Kevin Durant becomes a free agent in the summer of 2016, as you all know. Wizards fans have been clamoring for Kevin to come to DC for some time now. However, that dream scenario looked pretty unlikely with Westbrook, Durant and Ibaka's bond seemingly getting stronger by the year. I was beginning to feel pretty skeptical of either the Wizards pursuing KD or KD wanting to come to DC in 2016. Still, I can't help but think of a Wall, Beal, Durant core dominating the NBA for 3-4 years. With that core the Wizards would have a chance to shatter all kinds of offensive records and as long as Durant is willing, they could be a pretty good defensive team as well.
Recent comments by Ted Leonsis and my analysis of the current state of the Thunder have led me to believe that the Wizards may indeed be preparing to pursue Kevin Durant and that Kevin may be more open to returning home by the summer of 2016. I will not focus on why I see Kevin being possibly open to returning home in 2016 because I already know that most of you disagree and right now it is pointless to try to convince any of you that the Thunder are not poised to win it all next year. They quite possibly could although I have my doubts. (See Mahoney's take)
As for the Wizards, it seems that they are well positioned for a run at 2016 free agency. Whether they target Kevin Durant or not we cannot know yet. However, with the current salary situation all they have to do is not do anything that would make it difficult to have room for Durant or others in 2016.
This quote by Ted leads me to believe that they are acutely aware of this and are planning to tailor their approach to ensure flexibility in 2016:
"We also want to look at this not as a 1 or 2 year horizon, we obviously have to look at other off-seasons, future off-seasons because there’s other free agents that become free agents at that time. " - Ted Leonsis (Minute 9:30)
Now of course this is a very vanilla statement that doesn't identify any one particular season, player, or group of players but Kevin Durant will be the most coveted free agent of his class and given his ties to the area .... one begins to wonder if Ted isn't thinking of a lanky fellow by the name of KEVIN DURANT!!!!
So my thoughts are that they will try to make immediate moves that don't restrict them from making a max offer in the summer of 2016 whether to Durant or someone else.
What do you all think? Can we have nice things?
