Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Why resign a guy that still doesn't know how to box out or defend?

McGee is clueless if he hasn't learned these two things by now. I just don't get this kid. I watch him so closely every game and he stinks. He doesn't move his feet well on defense. There is no heart in his defensive play. He can't even set a good pick. Watch Vesely set a pick and then watch McGee and you will know what I mean. Let this kid go!!

Sure

Let’s bring back Ruffin and save some money on salary so we could cross-subsidize the Capitals. And we wouldn’t even need to hire a big man coach, given that Ruff knows the fundamentals of the game. He would just need some instructions on when to throw the ball up into the air at the end of the game.

agree

i agree i wouldn’t bring him back i would try to see what u can get at the trade deadline to me he’s been in the league long enough to still be making rookie mistakes and show no growth on the offensive side on the low block and he’s selfish just like blatche. to me i would like to see him gone blatche, reshard lewis,to a certain extent young and seraphin along with ernie next season i dont want ernie in charge of the offseason draft or free agency or picking a coach

no exactly true.

they had veteran bigs and were trying to win a title. they ended up trading him after he started pushing for a trade since he wasn’t getting PT. They go Dale Davis for him who at the time was starting at PF for the team that just had been a contender.

plus McGee is never going to be Jermaine O’Neal. If he gets his head screwed on right he can be Tyson Chandler or Dalembeast. Until then he’s a notch and a half below cause he lacks discipline, lacks physical toughness, and still thinks he can be a star partly due to his offense. He can be a star, but it will be because he’s a lock down defensive guy who can excite you with his garbage man scoring.

by Staybon on Jan 30, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Heh, Dalembeast.

Doesn't match

O’Neal took a shockingly giant leap forward after tripling his playing time, and he took it at age 22/23 (5th-6th seasons, but age matters more than years of NBA experience). Not saying McGee won’t continue to improve, because he will, but it would be silly to expect some kind of Jermaine O’Neal-like leap forward.

How much is it going to cost ?

McGee has potential to be a great player.Maybe the right new head coach could help ! Shot blocking skills and rebounding would be hard to replace.Any 1 notice his new tecnique at the free throw line ? he’s worse this year than last ! I hope it wasent a wiz coach that messed that up .he almost blew that last win vs bobcats when he missed those 2 free throws that would have wrapped up the win.

Does he seem out of shape??????????

I see the posts regarding the moving of the feet and playing lazy on defense……………….I’ve also noticed he often trots lazily down the court as though he’s out of gas.

People say he’s a freak athlete……………I know he’s long and can jump………….but he seems incapable of running up and down the court 5 times without needing to take a break.

I get it that he’s 7"0 + and a lot of 7 footers aren’t great from an endurance perspective. But his cardiovascular endurance seems particularly bad. I saw something that said Flip Saunders helped identify his “sports asthma”. I have no idea what that is, but if that’s why he can’t run up and down the court a couple times without needing to take a break then he probably isn’t one of the foundation pieces the organization should be built around.

He also seems to underperform huge on the boards. He should be cleaning up the glass on both ends but he never seems like much of a factor.

Boxing out, moving your feet on defense, running up and down the floor every play take work, hustle, cardiovascular endurance and desire and he doesn’t seem to have it.

by J Korber on Jan 30, 2012 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Not out of shape. He has astma

Which should factor in as far as throwing money at him this summer imho

That's a problem................

He’s 23 and appears to be fit, but he seriously can’t run the floor consistently without gassing. If the idea is to build a team that pushes the ball (which is what Wall loves to do), then having a guy with Astma who can’t get up and down the floor is a problem.

I wouldn’t pay him $10 mil + per season. He’s worth keeping at the right price, but if the thought is he is going to be demanding big money I’d sell high now.

by J Korber on Feb 1, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Well, I agree but did you know he plays just as much minutes as the average starting center?

I guess if you play him in short stints, 28 minutes per game (just as much as any starting C other than DHoward) he’s going to be fine.

by Dutch Hoopfan on Feb 2, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure the minutes he plays are comparable with other big guys............

