Marcin Gortat is the latest player the Wizards have outbid themselves. Can anyone name what other team was willing to pay Gortat that much money? Dallas was going to be the biggest foe but already traded for their center. What other terms were out there for Gortat?
Martell Webster Agent last year at the dawn of free agency was begging teams to get interested for his client. 2 Broken Backs can scare off alot of teams. Grunfield gave Webster the Max Mid Level Contract on the first day of free agency. There was no news that anyone else was going to give him that kind of money. At the end of free agency there were so many bargains that the Wizards could have had Webster for alot cheaper such as Dorell Wright at $6million for 2 years. Darren Collison at $1.6million for a year and an option.
Speaking on missing on Darren Collison, Eric Maynor not only got $2million from the Wizards on the first day of free agency, but the Wizards gave him a player option for a second year meaning that if he sucked he would exercise that option. The Wizards had to give up a 2015 2nd round pick to help get rid of him. Did the Wizards have to sign him on the first day of free agency? Who were they bidding against for his services on that first day?
Andray Blatch with the $35million extension with a whole 2 years left on his contract has absolutely blown in the Wizards face. The Wizards are still paying him for this coming year. Signing Gilbert Arenas to that $108million contract after a major leg injury also comes to mind. Who else was going to pay him that much money especially after a major operation.
To me, Ernie Grunfield panics when it comes to players he wants. He does not let the market dictate what he should pay a player. He actually goes out and sets the market for the player he wants. Unfortunately, this paranoia costs millions and millions of dollars the Wizards do not need to pay.
