"Now, if we criticize John Wall for not making the right play, he’s not going to backlash and retract and shut down for three plays, because he knows that we care about him. Because we spent that time, and invested it off the court."

I found this quote interesting
I didn’t think the team meeting was geared towards addressing a situation with John, even partially. I do remember right after post game comments from Wall like “My job is to get put get other involved but I can’t do anything about what they do after they get the ball” and “I can only do my job”. I remember thinking and commenting that those weren’t the type of words I wanted to hear from leaders. It seems like he may have taken the meeting a bit wrong initially, but like any good leader, he ultimately used the criticism to motivate him and improve.
I actually think this may have worked, but we have seen some improvement. And the body language has improved.
It also shows a bit why Randy may have chosen to address John’s shortcomings publicly during that first press conference.
I think he should have never been proclaimed a leader from day 1
He’s a kid. He might have the right make up to become a good leader one day but couldn’t we have him tucked away behind Hinrich for 2 yrs? Couldn’t we have signed a veteran bigman who plays big minutes like Kurt Thomas last yr?
With full yr of Hinrich, maybe innitially starting over Wall and playing along side him at the 2, Lewis 3, and Kurt Thomas as a 4/5 to go with Blatche, McGee and Young we would have been better last yr and it would have been better for the development of all players involved.
I still think Ernie shouldn’t have added Booker, Crawford, Seraphin, Yi and Thorton to a young group of Wall, McGee, Blatche and Young. It just doesn’t make much sense. With or without those vets we wouldn’t have made the playoffs but atleast you could have learned them a thing or two about the game and how to be a professional in the NBA.

that may not have been his choice
Isn’t building through the draft Teds philosophy?
Not defending Ernie, but who knows if and how hard he tried
to dissuade Ted, and whether or not Ted was even willing to listen
How does that not include building through the draft?
We would have still gotten Booker, Seraphin and H.
We would have replaced Yi or Armstrong with Kurt Thomas or a different veteran big and we would not have made the Hinrich trade. That’s it.
We would not have made Wall the captain and we would not have bombarded him as THE guy right away, like Irving or Rubio this yr, he would have played 25 minutes off the bench and after a game or 10 he would start.
The thing is that he was supposed to be the leader and best player all from day one, all I am saying is, shouldn’t we have turned that down a noch.

No, Flip did but Ernie constructed the Plan to make Wall THE guy.
You know that too.

wall might still be the guy
It’s less the plan and more the execution.
Draft Wall, tell him you want to build around him, then tell him to go out and earn it
EG still is mostly to blame, he picked the players
I agree that Ernie is mostly to blame
I also fault Ted for not starting over entirely. Hire a new GM who surrounds himself with other FO people and his own coach + coaching staff.
He didn’t change anything but the assignment for Ernie.
