Nicolas Batum should be option #1 for the wiz this off season

Right now we stand at $46 million, when we buyout lewis we will be at $23 million. That leaves with enough to resign JaVale at the worst case $11mill. SF is our biggest need i think batum would be perfect. we will probably have to over pay for him but that is the only way we are going to get players to come to dc until we become a playoff team. Along with drafting either Thomas Robinson/Sullinger.we will be set at ever position except shooting guard.

For sg i would bring in a gap filler like a carlos delfino, marco belinelli. a vet who can hit a spot up jumper that wall can create for them without having the offensive ran through them.

I have to disagree with rook, do not resign nick young he is way too inconsistent. I think are line-up would be sweet and finallt ready for the playoffs

Why not resign nick young

I still think much of his inconsistency is a result of our lack of other offensive weapons. If we get batum a lot if the defensive focus would be taken off

Price tag

He’ll ask for too much. Problem is that I think we could probably get him back for a salary we’re comfortable with, but he’d be a bit salty. I see another Carlos Rogers situation.

haha, that's the truth right there

But it does make it easier to cope with a lack of rebounds and assists if you have Griffin and CP3 on your team. It doesn’t hurt the team overall as much

If Nick was so great

and the core of Wall – Young – McGee was any good….the wiz would not be 7-25. The Clips fans will love Young on the one night every 2 weeks when he is 7th-layer-of-hell on Fire.

They will hate it when every single time he touches the ball he immediately stops the ball and looks for his shot no matter what the offensive set is designed and/or trying to do.

They will hate it when he gloats after the 5-8 good games he has all year and laughs it up on the bench during 25 pt blowout he shot 3-15 in.

They will hate it when he averages 1.2 assists a game over his contact and passes up open teammates to drive into traffic to throw a crazy fade-away up.

They will enjoy watching him on the bench when CP3 just stops throwing him the ball :)

by Maroon and Black on Feb 21, 2012 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

He won't need to shoot every time he touches the ball because there would actually be other offensive options

They wouldn’t care about the 1.2 assists because they have Chris Paul. And I don’t see the clippers getting blown out by 25 very much

by oakhillswag on Feb 21, 2012 7:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

which offensive set is that?

The one where Singleton misses or the one where Jan doesnt shoot?

by DCrez on Feb 21, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

what's his worth

I want to hear what u think is the most we should offer nick this off season. What should we offer a player that has not helped us make a play-off push. In a sport where one player makes a HUGE difference, what should we offer a player that has not made a HUGE difference. What should we offer a player, that is the teams first option on offense that can’t average over 20pts a gm. Forget about the reb, assist, steal, i could care less about that with Nick. On a playoff team his 17pts/gm is perfect, but on a losing squad he should be getting at least 22pts/gm.

I totally agree with you that he probably is a starter on a playoff team but at what cost. Maybe I’m wrong , but rook you make it sound like we should break the bank for him. I respect your views on the wiz but this Nick Young thing i think you have went a little too far with this. Nick is not worth more then 6 mill per year and we all know he wants a lot more money then that.. That’s the most any role player is worth because that’s all he will be.

by junn on Feb 22, 2012 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

I think Rook was getting at

..that we should not “break the bank” on him because we are not the team for him. Nick Young is our #1 option on offense when in reality he should not be. This leads to many of us heavily scrutinizing every little thing he can not do. He would be perfect for the Clippers spreading the floor and relied upon just to hit shots and play defense. Clips fans won’t care for his low assist and rebound numbers that WE constantly bring up everytime.

I hope he does leave. I just want something in return.

The Wizards have no chance at Batum

unless they give him Joe Johnson Money.

Their have been stories over the years that the Wesley Johnson and the Derrick Williams picks in those respective drafts have been offered for Batum and the Blazers turned both of those down.

They have plenty of cap space because of the Brandon Roy Amnesty, Felton’s contract is up, Camby’s contract is up, and Wallace and Crawford could opt out of their contracts.

If Batum gets away from the Blazers, the Blazers fans might burn down the rose garden

by GoWizGo on Feb 21, 2012 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Yea

We could fantasize about getting overpaying Batum but they have the Cap space to match offers given to him

by Jordo on Feb 21, 2012 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

Then why have they been lowballing him

His agent has sounded pretty pissed about the offers they got.

by gorebd on Feb 22, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Batum is restricted this summer

so portland can wait till other teams offer, and then just match that.

and the inital offer was before batum was starting at SG, since then, he has been tearing it up

by GoWizGo on Feb 22, 2012 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

What money would you throw at them?

In the hopes that they balk? I’m curious to see what kind of money people think would be required to legitimately make Portland give up. I guess it would have to be in the 5 years / 80 mil range.

This crop of FAs is kinda depressing. I really like a few guys, but they’re all going to end up hideously overpaid by some of these teams that finally have gotten under their last rounds of bad contracts via amnesty or the passing of time.

by nichobert on Feb 25, 2012 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Only Portland can give the 5th year

But doubt they are and that’s why Batum is upset. I’m sure we could steal him away for a deal similar to Gallinari’s 4yr/$42 million deal. Maybe we pay $45 million.

by gorebd on Feb 25, 2012 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

that 5 year/80 million would seem about right, or in wizards terms, 4 year/64 million.

I am a big time Batum Fan. I was really hoping the Wiz would have drafted Batum and moved up and drafted DeAndre Jordan once he slipped to the second round in that 2008 draft. I actually posted a fan post about signing a Paul Milsap-type contract on Batum last year, a huge signing bonus that would scare off portland.

