Grunfield's Smokescreen Pre-Draft Trade: To Get Thomas Robinson

The only trade or draft pick I have ever remembered that the world knew Ernie Grunfield, as GM of the Washington Wizards, was going to make was when he traded Gilbert Arenas for Rashard Lewis. That is it. It didn't really matter who knew about that trade because their was no other competition for Gilbert or Rashard.

Last years draft we all had a feeling we were going to take Vesely and Singleton. Singleton was a no-brainer at 18.

Now the rumor before the draft lottery was that if the Wizards did not get one of the first 2 picks they were looking to trade out of it. Who was that second player? Whoever that 2nd player was, is probably the player Ernie wants.

Fast forward. Ernie makes a huge trade, for Washington Fans, a couple weeks before the draft. He claims it has nothing to do with the draft. I THINK IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE DRAFT.

This move is designed to make everyone, and their momma, think the Wizards want Bradley Beal or Harrison Barnes. I believe it has elevated the Cleveland Cavaliers to possibly move all the way up to #2 to get one of them. I am sure it has also made Charlotte look at Beal and Barnes a little bit more.

The perception, which I instantly fell for, was the Wizards will select Beal or Barnes with the #3 pick. That they both provide offensive punch, especially from their shooting aspect. That the Wizards saw them as 1 and 1A. Now Charlotte can think that if they trade with Cleveland that Thomas Robinson will still be there at #4. Cleveland already has their Power Forward of the future. They need a Bradley Beal or Harrison Barnes.

The one thing that has me believeing that this is all a smoke screen to get Thomas Robinson, is that the Wizards have 2 very good young chips to get a big guard or small forward with an outside shot. Trevor Booker and Kevin Seraphin.

The second reason that this has me believing Thomas Robinson is the pick is why do this trade now? Why not wait until Draft day, or draft night, just in case anything else comes up. This is the clincher for me.

If we do get Thomas Robinson then I believe Trevor Booker would make the most sense to be traded.

Ernie probably already knows what players around the league he can get for Booker.

So if you see the Wizards take Thomas Robinson with the #3 pick, you may also see a big smile from Mr. Grunfield.
