Chicago Bulls Model, Gary Neal, and my boy Fab Melo

So with the draft approaching, and more imporanting right now the lottery selection next week, everybody has been throwing opinions around and I have found most puzzling. First off everybody wants to talk about identity, and who the Wiz should be modeling their team after. Teams being thrown around are OKC, Indy, and Philly, but one team nobody wants to point out are the Chicago Bulls. They are a defensive minded, grind it out team that produce results. They go ten deep, and Thibodeau trust’s every player. Every player knows their role on that team and supports their “competition” if you will. As much fun as people make of Carlos Boozer for his recent play and his undeserving contract, he is the first off the bench to support Taj Gibson at every break in the game. As much as I’d love to see Seraphin and Nene out there as our starters, the two don’t get enough rebounds. If Seraphin can start snagging 10 a game, I don’t see why they couldn’t be our version of Booze and Noah. If we could get a solid outside shooter and solid defender in free agency/draft (I’m not quite on board with Chris Singleton, but I also understand this was only his first year) to go with John Wall I think that could be a solid squad. I also realize John Wall right now is no D Rose, but the offensive production we would get from Seraphin and Nene I think could supplement that. I then think you put Crawford in the same role as CJ Watson; if he’s hot, you ride him, and if not, no biggie, throw Wall back in. But if he is hot, you know he can play with Wall, and it’s pretty clear Wall likes playing with him. Booker could be our version of Taj Gibson, and again if he’s hot, or getting the boards we need, you ride him and keep out Nene or Seraphin. Clearly this team lacks the shooting that the Bulls have, but I honestly think that’s all we lack when comparing the two teams.

Next I want to ask why everybody is all over Danny Green (i for one am not sold on him), and nobody, and I mean nobody, has even thrown out Gary Neals name. Neal is just a good a shooter, has been with the Spurs the past two years, pretty sure is an unrestricted free agent, was a four year college player, and played overseas for a few years. This is the kind of young (27 I think) and veteran back up point guard we should be looking at. When the argument of why we didn’t select Kawahi Leonard in this past draft gets brought up, everybody’s quick to say “Hey, he’s playing with the Spurs, so he’s going to look better than he actually is.” Um shouldn’t we be saying the same about Green? This is Green’s third year in the League, but for all intensive purposes, it’s really his second. Prior to this year, he had played in 28 total games the previous two years, with minimal minutes. Gary Neal puts up good numbers, backs up Tony Parker real well, plays along side Parker real well, is a great outside shooter, and Pop has no problem calling his name late in close games. I watched him play this past season and he has confidence, and doesn't force anything. If Pop has no problem with him, than nor do I.

Lastly why has nobody mentioned the name Fab Melo for our first pick in the second round? I’m a huge Syracuse fan and watched them play all the time. Fab Melo creates space for others, loves running the pick and roll, and is a block machine. I wouldn’t consider his suspensions this past year as red flags either. The first time he was suspended was by the university and totally justifiable because he didn’t meet academic requirements, so it’s not like he got in a fight or some sort of drug problem. His second suspension was from the NCAA, because they felt Syracuse brought him back too early from his first suspension. I’m just saying, the guy knows his role, and plays it well. As an early second round “project” he would be an absolute steal. Plus he’s Brazilian, you can’t tell me he wouldn’t want to play behind Nene. Oh, and almost all his points were from putbacks and alley-oops, so he’s not gonna go all Javale on us and try to create a shot he has no business trying. If I had to choose between Andre Drummond and top ten money vs. Fab and late first, early second round money, I’m going Fab all the way.
