If the season ended today, the following 16 teams would make the playoffs (alphabetical order): Atlanta, Brooklyn, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Golden State, Houston, Indiana, LAC, Memphis, Miami, OKC, Portland, San Antonio, Toronto and Washington.
The Wiz Win% against the other 15 playoff teams so far is (W:13, L:22) is 37.1%. The Win% against non-playoff teams is (W:23, L: 11) or 67.7%
Makes sense right? We should fare better against non-playoff teams, especially now, with many teams strategically positioning for 2014 draft, aka TankaPa"Lose"a
However, it might help to interpret these results and use a benchmark. The prior 3 seasons, the Raptor's have been in our situation (non-playoff). They have enduring as a bottom rung group and turned things around this season just like us.
Raptor's benchmark. Win% against 15 other playoff teams, (W:15, L:24) is 38.5%. Win% against non-playoff teams is (W:23, L:6) is 79.3%
Using the Raptors as a comparison, we see similar win% against playoff teams (37.1% vs. 38.5%), which shows why the Raptors are a good benchmark. The difference is win% against non-playoff teams (67.7% vs. 79.3%). This is a big difference! Another way to look at it is that the Wizards lose 1 out of every 3 contests against non-playoff teams while the Raptors lose only 1 out of every 5 contests against non-playoff teams.
I would pose that the Raptors are a good benchmark because they also have 1 All Star, like us (Wall, deRozen) and they also have 1 up and coming All Star, like us (Lowry, Beal). So that was the Quantitative part now for the Qualitative... what are the underlying reasons for the Wiz's relative underperformance vs. non-playoff teams?
The Qualitative requires your help, thoughts?
