With the recent news that the zards are trying to resign Gortat and pursue Greg Monroe over the offseason, it's becoming increasingly apparent that we won't be able to resign Trevor Ariza. As much as I love Trevor's play on defense, I don't think this is the worst thing in the world. We really won't be able to contend until we have a dangerous offense, and Trevor's total lack of playmaking ability really holds us back in this aspect.
With that being said, there are certainly a lot of teams out there that would love to bolster their defense and 3 pt shooting with a long wing like Trevor. Instead of just letting him walk at the end of the season, we could flip him to a team trying to make a playoff push (who might also want to resign him after the season), and improve our team where we need it the most - ball handling and playmaking. So without further ado...
I know JR has been having a historically bad year, but I think a change of scenery and the strong veteran presence in our locker room (that felt weird to write) would help him turn it around. Remember people, this guy is only one year removed from winning 6th man of the year while averaging 20 points per 36 mins. Can you imagine how valuable a playmaker of this caliber could be to our second unit? Through in a capable backup PG in Udrih and many of our bench woes would be a thing of the past.
Losing Trevor would certainly hurt our D, but I think Martell has proven he can handle starting. This would also allow Otto to get some more burn and hopefully develop into our future starting SF. I can't say for sure that the Knicks would take this deal, but god knows that their wing defense is abysmal and they really want to get rid of Smith.
So in summation, lets sell high on Ariza, buy low on JR Smith, and give a jump start to our tepid second unit offense. Only other option is letting him walk after the year for nothing.
