I thought about this trade yesterday and I was wondering what the community thought about it. Everything works out fine from a financial standpoint and if both parties get players that remain healthy, it works out pretty well for both teams imho.
So here is the trade. The Wizards give up Gortat, Ariza, and Porter to the Knicks. In return they get Chandler and Felton. If Tyson can remain healthy, it gives us a rim protecting center that knows what it takes to win a championship and play alongside great pg's. Felton gives us the solid backup pg we have needed for years here in Washington. Yes, we lose Ariza who has been playing lights out, but we really can't afford him next year and his career numbers point more to this being the exception rather than the norm. Gortat is a solid big, but Tyson is another level completely in my opinion; and Otto, well I will just leave that alone for now.
So why do the Knicks make this trade? Well for starters, Melo is giving strong indications that he is chasing a championship and could very well leave after this season. If this happens, the Knicks want to open up room in their cap. In comes Gortat and Ariza. Both of these players are on 1 year deals worth a combined 15 million that they can get out from under. They also get the 3rd pick in last years draft on a rookie deal as a gimme just for making it happen. The next couple years of free agency is pretty stacked and with promising upcoming draft classes, the Knicks need to become bad and fast. We can help them do that.
Rather than signing Gortat and Ariza to medium sized contracts that we can't afford next season; let's upgrade for 2 years and save a ton of money. Even if Gortat and Ariza were set to make what they do now again next year, we would still save around 5 million in cap space.
What do you guys think?
