While not directly relevant to the Wizards, I'd like to take a couple of minutes to give my opinion on Cheeks and what the potential side effects are later on down the road.
I think that this firing shows that the Detroit owner, Tom Gores, has become frustrated with the team's performance and decided that this season may be lost. While I didn't particularly enjoy Cheeks lineup rotation, defensive scheme, or offensive playcalling (basically everything), he is a new coach and is still learning the ropes. The roster that he was given was particularly challenging due to the frontcourt, which is nothing new.
However, I think this highlights the main problem of the franchise, their GM, Joe Dumars. Everybody knows that he has become one of the worst GM's when it comes to building a roster and is only surviving due to his early postseason success. His tenure is probably going to be over after this season and like most GM's who are about to leave I expect him to make at least one big splash to try and save his job.
This is where it relates to us. As a RFA I doubt Detroit will be able to afford all three pieces of their backcourt- despite its ineffectiveness. Although I doubt Ernie would is actually interested in trading Gortat or Ariza, if Dumars calls Ernie needs to listen. Any trade involving Monroe will be tricky because we have a lot of overlapping needs. As a GM on the hot seat, Dumars is probably looking for some sort of win-now impact player. But there aren't that many out there who don't play the 4-5 positions. I think that the pelicans, cavs. and bulls could be potential trade targets. I didn't intend for this to be a trade post but I think that Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Dion Waiters, and Mike Dunleavy are all potential fits for the pistons.
Anyways, I could've went off on a tangent, but I would love to have Monroe on the Wizards, especially if he we could move Gortat and put Monroe in at the 5. We are severely lacking in flashy, movable pieces so Ernie would almost certainly have to make some Grunfeldian magic happen.
