Go read this article ... something this positive hasn't been written about DC pro basketball since the days of Unseld, Dandridge, and Hayes.
Lost in the love for the Pierce signing, getting great value for Trevor Ariza instead of nothing, and the general good cheer surrounding the teams offseason moves is this great little nugget about undrafted rookie Khem Birch's progress in the summer league:
And have you seen Khem Birch? The Wizards sold their second-round pick this year, and I have only a vague idea of who Birch is (big man from UNLV), but listen. Birch could be that second-round pick!
If he’s good enough for Sam Cassell, he’s good enough for me.
Let the Khem Birch era begin
If the Wizards can build from within (like the Spurs do, replacing parts from their own bench) with young turks like Porter, Rice, and now Birch ... it could be the difference in making the playoffs and getting to the East finals or even the NBA finals in a wiiiiiiide-open Eastern Conference. That is how much importance I put on the young bench players to become either starters or real contributors. If Birch, of all people, can provide true relief for Gortat as his backup, it will be awesome.
Turns out this summer league is going to be incredibly important.
