While getting ready for free agency I came across some news about Derrick Rose and his Team USA plans this summer. If you remember Rose, Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook were point guards chosen ahead of Wall for tryouts. In 2010 Team USA went with four primary ball handling guards to Turkey where they won gold. Rose, Curry, Westbrook and Chauncey Billups. The latter two also had the ability to defend both guard spots due to their size. Coach K loves to press in international play where Team USA can use their tremendous athleticism advantage to create havoc defensively and strike in the open court. With that in mind if Rose and/or Williams can't attend camp I would think Wall, Ty Lawson, and Eric Bledsoe would be the next in line. With Wall's ability to guard both positions and his ability to facilitate, especially on the break I would feel pretty good about his chances at an invite.
Assuming he is invited him making the team is another story. I'm pretty sure Curry, Irving and Westbrook are locks. The smart money would be on Lillard to snag the fourth guard spot, due to his scoring ability but if Wall impresses enough in the camp its not unreasonable to think he'll get the nod. Assuming Wall gets better at shooting with his feet set (and he did improve in that area a bunch this season) his physical gifts, especially his ability to pressure primary ball handlers could provide an option that the coaches need more than another scoring guard.
Who knows? Either way its pretty cool that we have some players who are even regarded so highly by USA basketball, including our own Bradley Beal (who already has his invite for this summer).
