As a Wizards fan, the last few years have been a complete and utter blunder. Terrible basketball, so bad in fact that even the casual basketball fan would agree that the Wizards are a total mess. Abe Polin passed away in 2009, and so did the plans of a veteran team competing for the championship. The Team was purchased by Ted Leonsis with a plan to build the team through the draft and free agency.
In the first year of the New Regime General Manager Ernie Grunfeld taking his boss' orders, traded away Gilbert Arenas(the one time face of the franchise), Antawn Jamison, Deshawn Stevenson, Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood. Didnt re-sign Mike Miller or Randy Foye, after giving up a lottery pick(following the now deceased owners orders)and with the young holdovers with small(nba small) contracts the likes of: Nick Young, Andray Blatche[before andray was extended] and Javale McGee the plan called to see which of those players would be moving forward with the new draft class Wall, Booker, Seraphin, Veseley,Mack and Crawford. Well after this horrible season we now know that Young and McGee will not be apart of the class, and we know its a forgone conclusion that Blatche will not be there either. Now with Flip Saunders being fired and presumeably Grunfeld on his way out it is now time to plan the future
#1. Hire a New GM. Pritchard seems to be the popular choice with what he did in Portland.
I would be fine with him as GM but I also like James Dolan.
#2. Hire a new coach. While I like Randy Whitman, the team needs a proven coach. I like Nate Mcmillan, Mike Fratello or Jerry Sloan. The Wizards need someone who will demand them to play hard, smart and hustle every single play. Anything short of that will be uncivilized
#3. Hit a homerun on the draft. I think I am in the Minority when I say the Wizard would be better off without Thomas Robinson, Anthony Davis and Kidd-Gilcrist. The Wizards need a scorer and someone to run with John Wall...Meet Bradley Beal. Yes his season statistically was off, but he has an NBA body, can attack the basket and get to the foul line, and can shoot with the best of them. He would provide some much needed scoring.
#4. We need the 2 and 3 positions to be solidified with all due respect to Jordan Crawford and Chris Singleton. With Bradley filling that 2 spot, id look for small forwards in the Free Agency class this summer. Nic Batum, Ersan Ilyasova, are the first that come to mind. I like Ilyasova because not only is he in the top 20 in rebounding but he can also shoot the 3. Something we desperatley need
#5 Finally establish roles. Everyone needs to know their role from top to bottom.
Wall, Beal, Ilyasova, Booker and NeNe is a competitive Line up when healthy, Jordan Crawford playing a Jason Terry role, Seraphin backing up NeNe and bring in FA James Jones to be a marksman shooter.
I love the team and everything about it but here is my idea of a plan for the team moving forward.
