Free agent center Earl Barron has agreed to a non-guaranteed training camp deal with the Washington Wizards, league sources told Y! Sports.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) September 11, 2012
With a front court rotation of Kevin Seraphin, Emeka Okafor, Nene, Jan Vesely, and Trevor Booker, Barron's role would not necessarily be large. However,Washington is no stranger to roster volatility, so it's always nice to have a reliable veteran on board if necessary.
However, the Wizards
currently have 15 full slots on the roster. If front court depth and large lineups, not to mention roster flexibility, are important enough to team going forward, one player would have to be cut in the event that Barron's training camp invite turned into a contract. Shelvin Mack has a partially-guaranteed contract, so he might be the one to draw the short straw in that scenario.
Barron has an average of 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in his career.
On another note, the season tips off in just 49 days.
UPDATE: Michael Lee reports the Wizards also will bring in Shavlik Randolph and Steven Gray to camp, along with Barron. The Wizards have 14 players under contract, so if they keep the maximum number of 15, the 15th man will come from that group.