But I’m suggesting the effort he appears to give during those 28 minutes is often suspect, and includes stretches where he is walking or lazily trotting back down the floor. There are entire offensive series where he basically eliminates himself because by the time he’s down the floor and on a block there’s like 8 seconds left on the shot clock.

I’d rather he only play 20 minutes if he’s going to spend 8 minutes half a$$ing it, walking, and not going full speed.

I don’t know how much is health related and how much is just desire, but the guy simply isn’t giving it 100% the minutes he is on the floor.

by J Korber on Feb 2, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I think he should be played in shorter stints at least

Not nescesarrilly less minutes persé but if he can give more in shorter stints he should be more effective. don’t forget though that he is the most effective player on our roster in terms of EFF and TS%, he also has the best PER differential and biggest adjusted winshare.

Its all about discipline

Your completely right. He is a very lazy defender. He looks solely for the blocks, but does not do the other things well. Its all about discipline and the coach holding him to a higher standard. You think he would be this lazy in Chicago, San Antonio, most other teams? Hell no. He can do all the other things well, but he needs to be yelled at.

by Joe Kobos on Jan 30, 2012 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Thank you!!

And I agree with everything you said. He’s not disciplined and he is lazy. I blame the coaches for this behavior and letting him get away with such poor play. I would be going nuts on this kid. Are they not pointing all this stuff out to him in film study? This is the question I keep asking Leonsis. What are the coaches saying to him? I want freaking answers!!

by Keeferdog on Jan 30, 2012 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

If by "let him go" you mean trade him for good value, I'm on board

McGee should have a lot of value in a trade. I wouldn’t do it unless I could get a good deal, but with all the risk involved with keeping him (that he’ll never “get it” or decide to leave as a free agent) I think it would be wiser to cash in now. Maybe I’m just being conservative, but the idea of adding a guy who makes the team better along with another draft pick sounds pretty good right now. We’d have to pick up a center somewhere though — we can’t have Seraphin starting…we just can’t.

by steadyhand on Feb 1, 2012 10:38 AM EST reply actions

Could Turiaf start as a 5 short term?

If you deal Mcgee for a player and a draft pick is there any reason Turiaf couldn’t start at Center for 1 or 2 seasons? He’s 29 years old, has NBA starting experience, always gives 100% effort, and is a good defender and rebounder. He’s not a big offensive threat, but it isn’t like Mcgee is Hakeem Olajuwan on the block.

Obviously it’s not a long term answer and he’s not the future at Center for the Wizards, but he can play now while the rebuild continues.

by J Korber on Feb 1, 2012 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

Turiaf probably doesn't have to start

We can probably draft a bigman if we do trade Mcgee for a player and a draft pick

by Young Wook Lee on Feb 1, 2012 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

He means for the remainder of this season.

After we trade McGee at the deadline, we have to start someone at C and I suppose Turiaf can do that as he was the starting C for the Knicks last yr.

I would never let such talent just walk like that

You never let a big man with such potential just walk, I mean even Portland signed Greg Oden to a one year extension even though he almost didnt play a single game in the NBA. We should never let him walk, unless someone offers him a ridiculous contract.

by Young Wook Lee on Feb 1, 2012 11:16 AM EST reply actions

The guy does suffer from Astma....................

And if you’ve watched games in person he gasses quickly and is walking up and down the floor a lot.

I’m not convinced his health and cardio vascular endurance aren’t what’s holding him back.

If this is going to be a young, run and gun team…………….you can’t have a center who can’t run up and down the court a few times without gassing.

by J Korber on Feb 1, 2012 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

The goal is to win a championship

JaVale gives us the best odds. Re-sign JaVale, and I put our odds of winning a championship before the end of the decade at 20%. Let him go, and I put our odds at less than 10%.

Sad thing is that a year and a half ago, I would have put our odds much higher. Unfortunately, the Wall-McGee PnR has been even more of a disappointment than Dray.

by yop32 on Feb 1, 2012 12:16 PM EST reply actions

for us we are damned for signing him because he'll likely be overpaid

but we’re damned for not signing him either because there is no one else who can make up for his production, even though he doesn’t play with a lot of smart in his basketball.
