Rising Stars Challenge 2012: John Wall Picked 12th By Team Barkley, For Some Reason
Man, I don't even know. Here we were, figuring that John Wall would be among the first players selected in first annual Rising Stars Challenge draft. First, Jeremy Lin got added to the game, so whatever. Then, five players went off the board, including Wall's teammate DeMarcus Cousins, and Wall wasn't one of them. Then, five more players went off the board, including superstars like Paul George, Derrick Williams and MarShon Brooks, and Wall still wasn't one of them.
Finally, Wall was picked by Team Barkley at 12th, one spot behind Kemba Walker, currently toiling away on a 3-26 team. If you try to make any sense of what just happened, you're going to come up with nothing, so it's not really worth trying.
It's times like these where it's worth remembering two things.
- It's an exhibition.
- Perception isn't necessarily reality, unless Wall really views something like this as some sort of referendum on the organization, which would be kind of absurd.
TEAM SHAQ (odd numbers): Blake Griffin, Jeremy Lin, Ricky Rubio, Greg Monroe, Markieff Morris, Kemba Walker, Landry Fields, Norris Cole, Brandon Knight, Tristan Thompson
TEAM BARKLEY (even numbers): Kyrie Irving, DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Derrick Williams, MarShon Brooks, John Wall, Gordon Hayward, Tiago Splitter, Kawhi Leonard, Evan Turner

Ultimate slap in the face
Being picked several spots below Gordon Heyward. Chuck and Shwaq are obviously retarded.

i dont think its the organizations fault
its just a fun team to kick around apparently. Like they highlight our badness like none other and its just the way it is…..for now. I honestly think they’ll head will explode when they no longer have us to kick around

Totally agree with KurisuDevil
Why blame the organization? Anyone in basketball will tell you that Wall is not the 12th best player (or 12th most exciting to include in an all-star exhibition) of that group — that he’s more like the 3rd. Why would Wall ever associate this with the organization? That makes no sense at all. It is the organization’s fault somehow that TNT announcers made a mistake? You act like it’s a brain dead organization that makes mistake after mistake, and Wall will finally learn and then fly away asap, but that’s not true. The Wizards started badly this year — that’s all! Then, they improved. Things do change. I don’t get why we need to act as if we are locked completely in to a bad stretch to start the year. Life moves on.

How many people do you think have told Wall that DC is the ultimate loser organization?
As in how many of his peers have openly said to him something along the lines of “dont worry just do your time for now” or whatever?
that’s where John would pickup an awful view of the org. I am not saying he has, but come on, we’re perceived as the dregs of the league for sure
Some proponents
of the organization will deem otherwise. However once the organization take the positive strides this will be a foregone conclusion. Just 2 yrs ago the Clippers were still the worse team in the league by far. Now all of a sudden they’re one of the darlings of the NBA (ie, Lob City)?
GTFOH….
You act like it’s a brain dead organization that makes mistake after mistake
I was really fed up by that "Washington Generals" comment by Kenny Smith
Yet they failed to mention how bad Charlotte is (worst team in the league) when Kemba was picked, and how bad NJ is (just as bad as us) when MarShon Brookes was picked.
Formerly know as iNFamous SWaGG
I'm a Wizards fan and I will always be, but they are a joke. The team is garbage.
One of your “core” players—Javale—has made some of the DUMBEST, most ignorant plays in NBA history. That dunk attempt last year from the free throw line has to be right up there with Ricky Davis’ infamous triple double attempt.
Those guys are all front runners.
They made all the same jokes about the Clippers for years but now they all circle jerk over Griffin.

Anyone else kind of surprised Chuck even picked Wall
that’s like the nicest thing he’s said or done for the Wiz since Jordan was kicked out
I was shocked that Barkley picked Wall
Considering how much he just rags on the Wizards every time they are mentioned. I know we aren’t that good of a team but we just continue to get ridiculed like we are the worst team ever by everyone.
This isn't an indictment of John
it’s an indictment of the perception of the Wizards all this time.

Or rather from a month ago
But since Randy took over and John started balling again and Dray left the team, we’ve crawled out of the cellar. Now we clearly look better than Charlotte, Detroit, and NJ. That’s not a huge statement, but I strongly feel like we are getting the shaft as the “worst team of the year,” when in fact we just started really slowly and then have improved. Perception is reality and all that.
by Kenny Sky Walker on Feb 16, 2012 8:25 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
Perception is reality and all that....
…. is that for the first time in years we have ballers who by their actions and development have consistently started to show they really don’t like to loose. The national media does not see that like we do. That’s the perception that matters.
by DCPerspective on Feb 16, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
When we have personalities of the likes of JaVale, Nick, and Andray
we are going to be perceived as the worst team in the NBA when we’re also losing most of our games.

