Izzy.Bae wrote out a great post about the real Otto Porter. I noticed that a lot of comparisons started to be made as we guess who Otto will be. Comparisons ranged from Tayshaun Prince to Rip to Paul George to Iggy. So to branch off from that post I ask, who should Otto be? Maybe the other question is, who should Wizard's brass mold Otto to be?
Pippen / Hill/ James: This just is not happening. This is the prototype superstar SF mold I feel, but none of these strengths fit with Otto. This SF tends to lean toward ball handler / point guard skill set, neither of which fits Porter.
Rip: I like this comparison a lot. This would assume Otto starts improving his conditioning. I think this fits his style the best. His sweet spot is between 15-22ft. It would not require him to be a ball handler. He would still be in position to be a play maker where he will catch it. I just don't think he will have that 3 point range based on his mechanics. That being said, will be able to role around a pick and elevate to be effective at this style?
Old KG: Probably a pipe dream. this is assuming that he puts on a lot of muscle and plays PF. The similarities I draw here is that Otto has that transcendent game which, of anyone, KG is probably the most transcendent superstar ever. Difference is, KG is crazy and is a rebounding machine. Offensively, KG is more comfartable with his back to his basket, but both like to play one the same area of the court. Also, like KG, Otto seems to look to make the smart pass from that 15-20ft range before taking his own shot.
Paul George: Otto and George have freakishly similar college stats. The difference is, I think Paul George is slightly faster, a better handler, and more aggresive. They are both similar in that, George is also not super athletic. But George seems capable of creating his own shot, and Porter does not, though they both seem to shoot from the same vicinity.
Iggy: Iggy is 3 and D. He also is super strong and boasts great lateral quickness. Because of his stature I just do not see Porter being similar. Maybe they will both be 3 and D, but Otto could not model his game to look like Iggy or MWP.
Tayshaun Prince: I think this is the give up choice. There is nothing wrong with Prince's game, but he is nothing special either. Solid D, hits the open shot, and hustle. Definitely not a game changer. Just solid.
