup successfully (LAC, DEN, MIN, others) while arguably sacrificing some defensive size against the other teams shooting guard.

With the Washington Wizards being one of the worst passing teams in basketball and a team that is openly trying to play faster, shouldn't Wittman give the Wall-Mack backcourt combo a little run? I think Wall is big enough and athletic enough to guard most twos (at the very least in short stretches). Mack and Wall are possibly the two best passers on the team, and Mack's shooting is not too much of a fall-off from Young/Crawford.

I'm not saying this should be a starting lineup, but a couple 3-5 stretches each game would be a nice experiment to see. Currently, I believe Wall-Mack combo has gotten less than 10 minutes of run, if any. (I presume because it's not on this list, http://www.82games.com/1112/1112WAS2.HTM ).

I'd like to see Wittman at least experiment with this. I think it could help take some pressure off of Wall and eliminate some of the turnovers. And hopefully, get more offensive player and ball movement.