They wizards right now have roughly about 20 million in cap space this summer (including rashard’s buyout and the ’12 draft pick salary). If they offered Batum all that cap space the first year, maybe that would scare portland off.

but they still have paul allen, so money is no object.

by GoWizGo on Feb 25, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

oh

as far as cap space goes, that is if Javale takes the qualifying offer this summer

by GoWizGo on Feb 25, 2012 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

wow

I thought we were going to have more than that even if McGee resigned at 10mil/per. Maybe i was blocking Blatche out of my head.

Bummer.

by nichobert on Feb 26, 2012 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Blatche can and should be amnestied, creating a bit more

I hope so

ted has saved over 30 million with the Arenas Trade, saved 6 million with mike bibby, saved 1.5 million with Big Z. So he does have some extra dough to work with, lol

Hopefully if the wizards have an opportunity to get a star player, Ted would use the amnesty on Blatche.

Keep Young, Sign Batum

I never realized Nick Young was 6’7. But, as much as people seem to dislike Nick, he’s still our best offensive option. Blazers have capspace but it was reported a couple weeks ago that Batum & his agent weren’t very happy with what Portland has been offering. What I dont want is Crawford to even sniff the starting lineup. I think signing a temporary answer at sg would be a waste especially if they arent good enough to lead us to the playoffs. I think it would be great if we could somehow get another lottery pick and draft Bradley Beal.

Seraphin and maybe Turiaf can help

Having a couple of his French national teammates and being in such an international city would probably be really appealing to Batum. Hopefully we land Anthony Davis since we have the second best odds right now. Then sign a couple of reasonable SGs that can shoot to replace Young like Courtney Lee and Belinelli. and re-up McGee.

Wall, Lee (playing that Thabo role), Batum, Davis and McGee starting. Mack, Crawford, Belinelli, Singleton, Vesely, Booker, Seraphin, and Turiaf (if his re-up is reasonable) would be a nice blend of role players to complement a very talented starting lineup.

by gorebd on Feb 22, 2012 5:03 PM EST reply actions

No way are we getting Batum

According to everything I’ve heard, he’s the Blazers number two guy behind Lamarcus Aldridge (maybe third behind Gerald Wallace) in terms of who they want to keep.
We should go for
1) Landry Fields- he’s going to get way less time now that Melo/Amare are back and Baron Davis could conceivably play some 2 guard with J.R. Smith/Shumpert when healthy. He’s a guy who works hard, plays good D, is athletic, rebounds and can score. He’s a restricted free agent, but NYC has him on such a small contract I think we could get him
2) Kris Humphries- the whole Kardashian thing has DESTROYED his value, yet he’s putting up double-doubles nightly. We can get him for cheap (2 yrs/18 mil, 3yrs/27 mil), he’s unrestricted, he’s way better than blatche, and actually rebounds, something that McGee fails to do even at 7ft.
3) Ryan Anderson- another PF who does the opposite of Blatche: REBOUNDS the damn ball. He can shoot the ball well, and is only being paid 2.2 mil this year. I would have no problem taking him over Blatche for something like 6 mil a year for a few years.

by aaron.ruby on Feb 23, 2012 3:18 AM EST reply actions

I've been thinking Fields, but....

I think he wants to stay with Lin. That’s his boy.

by gorebd on Feb 25, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I like them, but that might not be enough money

Ryan Anderson is a good rebounder and a lights out 3pt shooter. Teams are still overly enamored with ‘stretch 4s’ but Anderson can still do some more typical PF things. I’m thinking he’ll get 10mil a year from someone, but they may be disappointed at his production when Howard isn’t around.

Humphries got 8 million for a 1 year deal right in the middle of the Kardashian fiasco. I can’t see him getting less than 10-mil per either.

Batum or Anderson make sense

Depending on what happens in the draft. I think we should essentially plan to pay McGee and target a big RFA. if we land Anthony Davis or Thomas Robinson or Sully, then get Batum. If we get Barnes or MKG, then get Ryan Anderson. I’d also let Young walk and address SG by targeting a guy like Courtney Lee or Fields (though I think he stays in NY). We should also look to move up into the 20s of the draft to get a SG-SF type like Jeff Taylor who can shoot, jump, and play great defense to be part of a rotation at SG.

PG: Wall, Mack
SG: Lee, Crawford, Taylor
SF: Batum, Singleton
PF: Davis, Booker, Vesely
C: McGee, Turiaf, Seraphin

Gives us guys that truly complement our core of Wall, Batum, Davis, and McGee.

by gorebd on Feb 25, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Why would we want McGee ánd Davis?

Neither can make a jump shot or defend the post in the NBA and both are skinny shotblockers. If we get the #1 and Davis is our pick, then you let McGee walk. That would be horrible spacing to, leaving no lanes for Wall. None.

I think you're underestimating Davis

Hes a great defender, not just a shot blocker. He’s also not that bad of a shooter. He’s the closest thing to KG. I think he can be that smart player to cover McGee’s deficiencies.

I think you're underestimating the difference

in size, strength, speed and athleticism between the college level and the NBA

A wise caution...

I am watching a replay of Kansas vs OK State and I do like Thomas Robinson, but I think he is at best Antawn Jamison… a 4 pick who wlll average 18-10 and always be accused of being soft on defense.

Anthony Davis is terrific too, but he is going to be Marcus Camby good, not Hakeem good.

Sullinger? I look at him and see Elton Brand redux.

There are, in short, no game changers in his draft. But there are lots of nice pieces. The key is finding one who will be a good complement to Wall from the get-go.

This is why I think the Wizards should make a serious move for Batum. Then a draft pick of Robinson or Sullinger would work nicely.
There are a ton of ptentiall
