PREGAME READING: Posting and Toasting | SB Nation D.C. | |

- It has been a bad spate of games for JaVale McGee. He went through the same slump last year at exactly the same time. Tonight, he has a chance to get on track with only Tyson Chandler standing in front of him.
- I hope John Wall takes all this Jeremy Lin hype personally.
- Will we see more efficient P&R between Booker and Wall?
- Is Roger Mason poised for a revenge game?
- Rashard Lewis won't play again in this game. Randy Wittman said he will stick with the same starting lineup.

Beat the Knicks, Let's See Some Wizardry
Score early and often. Play some defense, too.

To be or not to be
I remember Jeremy Lin lighting John Wall up in preseason a couple years ago
Hope John remembers that, too.
not a lot of Clyde love out there eh?
Don’t like posting and toasting? Dishing and swishing? Movin and groovin? Penetrating and devastating? Linning and winning?
Hey that sounded like Mike Prada asking Randy Whitman a question
Ended up on CSN pre-game…
Cool…
Mike – that WAS you, right?
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
I asked him two questions about Jeremy Lin
If the CSN pregame video was Wittman talking about Jeremy Lin, then it was my question.
less turnovers
Same effort and more assist than as against raptors and we could have our first streak of the year. Les go wiz

Lets go
Great pre-game notes. JaVale needs to prove that he can play well against top tier centers and tonight is a great opportunity against a weak New york team. Much easier for JaVale to refine his focus

And no
I dont hope this is a great revenge game for Roger Mason becuase that would mean he isn’t a DNP tonight. Just being honest but if he does play and drops 12+ I won’t complain

Seriously all this Lin hype is driving me crazy
Nothing more annoying than NY Knicks fans freaking out
I'm really hoping Wall does his best to put an end to all this nonsense
His comments about PGs going off on him after the Raptors game at least lets everyone know he’s aware.

Wizards playing excellent defense so far...

Not really
Knicks missing many open 3s. But good enough defense

I thought most of those - a Wizard had a hand in the face...
I remember Bill Walker hitting an open 3
And Bibby missing an open 3
But I think the rest were contested..
And considering New York is only 1-8 on threes – let em keep shooting
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
to be fair to McGee...
He does have 7 rebounds, and a blocked shot already
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.

Mike- I know you like the Gary Payton analogy for Wall. But he really reminds me more like D Wade than anyone else. I know his shot isnt there. But they have a lot in common:
fiery competitiveness, similar size/build, both strong off the dribble but neither can really run point, transition offense, good rebounders for their positions, stronger than average assists, defense, etc
…think about it
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 8:09 PM EST up reply actions
yeah...and he was further developed out of college
but thats whose game he reminds me most right now. it will be fun to see what he develops into

I think we should trade John Wall now. His lack of outside touch disturbs me. Yea, Rondo made it work but he’s much more capable with his passing. The problem with waiting on John Wall’s “potential” is that if he becomes a bust or just “average”, everyone else will know by that point and we can’t get anything good for him (ala Blatche).

you don't trade wall if you have any long term hopes beyond mediocrity
He could be so so. He also could be a 10 time all-star. You don’t trade that kind of potential in his 2nd year for some random junk.
I'm not saying random junk
You could try for some draft picks, that could also turn into a 10 time all-star. It just seems to me you have to try acknowledge these things quickly. The fact is a PG has a big impact on a team’s culture. NY was scrub team a week ago, now they have a true PG and they look like a team you expect to win games. Knicks should be worst team in the league right now after losing their two BEST players, but once you throw out all your big names and entitlements, you can see the value of a real PG.
Look at Minnesota, they were as bad as us last year. Only big change they made was in acquiring Rubio and bam, they’re above .500.
All I’m saying is why isn’t John Wall having this effect? Other PGs have salvaged crappy teams to be at least medicore. Wall isn’t even sniffing mediocrity.
by Ball with Wall on Feb 8, 2012 8:40 PM EST up reply actions
Look at Minnesota, they were as bad as us last year. Only big change they made was in acquiring Rubio and bam, they’re above .500.
They added one of the NBA’s best coaches, J.J. Barea and the No. 2 pick in the draft.
I'll give you the coach
But Barea has been mostly absent. And their draft pick isn’t high impact, he’s just been a role player more than anything.
by Ball with Wall on Feb 8, 2012 8:43 PM EST up reply actions
The Wolves are 5-5 when Barea plays
And just at a quick glance at Williams’ past 5 games, he has games where he’s getting 20 minutes and games where he gets 6 and 10. Yes they both have an impact on the team BUT it is clear Rubio has biggest impact out of anyone. The streets would riot if Rubio only got 6 minutes in a game.
by Ball with Wall on Feb 8, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions
They also already have an above average PF
added the No. 2 and have a more developed bench.

Wall is very talented but he does not make his team mates better right now
You need to trade him for something really really good though because he has a lot of value. And chances are the other team is not trading their comparable player, if they really are comparable

Not true
He doesn’t have the team mates that can execute to his skill level
The artist formerly known as ledellforlife.
Huh? It's true. And why an inferior NYK team is going to win tonight
Wall is primarily an iso player. Take out his transition baskets and he has an average impact on the half court offense
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 9:06 PM EST up reply actions
I think I'd trade Wall for draft picks
At least a draft pick has hope. Honestly, I don’t know any GOOD player with GOOD upside we could get for Wall.

