Plan A is Kevin Durant in the summer of 2016, I know that, I understand that, I agree with that and I accept that. With Plan A ultimately in mind how do you get from here to there?
Greg Monroe seemed to make the most sense as Plan B but it looks like that is becoming more and more impossible. Asik gets brought up a lot and would be my next choice but that doesn't look likely with all the Boston rumors. What are the realistic next options. You could always just re-up Ariza and Gortat and call it an off season but that would suck the life out of the momentum this team is forming IMO. If you look at what you really have, Wall and Beal and a good player in Nene but not a moveable asset nor a piece for the future. If that is your basic core (cuz you can't move Nene), then I think you have to be open to moving every piece around the core to best complement them and make the team better but also improve flexibility for 2016. It also means you're thinking about this now because the last window for trades before the summer is here.
Trade: Otto Porter, Kevin Seraphin, Jan Vesely for Thaddeus Young, James Anderson. Its certainly possible a low value draft might have to change hands one way or another but this basic framework makes sense for both teams. Philly gets good value and potential cap space for Thad Young. And Washington just consolidated their rotation.
I know its weird to trade both your draft picks, but Thad Young (25) and James Anderson (24) are at the right age to ascend with Wall and Beal. That leaves your committed money this summer to
Wall, Beal, Webster, Nene, Young, Neal and Maynor for about $51M. The cap will probably set at $60M with the tax around $72M (for comparison we're at $70M this year). Assuming you bring back Gortat and Booker, you could probably use the MLE on a defensive wing like Thabo or Aminu to shore up the rotation (much rather Thabo obviously lol). Bring back Temple and Anderson for the vet min, and call up Sato and you have your roster.
Wall, Beal, Webster, Nene, Gortat, Young, Thabo, Booker, Neal, Temple, Anderson, Sato, and a 2nd rd pick is 13 players to start next season. Maybe playing in the playoffs intrigues a couple of good vets to take the vet min here like Harrington did this year. Sign one of those and you're at 14 guys with long term money coming off the books just in time for KD (Nene and Young combine for $21M).
