Wizards Brass Playing with Fire on JaVale McGee's Contract Status
There is no doubt in my mind that JaVale's #1 influencer is his Mom. She is looking out for her son and truly believes he will be the face of the NBA. (what us fans think is irrelevant).
POTENTIAL bad news for the Wizards: If Momma McGee feels that the Wizards are toying with her son, then she might actually advise JaVale to sign his one year qualifying offer and become an Unrestricted Free Agent after next year. YIKES!. I cannot fathom having a gifted Center here for 5 years and then he leaves without the Wizards GETTING A THING. Not even a second round pick.
What's the downside? JaVale delaying a $48million/ 4 year contract for a year.
What's HIS upside? In 2 years JaVale can play for any team in the NBA. He can basically tell the Wizards to kiss an area that the sun doesn't shine.
If JaVale signs his one year qualifying offer then the only thing that the Wizards could hope for is that someone would be willing to give him a Max 5 year contract so that they could possibly get some draft picks from a sign and trade.
Before we think this is crazy just remember that JaVale probably has upwards of $4 million sitting in his bank account. He is already financially set for LIFE. He wants to be great. His Momma wants him to be great. They are going to look out for his future. Momma McGee is a National Champion and former WNBA player. I don't think she is going to let her son settle for money, but be in a bad position.
If JaVale becomes a great Center I want my Washington Wizards to be the place where it happens. I am not confident in the Upper Management and coaching staff to make sure that JaVale is happy and growing as a center.
Ted and Ernie please do not screw this up.

This issue is already screwed up....
…and on multiple dimensions. It will take a new GM and a coach with a commitment to developing JaVale in order to secure him in D.C. Unfortunately, it’s not likely to happen. Hopefully, I turn out to be wrong…

I don’t know if McGee is known as a total spendthrift, but I would think you are right. The reason why is because his mom has a very tight lid on him, and that is one of the good things about her being so close to him.
I'm not sure you're right about anything here
Other than McGee being a momma’s boy, but I’m absolutely sick of this absurd argument that short coaches can’t big men. Or that you need to have been a top center in the NBA to teach McGee not to leap from the free throw line. Honestly, every time I hear it, I just want want the monologue from Happy Gilmore that goes basically “we are all dumber for hearing that… May God have mercy on your soul” to play
There are quite a few big men coaches in the NBA right now who are short:
The Jazz big men are coached by 6’6’’ Michael Sanders.
Bill Bayano, who Aldridge credits with his success, played guard at the University of Massachussets. He is now a big man coach in Minnesota, helping out a guy named Kevin Love. Man, he’s terrible…
There are plenty of tall big men coaches who are also good: Clifford Ray, Hakeem, and Patrick Ewing instantly come to mind. In fact, if I had my top choice to serve as the Wizards big man coach, I’d pick Danny Manning. He had lots of success with Cole Aldrich, The Morris twins, Darell Arthur, and Thomas Robinson. So I’m not saying that you should ignore taller coaches. It’s just patently absurd, however, to think short players can’t coach big men.
Additionally, there are plenty of great coach in the WNBA. There is no shame in coaching female players. If you think otherwise, you should say that to Bill Lambeer’s face. Mostly because it’d be funny what he’d do. Well, I’d find it funny.

Your missing the point. JaVale has options
And the Wizards may lose him after next year without getting any compensation.

trade him before that.
also, better to let him leave for nothing than to sign him to a long term deal if he’s still got a screw or two loose and his mom is hanging around like this is a youth basketball league.
Laimbeer is a punk. He was a punk player in his day. Dirty. Hit players when they weren't looking.
He fits the WNBA coaching mode. He’s a punk.
Wow uh
No.
1. This is sexist.
2. Overly negative
Cut it out.

Ha...totally agree with you on the coaching
There are alot of organizational flaws but the “Big Man” coach thing is such a farce. Not particularly logical but it gets alot of play because you can make a few cheap jokes. If they wanna bring in Hakeem or Ewing that’s totally cool with me I just think the thought that it has to be a famous center to be a good big man coach is fairly absurd. If people are saying McGee would only listen to a former center well that would just be an indictment of Javale. It always cracks me up when people start that tired old monologue cuz it makes me wonder if during Pete Newell’s coaching days were the fans grousing to each other about how he needed to bring in George Mikan to coach the big men.
