When the Washington Wizards selected a Small Forward with the 3rd pick in the draft 3 Centers flew off the board at numbers 4-5-6. Charlotte, Phoenix and Philadelphia have secured their Center position for the next 4 years at least. OKC and Boston also received a Center with the 12th and 13th picks. Even if Okafor did not get hurt he would still be an unrestricted free agent free to sign with any of the 30 teams in the NBA next year AND SO WILL MARCIN GORTAT, who the wizards just traded a protected 1st round pick for. It still boggles my brain that during the draft and free agency the Wizards did not try to address the short or long team solution at the Center position. People are smoking something silly when they say lets get Greg Monroe or other young bigs out there. IT AIN'T HAPPENING. They will all become restricted free agents which their teams will surely match any contract offered (and it usually doesn't even get that far. ex: Demarcus Cousins) So now what? We are projected to have like $16million in cap space money to spend. But next years free agency for Centers is not very good, so even if you want Okafor or Gorat back they are going to get premium money with at least 3 years on their contracts. The Wizards were sitting pretty with an unbelievable opportunity to have a great point guard/ Center combo for years to come. Now we will be chasing a big man just like almost all the other teams for years to come.