When your Lose
Nationally nobody gives a …. why you lose. And nobody starts looking for the losers that made the losers loose. Winning changes all that. You got to hustle to win, and for the first time in years I see real honest to God hustle. Wall, Booker, Mack, Jan, and maybe McGee are the future core- either way all three mentioned above (our homegrown vets) either need to step up or head out.
by DCPerspective on Feb 16, 2012 8:51 PM EST up reply actions
Kenny, you are factually right but that isn't what NBA fans are seeing
The story formed early in the season: The Wizards are incredibly bad and dumb. Thát’s what has materialized and like DCpersective said, perception is reality for the masses.

This.
Is exactly why I am pissed about the Linsation bullshit, dude is only getting this much hype because he plays for the Knicks, would anyone care if he played for Bobcats and won 7 games straight. Shaq totally disrespected Wall, when he outplayed Lin just a week ago. Good thing about this I think is Wall is probably not even worried what they think, since he is already used to the disrespect this team get’s
I think Jeremy will still get hype no matter what team he plays for
I don’t like the race card, but because he’s an Asian American, that alone will draw him tons of attention regardless of what team he’s on, Knicks, Lakers, Nets, Bulls, Wizards, Kings, or Cats.
Uhhh New York has the biggest asian media market.
Plus New York is the biggest media market in America, race has something to do with it market wise I am not taking nothing away from Lin cause he can ball, but his impact on the NBA is as big as it is because he plays in New York. Another team has a winning streak going too something like 7 wins, but they are not getting as much hype.
Houston didn't have a big asian market before Yao
being the first american player of chinese descent, being undrafted floating around the league, being from an Ivy league school… being in NY of course makes it bigger news but winning 7 straight and playing the way he has would get Lin huge coverage wherever
by koop1122 on Feb 16, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Yao got that much Hype.
Because he was the first of asian accent to play in the NBA, not taking nothing away from his game either. Also there were whispers about him wanting to play in a big asian market only and Houston didn’t fit the bill. Even though he did end up playing his entire career in Houston.
He wasn't the first
Just by far the best.

true, NYC has a big Asian American population
including in Queens (Flushing to be exact last time I passed by there), northern NJ like Bergen County in places like Palisades Park; and in Long Island in places like Hicksville and Syosset where Elaine Chao, the former Secretary or Labor is from.
But most of the largest metro cities in the US have a large proportion of Asian Americans even here in DC.
Oh hey Mayweather! Didn't see you there...
Really? ESPN has been playing and replaying exactly why there is so much hype and you are still pulling the race card?
Look, it’s not even about the race thing anymore, the dude could be purple with polka dots on his face, and there would be just as much hype about him. A virtual nobody led a 8-15 team back to .500 and in the process averaged the most of any player in the history of the NBA in his first starts, hit a game winning shot on the road amidst 7 straight wins, and all the dude does is credit his teammates.
Haters will hate, but the hype is real – gotta give credit where its due.
"Hip-Thrust!"
Mayweather ?
Fall back slim I did not say it was because his race READ MAN DAMN, I said it was because he played in New York City the biggest media market, and what’s funny I asked
" Would anybody care if he played for Bobcats let’s say and went on a 7 game winning streak" and I haven’t got a reply yet, so that pretty much answers my question right there. But I did not and NEVER did say it was about race, so get your facts straight.
I wasn't replying to you, but to thewiz06
who did indeed use the race card. so “PLEASE READ WHO I’M REPLYING TO” before using caps thank you. Also yes it would still be huge if he were on the Bobcats, maybe not as insane as it is right now, but most of the sporting world is too appreciative of true underdog stories to let one go.
"Hip-Thrust!"

Shaq did it for himself and the NBA
Shaq has market in China, he even shows up in Chinese TV shows, Shaq + Lin is gonna make some noise
Lin is a good player, but everything involving USA and China is commercial
Well, he's American
I’m from Hong Kong, part of China just like Taiwan, I don’t care about politics but I believe most Chinese think that there’s no difference between Taiwanese and Chinese (tho a lot of people from my country are still arguing about his nationality, which is pointless given he’s an American)
The NBA has tried to link up Yao with Lin as well, apparently they don’t care too, Lin’s been making headlines in newspapers and gaining a lot of awareness, that means business opportunities
In fact the Wiz could have had the same advantage if Yi doesn’t suck so bad..

