Open thread: Regular season game 54

I'm kind of in the middle of something, but I'll return with a full game preview before 7:30 (promise!).  For now, use this space to discuss the game tonight, since discussion has already begun in other locations.

As mentioned earlier, none of Cleveland's new players are going to go tonight.  They'll have only 8 players available, and two are recent call-ups from the D League.

Lines are Cavs by 3 and 189 on the total points.

Update [2008-2-22 17:12:52 by Pradamaster]: Here's a brief preview. I'd throw up all the numbers, but since the Cavs made such a big trade yesterday, they probably won't be relevant.

First, some key links for today's game:

Friday Update [Wizards Insider].
Skeleton Crew [Cleveland Plain Dealer].
Ball Movements [Hardwood Paroxysm].
No Forgetting That Romp [Washington Times].
NBA 3 Way Deal Good for Most [Knickerblogger].
Disappearing Defense [Washington Post].
Coach Jordan: Why do you hate the Wizards' rookies? [Les Bullez].

The key piece of news is that not only will Caron miss the game, but AD might as well, at least according to the first Wizards Insider link. Ivan says AD is a "game-time decision."

The worse news on Butler is he might miss even more time, because Eddie insists on having Butler go through a full practice before he plays. We have a game against Charlotte tomorrow before hitting the road to play a back-to-back against New Orleans and Houston Monday and Tuesday. That leaves Sunday as a travel day, and Eddie doesn't have his team practice on back-to-backs. If Eddie were to stick to his policy, then Butler will miss at least the next three games. That's not good. I sincerely hope Eddie lets him try playing against Charlotte and limit his minutes depending on how he feels. Of those three teams, the Bobcats are the least powerful, so it might be a good chance to let Caron get his rhythm back.

Otherwise, the Times and Post stories focus on what has changed since the last time these two teams played, when Cleveland crushed us by 36. That result was very concerning then, and in retrospect, it's still really concerning. That was a key test for our healthy team, and we failed it tremendously. Now that Cleveland has basically no players left, tonight's a good time to return the favor.

Speaking of, the Cavs will play LeBron James, Damon Jones, Eric Snow, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Dwayne Jones, Devin Brown, and the two D-Leagers tonight. This means we should expect a lot of LeBron and nobody else, which is why it sucks doubly to not have Caron in the lineup tonight. It's not really Caron's defense, which is pretty good against LeBron, if not good against everyone else. It's his offense, and his ability to make LeBron work on that end of the court. My guess is LeBron's going the distance tonight, so it'll be important for Andray Blatche to be active on the glass, because it'll eventually tire LeBron out.

On that note, I want to see whoever's playing the point guard to emphasize pushing the ball on rebounds. Cleveland is an athletic team, but all of their athletes are injured, and even when they were healthy, they were only playing at the 17th-fastest pace in the league. Their transition defense has been subpar this year after being so good last season, so I think we can capitalize with some easy looks.

I'm also looking for a big game from Jamison. Drew Gooden usually plays him well, particularly on the offensive end, where he's had some of his best games against us. Without Gooden, the Cavs will have to put Dwayne Jones on Antawn, so Antawn should be assertive and score on him.

Anyway, this is an open game thread, so think about what this guy should do with his site here.

Wiz, over.

This game means a lot more to the Wizards than the Cavs.

Wiz, Under

I wonder what happens to this Cavs blog?

What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

Wiz, over
Seriously - we have to beat a team of just 6 nba regulars even w/o Arenas/Butler.

without gilbert...
are we the worst team EVER at trying to win a game down the stretch? i mean we have to be reaching historic levels of how bad we are in last-shot situations... disgusting. if i wasnt sick, i'd still be hurling.

So angry
-What does LeBron need to do to be called for an offensive foul?

-What does DeShawn need to do to be more decisive?

-What do we need to do to find Damon freaking Jones?

Need to calm down, like now.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Well...
Am I alone in feeling like not one player wanted that game?  I can't think of another explanation.

Psycho D
Y'know, it's pretty bad when your best offensive play is to feed it in the low post to DARIUS SONGAILA.

Ugh.
Ok this is definitely the low point. I mean, losing to a team with 6 players is just ... well, we currently suck BAD. I think I am going to have a take a break from watching for a week or so.

P.S. Where are all the "trade Arenas" trolls now? Even if we aren't better with him we sure as hell aren't better without.

I just saw the score -
I wasn't home to watch the game. Can anyone tell me did they at least play hard the whole game and also how the heck did Damon Jones score 27 points on us?

by ooba on Feb 22, 2008 11:14 PM EST reply actions

kinda sorta not really
they played hard but not smart. there was no deviation to the standard wiz gameplan until the 4th quarter started, when they finally started feeding the post... with darius songaila. wtf. down the stretch, same ol' jumpshots, same ol' matador defense, same ol' refs not making the right calls.

It's a tricky question
I think they play hard, but they get discouraged very easily, and that affects their mental capacity, particularly with rotations.  The youngsters are the obvious culprit, but Jamison isn't helping any with his complaining act after every single call.  There were about five fast breaks that Cleveland got because Jamison was too busy complaining to the refs.

missed the game
glad i didn't get to see damon jones go for 27 against us in a cavs win. i imagine the wiz gave him open looks all night. must have been infuriating to watch.

What did you expect w/o CB?
I can't be mad at the fellas.  A narrow defeat on the road to a team w/ LeBron and Big Z isn't anything to be ashamed of.  So what if Cleveland had 8 guys?  We had 10, but three are rookies.

Maybe this post at caronbutler3.com will cheer you up.  http://caronbutler3.com/?p=36

I've Had It
Disclaimer: I'm really upset right now, and so I'll probably regret writing at least some of these things later, but I have to get this off my chest.

I can't stomach to watch another game of this pathetic excuse for a basketball team.  The Wizards on the court last night played with no heart, no desire, and no competitive drive.  Every single one of them might as well have had a big "L" stamped on their foreheads.  They were looking for ways to lose instead of finding ways to win.

Time and time again the Wizards give away close games.  It's almost like they don't like winning.  Losing feels more comfortable to these guys.  If I was building a championship team, I wouldn't want a single one of those players on my team.  They just don't know how to win and they don't really care enough about losing.  It's not about experience, they've had plenty of "experience building" games these past three weeks.  Every time they have a chance to pull out a close game, they find a way to lose.  It makes me sick.

It's probably a good thing I'm not the Wizards GM, because after watching last night's debacle I would feel compelled to dump this whole lot of losers and start from scratch with just Gilbert and Caron.  I wouldn't even want Jamison after watching him hoist up those poorly-advised 3-pointers in the last 5 minutes of the game instead of taking advantage of the foul situation (the Wizards drew 4 personal fouls in the first 2 minutes of the 4th quarter) by driving to the hole.  All-Stars are supposed to step up for their teams when they are needed most.  Jamison?  He simply fades away (at least he did last night).

I hope the Wizards make a comeback this season and make me eat my words.  But at this very low point,  I'm not going to get those hopes up too high.
