NBA free agency 2013: Wizards interested in Nate Robinson, according to report

Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

Could the Wizards bring in Nate Robinson for some scoring punch off the bench?

Think the Washington Wizards could use some extra scoring punch off the bench?

Well, if that's the case, then this report from Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld presumably comes as some delightful news to you. Otherwise, you're probably trying to put together the puzzle of how this makes any sense, but hey, the Wizards have shown interest in signing free agent guard Nate Robinson this summer.

If the Wizards are still looking for an affordable guard who can help add scoring punch to the second unit, Robinson makes some sense. After fitting into a competitive Chicago Bulls team last season under Tom Thibodeau, he could fill a similar role in Washington.

Primarily coming off the bench for the Bulls, Robinson averaged 13.1 points and 4.4 assists per game while shooting a tidy 41 percent from beyond the arc. His ability to score off the dribble and hit open three-pointers is highly appealing, and while he's not a great defender, he managed to earn big playoff minutes from the defensive-minded Thibs last season.

After signing Eric Maynor to be John Wall's back-up on the first day of free agency, the Wizards don't really need a third point guard, but Robinson could be mixed and matched in a number of lineups. Playing next to Wall, he could be another capable shooter, while he could easily handle running the offense when Wall and Bradley Beal are out of the lineup.

Depending on the price, it's something the Wizards are smart to be considering. After the struggles this team had on offense last season, having someone like Robinson who can stir up some quick offense can be hugely valuable, particularly when we don't really know what Maynor will provide.