Crazy history
I ended up going from Jeremy Lin’s Wikipedia page to the History of Taiwan page.
Geez. I had no idea that Taiwan’s history was so nuts. Apparently, Taiwan has been kicked around like the ball in a five-way game of soccer.
A taste: Taiwan is inhabited by Chinese people because of the Dutch! Who knew? Originally, Taiwan was inhabited by indigenous people who were genetically distinct from the Chinese. They were most closely related to South Pacific Islanders like Samoans, Tongans, or Easter Islanders. Taiwan’s population didn’t start to become Chinese until the Dutch established a trading post there in the 17th century and brought in Chinese workers and servants.
I knew ;-)

I’m good with the NBA All-Star weekend because TNT is there and it is just a loose fun weekend… the players that are there deserve to relax a little and have a good time. And the fans derserve to watch their favorite players showcase their talents
I just dont get it
Sure, we’ve had a pretty bad season so far. John had a lousy start. But the guy was MVP of last years game and set a record in assists!!! Doesn’t that count for anything!?!?!
He’s also the most athletic players in this game, let alone PGs, and thats one of the qualities that make a very entertaining all-star game.
All I can say is wtf…wtf
The Wizards don't play fundamental basketball
I don’t know about other sucky teams but I watch the Wiz and they don’t box out, John Wall is just starting to slow down and hit his big men on the break, McGee goes for every pump fake, runs down the court to play D while our team is on offense, Blatche is Blatche, NY makes selfish comments, Gun gate, Gilbert pooped in shoes, They are just starting to pass the ball and sometimes take good shots, bigs don’t know how to set a screen (whatttttttttttttt ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, that drives me crazy), lowwwwwwwwwww bball IQ players, Crawford = MJ lol
Do you guys really blame anyone for not taking this organization and it’s players seriously.
I dunno if that explains why JW got picked so late in the rising stars challenge, however if I was picking I be a little leary of a player from Washington.
I haven’t turned my back on this team and I am a fan, but I know good basketball and thats what I prefer to watch. Maybe subconsiously Shaq/Barkely have bias against the silliness that goes on with this organization.

All the while making comments that any NBA lover/fan knows are just asinine or piggybacking on expert analysis of others.
And i think before tonight, everyone was kinda like ’ mehh we deserve the jokes and etc, we do suck’ But this was just blatant disrespect in a event that had nothing to do with the organization which is what makes the whole thing baffling
OT: Anyone watching POR vs LAC

And it seems like the refs are willing to blow the whistle tonight on LAC.
this all-star weekend
Has honestly turned into a joke for one lebron in the 3 point contest, lin in the dunk contest might be the worst all-star weekend ever.
No he's not as far as I know. The list is
James Jones – defending champ
Kevin Love
Joe Johnson
Ryan Anderson
Anthony Morrow
Mario Chalmers
lets just hope
that Utah and phoenix pay for this. I could care less about the rising stars game, but lets use this to get wins
I'm a bit shocked
He won the MVP on the game last year? He’s got better numbers than a lot of those players.
He’s better than Rubio.
I hope he drops an insane line like 30/12/10 or something similar.
The whole ASG is all about drama.
And the way they changed the format of the game is just bad.
This was a popularity contest and nothing more
The wizards have never been a popular team to root for. Maybe when we had Jordan but then we sucked which is really ironic.
Lebron travels his way through a couple play off series with us and no one cares because hey its just the Wizards. Only way out of this is to win so until that happens we just have to roll with the punches.
Honestly though I can’t stand plastic fans. Bandwagoners please go elsewhere. I bet the Knicks board is over flowing right now with fake fans that will disappear once Linsanity runs its course.
Exactly.
We never bounced back from the Jay-z wouldn’t respond to Soulja Boi comment’s by Lebron or when the media asked him what did he think about the Wiz and Cavs rivalry, and he just sat at his locker with a grin on his face not saying nothing, and all the reporters started laughing. Then after that’s when I started hearing about there wasn’t a rivalry between Wiz and Cavs, because the Cavs were so much better. I used to live in Ohio like a hour away from Cleveland and my brother is a big Lebron fan I used to get it when they played the Cavs, that’s why my perception meets reality talk about some of the Wizards that are still on this team from the Big Three Era are bleak, I mean when I watch this team from a far sometimes just as a fan of the game you shake your head.
To be honest though, I can’t blame Lebron for mocking a mouthy Deshawn Stevenson who in return dissed the Bullets at the Mavs Championship rally. I blame EG I mean stand up to your owner if he is going about the business the wrong way, don’t get me wrong I would have loved to see the Big Three win a chip fro Mr. Polin, but the truth of the matter is the Big Three were never that good. As much as Twan gave you offense he gave you nothing on the defensive end, same as Gilbert that’s why there’s no doubt in my mind we are in good hands with Wall it seems at times Wall spends as much energy on the defensive end as he does on offense, Butler was the only one I think that struck fear in anybody outside this organization.
The most people remember outside of this Organization and DC about the Big Three are Gungate, injuries, and Lebron beating us everytime. Me personally would have liked to seen some activity on draft night a long time ago, like Portland and Chicago year after year. I know some will not agree if any at all for that matter, that’s why it’s a public forum.
Important to remember
That once Shaq had Rubio and Lin, and Shaq had kyrie irving there was really nowhere for John Wall to play, because they still have to field a normal lineup as in having forwards and shit. So even though he was drafted 12th, that doesnt mean Shaq and Charles think he’s the 12th best rookie/soph. BUT! at the same time. Picking Kemba Walker over him is absurd. And Since Shaq had to PG’s in rubio and lin Charles could easily have had both Kyrie and Wall. Im just playing Devils advocate, this draft makes me sick to my stomach, but some reasoning behind it makes it a little better….actually, no. This is such BS

