Lets say for arguments sake that whether the Wizards drafted Otto Porter or Nerls Noel that they would have eventually traded for Marcin Gortat anyways. It seems reasonable because the Wizards were going for broke this year and Nerls would not have played this year anyways. The sad part is that the draft pick given up may have been far less than the #1 we gave up to the Suns because we would have traded for Gortat in June and not at the beginning of the season when we were desperate.
Now comes the hard part. The part that missing on the 3rd Pick of the Draft will haunt the Wizards. If the Wizards would have taken Nerls Noel last June this could or would be the affect:
1. The Wizards would have made the playoffs and onto the second round anyways with or without Porter or Noel because Porter was a non-factor.
2. The Wizards would be set at Center with Noel next year and could use Gortat as a Sign and Trade leverage transaction (Possible to Detroit for Monroe maybe or an outside shot at KLove or a nice piece to add).
3. Webster could be traded in order to free up money to re-sign Ariza. We would go into next year with our Starting Small Forward intact while shedding Websters $5 million, plus Porters $4.7 million would go to Nerls Noel and the Center position instead. Even if Webster was untradeable re-signing Ariza would make sense.
Now we are stuck hoping that Webster and Porter can equal the production from Ariza. It would be crazy to think that if we sign Ariza that the Small Forward position would allocate over $20+ million to that position.
Who would have thought that missing on the 3rd pick of last years draft could/would influence drastically what we do for next year?
