Saw the link for trade rumors put up by Marc Stein last night and this caught my eye:
The Wolves continue to try to move higher up in the draft to get their hands on Victor Oladipo. They're offering Derrick Williams, the No. 9 and the No. 26 pick to move up, but so far haven't found a taker. New Wolves GM Flip Saunders is enamored with Oladipo.
I immediately thought "I hope Oladipo is there at #3 and I hope the Wiz take that deal". While people have cooled on Williams they still will admit he's not bad. Just isn't a superstar. But looked like he could be a quality PF if he continues to work on his game. Now add in that you get the #9 pick back and still could pick up a guy like Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Shabazz Muhammad or Steven Adams. Also, add in that #26 could bring in a guy like Glen Rice, Jr...I like that. Could go from a team that struggles to store to a team that while still young now has more shooters to help space out the floor for Wall to attack the basket.
Back to Williams. His numbers went up this year and when he started they very solid. In one 8 game stretch he went for 19.6 and 9.9. Round the numbers and you got 20-10. Now would he do that over an entire year? I wouldn't bet on that his first year as a starter but could eventually see him putting up 20-9 on about 45-47% shooting. Slightly better than Josh Smith numbers as a full time starter. With Okafor on his last year and Nene unable to play over 30 minutes a game a young PF who can score would be helpful. I know that's why some want Anthony Bennett but why go Bennett when you have a slightly bigger Williams available and he's already shown he can score in the pros - even if not as prolifically as some were hoping when he came out of college.
My personal preference would be: trade the pick and get Williams to be the starting PF, use #9 on Steven Adams (to replace Okafor in splitting C minutes with Nene after this year), #26 on Glen Rice Jr (back up wing - shooter/scorer off the bench).