They care about ratings and media mongering. We care about winning and getting there. Who cares where Wall was picked? He is a super star in the making. They get him for a game and Washington may end up with him for 15 years.

For some reason?
For some reason? Really? Are we all that blind? Until the last 4 or 5 games I have been massively dissapointed in Wall’s sophomore campaign. This ridiculous draft was done based upon 2012 accomplishments; to which, I really haven’t seen many with Wall – aside for what be a record for missed layups. As you know, being a top PG is more than just blazing speed. Wall seems to have regressed from last year, has literally no shot, and doesn’t do a stellar job getting his mates involved. To make matters worse, we’re forced to see the contrast between Wall and this year’s pick over in Cleveland is doing. If Wall is upset, he only need look in the mirror for ways he can improve. I’m a huge Bullets fan, but come on guys, feelings that he was somehow slighted and this ridiculous homerism is misplaced. The league, commentators, and ex players will always pick their whipping team – it’s up to the players and organization to alter that perception. I’m a little dissapointed in this post, Mike – you’re usually spot-on.

But it's not just about Wall
it’s about who was picked before him.
Look at Rubio’s starting numbers, the dude has completely fell off compared to his bench numbers. That means he had a run, but now he isn’t in the news anymore.
Lin has played 7 games, and in those 7 games put himself as the third pick in this draft. How about we look at John’s last 9 games? only getting 18 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and shooting 46%.
Then we have Kyrie, who had a hot start to the season, but since then has hit a bit of a rookie Wall and has been injured.
Then we have the worst… Kemba…
So this just shows that it’s not just about how players are performing, that its about hype and popularity. John is currently playing better than anyone in this game except for Blake and Lin. And if Lin can get this much attention over 7 games, John should be able to get some attention over this past month. It just shows that the Wizards are being looked at as a terrible team, and its reflecting on John.
But it basically just comes down to Shaq and Barkley not being the brightest ones of the bunch.
So I take it
You think Paul George, Markieff Morris, Kemba Walker, Derrick Williams and MarShon Brooks have had better seasons then?
That’s pretty much the only way your point holds up

No, I'm saying...
Wall has had a horrid season and we are getting bent for no reason. Everyone’s path is different, and I think he’ll be just fine. He’s obviously turning it around. This wall-ways me stuff is unnerving for me.
The Clippers used to be the laughing stock and their soubd personel decisions and play now does the talking. Seems to be working out pretty good for them…

Yeah, I think you're being an anti-homer
You’re being a lot more dramatic than necessary (“horrid season,” really? His overall season’s PER is well above average), because this is your team. Wall has played pretty well, and has markedly improved. The entire disrespect thing is weird – that’s not be oblivious, or blind, or homers.

Eh, agree to disagree.
His season has been shaky at best. I hope the improvement we’ve seen the last 4 games keeps up. Can you honestly say his jumper looks any better than last year?

Much ado about nothing, yes.
If Wall uses this as motivation, fine. Otherwise, it means nothing, no more than the selections we fans make for the ASG.
Shaq and Barkley don't have an IQ between them
So I don’t care about their opinions. I have no respect for them.
The bigger issue, though, is if Wall sees that by staying in this situation, he’s not going to ever get to the top echelon of the NBA. His ability to get star calls, to finally get some “and ones” when he gets mugged in the lane. To get away with brushing his opponents hand when stealing the ball — these things all depend on getting respect from the powers that be.
I hope he doesn’t take this as yet another reason to get the f*** out of dodge.

Which would make it a couple hours after the draft. He’s reacting exactly the way we were hoping he would. Awesome! Johnny Franchise may be entering beastmode soon.
I kinda think he's already there
18pts, 9 asts, 4 rebs, 47% from the field, 80% from the line in february so far, wizards playing their best ball as a team all year.

If he stays at that level for the rest of the season, while getting his TO's at or under 3
and continues to show he is looking to pass and make his team better, then we can say he is there.

Absolutely absurd
But like some of you said, i wouldn’t take shaq or chuck’s opinion too seriously. Obviously not aware of whats really going on in the league. The list of guys taken before wall is still ridiculous
