I got a DM today from a twitter user making what I consider to be a credible claim that Ted is threatening to sue him over tweets critical of his ownership and Ernie Grunfeld's decisions as General Manager.
While I obviously think a Ted Leonsis run team is going to have a tough time winning consistently, and that in both the NBA and NHL lockouts Ted's stances represent a level of greed and lack of social responsibility that is ridiculous given the tax subsidies his teams receive and the public trust that goes into owning a franchise, at the end of the day I'm a Wizards and Caps fan. And I have supported his franchises, despite my distaste for Ted's management style and Ernie's incredibly unsuccessful tenure as GM (I think the fact that Ernie's time in DC has so far been a disaster is beyond argument). But the line has to be drawn somewhere, and when an owner starts suing customers who complain about the substandard product he charges full price for . . . well, that's the line (or a line anyway).
If this turns out to be true, and Ted's going down the Dan Snyder path (without the commitment to spending whatever it takes to win) of "how to treat people with whom you disagree" it becomes critical as fans to withhold financial support of his business.
Redskin fans already proved that when you can mitigate bad behavior by a jerk owner by simply not spending. Wizards & Caps fans may need to be ready to do the same.
