I've seen this idea bandied about in various comments sections, and with news of the Clippers trying to do a sign and trade with the Nets for Pierce, it seems like that is the route that Doc is looking to use to add to his roster. They don't really have the space to add another impact player via free agency, so sign and trade is their best route. Ariza is an upgrade over both Matt Barnes and Jared Dudley, who were their starting SFs last year. Ariza supposedly wants to go back west. It seems like Doc is a coach most players want to play for. Looks like the Wizards should at least be investigating the possibility.
Ariza seems to be lots of team's backup plan after LeBron, Carmelo, even Deng, Hayward, and maybe Pierce. Lance Stevenson is also on the market. Once all those dominos fall, if the Clips still haven't upgraded at SF and Ariza is still out there, doesn't that make sense for both LAC and Ariza? Supposedly the Nets trade is falling through because the Nets don't want any of the assets the Clippers are offering (Barnes, Dudley, Reggie Bullock). Apparently the Nets want Jamal Crawford, which I doubt the Clippers do.
Wouldn't you rather have Barnes @ 3.5M for the next 2 years OR Dudley @ 4.25M for the next 2 years, PLUS Reggie Bullock on his rookie deal for the next 3 years, than Ariza @9M+ over the next 4? I love Ariza, but w/ this type of trade, you have a startable player (albeit a downgrade from Ariza) to hold the reigns until Otto is ready (hopefully middle of this year) at a lower salary for 2 years. Yes, it ties up cap space in the 15-16 offseason, but so would re-signing Ariza for more money.
If the Clips are offering Barnes/Dudley + Bullock for Pierce, wouldn't they offer AT LEAST that much for the younger Ariza?
