Al Harrington to miss at least 4 weeks with injured knee

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Wizards' veteran needs to undergo a procedure on his right knee and will miss at least a month, the team announced.

The news on Bradley Beal's injured leg was somewhat encouraging. The news on Al Harrington's troublesome right knee, however, is not. Harrington will miss at least the next four weeks (likely longer) after loose particles were discovered in his troublesome right knee. Via the team:

Wizards forward Al Harrington underwent a diagnostic arthroscopy and lavage procedure this evening to clean out loose particles in his right knee.  He will miss the next four weeks and then be re-evaluated.  The procedure was performed by Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado.

That ... does not sound good. The right knee, of course, is the same one that caused Harrington to miss most of last season. He also has not played in the Wizards' last 12 games, and it sounds like he won't play for quite a while. Remember: he's out 4 weeks and then will be re-evaluated, which means he'll likely need some time to get back up to speed before playing.

This, of course, is the risk that Ernie Grunfeld took in signing him this summer. If healthy, Harrington's a useful player, but his right knee is clearly not healthy.

UPDATE: Harrington has sent out the following statements on Twitter:

Just wanna say I'm deeply sadden about having to get a Procedure on my knee today. LORD KNOWS I worked my butt off to be ready to play this All the Games this Season. The infection I got 18 months ago has proven to be a Tuff mutha! But I'm committed to this team and will do everything in my power to get back. ASAP. #WIZARDS#NBA
