The rumors surrounding Golden State and their pursuit of Kevin Love got me thinking. The latest word is that GS would send David Lee , Klay Thompson and a future 1st round pick to Minnesota for Kevin Love and Kevin Martin.
I think that Washington could potentially offer a more attractive package:
Bradley Beal + Nene + future 1st round pick for Love and Martin
Beal has a much higher upside than Thompson, is a better defender, and would fit in perfectly next to Ricky Rubio. Nene's contract is slightly less than Lee's - plus he's a much better defender. Neither is very durable with both missing time in recent years due to injuries.
Love would immediately put the Wizards into Championship conversations. Martin is one of the most efficient scoring guards in the League; and despite his defensive deficiencies, is still one of the best Shooting Guards in the League. Re-sign Gortat, Ariza, Temple, Booker and Gooden ; and use the MLE to add a young big man .
The Wizards starting line up would be incredibly versatile with Wall, Martin, Ariza, Love and Gortat. With Love on the floor, John Wall would have tremendous driving lanes. The Wall/Gortat pick-and-rolls would have more room to operate. Ariza would get even more open looks from the corner. Plus there's the added benefit of three elite 3-point shooters on the floor at the same time (Ariza, Love, Martin). Martin is killer at coming off screens, which would add another wrinkle to Wittman's offense.
Beal is a lot to give up - but I believe that trade would give the Wizards a REAL championship chance.