The Pistons maybe
But I understand your point
I'm not going to think of something extra witty or clever to say, I don't want to convince you to see things my way, I just have 2 words for you: JEREMY LAMB
maybe ...but the pistons were an anomoly. they werent the best team that year. but they did win it.
and i think that ben wallace was their best player to be honest. he had the biggest impact on their games
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 8:24 PM EST up reply actions
Im thinking magic and the lakers thirty years ago...am i missing anything?
there is no scarcity value to the pg position which is why the position is over rated.
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 8:23 PM EST up reply actions
you can't get all historical about
rose/westbrook/wall style points. There are very very few physical parallels.
I am not sure what that means. Nobody was like magic. He could play and defend all five positions on the court.
Lebron James is the closest comparison to magic.
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 8:26 PM EST up reply actions
Magic was in his way even more of a freak
and was, needless to say, the best player on several championship teams.
His height made him a different player, though.
Yes...but he played the PG position
and my point was that very few championships are won with the PG being the best player on the team. There is no scarcity value to the position. You need a great player on a hard to fill position or an all time great at any position
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
I don't think I'm articulating this well
but my point is that the game isn’t the same.
Some of this is the players becoming freakishly athletic, and some of it is the hand checking rules, but I don’t think that kind of historical analogy works well for the position.
I dont get your point because the top player on championships teams today are not PGs. It's been true historically and in todays modern era
I understand the concept of not comparing different periods of ball. But if the conclusion is the same today as it was fifty years ago…it supports the strength of my argument, not weakens it
The top player on a NBA championship team is rarely a PG today, yesterday, 100 years ago, and all time in between

I'm not saying Wall's bad
I’m just saying he’s not a franchise player or the type of player many teams want or need. Wall drove on Lin, exposed his defense a bit, but he’s obviously not making his teammates better.
Lin is CLEARLY making his team better.

He plays in a defined system with a coach that's been there for 3 years.
He plays with role players that know their roles and play defense. He has an incredible center in his prime that sets amazing picks that put people in great situations. He has players that can make open jumpers that open up lanes.
The vague argument “he makes his teammates better” is full of holes and is cliche.
You don't think
The argument “Wall just needs better players” is not filled with just as money holes and cliches?

I don't bring the point up to just throw away what Lin did,
but Chandler definitely quarterbacks that team defensively well. Who on that team is a defensive stopper? We scored what? 85 points tonight?
I thought we played well tonight
We are not a good scoring team. We block a lot of shots, get turnovers and score a lot of points in transition. Force us to play half court offense, and we are bad.
I think it is the knicks protected the ball and that accounted for ten less points.
chandler is important to your point. but we dont score a lot of points in the paint on set offensive plays so i dont feel he was as impactful as you suggested.
he did have 25 points, which is A LOT for him. and a lot of that was do to Lin, especially with hockey assists

baffling. Nobody shows up in the paint for Wall. Everyone shows up in the paint to help LIn and Wall still managed to outscore him. Yet the argument for Walls D being so sad is lin penetrating………….. TO AN EMPTY LANE.
Classic example is the dunk. Lin’s dunk will be all over sportscenter and everyones facebook page. Because the pick and roll left booker and wall out of position and TWO wizards didnt collapse to a wide open lane.
Wall crosses dude up and takes it to the rim with both LIN and Chandler in the lane and dunks it. But somehow Wall’s D is garbage and Lin is “better than Steve NAsh”. I cant believe i read that tonite.

Got to the rim whenever he wanted.
I know but Lin was beating Wall off the dribble...easily.
I guess he’s quicker than we thought or John’s lateral movement is as bad some people say it is.
Lin is not fast at anything but he is constantly changing speeds
slow to med to slow…
by les boulez bomber on Feb 8, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions
He got past wall on pick and rolls, and of course our bigs didn't help
He did reject a screen one time and get past Wall, but Wall was getting screened repeatedly and had no help on the screen. He never really broke Wall down or blew past him, without the help of a high screen.
He does and he is.
With Wall’s athleticism, he would be unguardable if he figures everything out and develops a reliable jumper. Verdict’s out.
we didnt see much of that tonight.
i saw two open kickouts from wall, both to roger mason. all of youngs shots came off the dribble, i dont think he found singleton on the perimeter once. Every other time wall came off the screen he was looking to score, and most of the time he did. unfortunatly it didnt help any of his teammates get into a rhythm.
im not saying i would rather have lin, but the question was regarding whether wall outplayed lin. thats not true.

I'm not blaming Wall, he played well. We just don't run any
semblance of a professional offense.
Very true...
I wish we could run the high PnR effectively, with good screens for once. But of course everything looks bad when it doesn’t work, maybe our offense would look better. Bottom line is that Crawford and Young went 5-21, we CANT win when our best shooter and our 3rd leading scorer play that terribly. It’s not Wall’s fault and all this LIn hype is getting annoying. And i feel like everyone automatically assumes that he is some genius basketball player just because he went to Harvard. He’s a good player no doubt, but I wan’t to see him excel after a bigger sample size before I crown his ass.
I honestly don’t think that this team is conducive to winning. Look at Kyrie Irving and the Cavs, the Cavs are actually a decent team, and were able to win without Irving and the backup, Sessions, scored 24 points and 7 assists. Irving is a special player too, but his team and the surroundings are way better than the Wizards and are a huge factor in his development and success. Wall is doing what he can, and I don’t know how others say that he can’t be a point guard, or a good passer when he averaged 8 assists last year and 7 this year with a terrible shooting team.
Lin had a great game
His team will win, so they get the last laugh.
