Uh oh
“Thus – when Ernie Grunfeld recommended we make a change in the Head Coach after another tough loss on the road; I reluctantly had to agree.”
I guess Ernie’s still got Ted in his pocket.

That's such a copout line.
“I reluctantly had to agree?” It’s YOUR friggin team! You call the shots!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The Washington teams need to switch owners.
lol
thats a joke right

Ted probably feels a lot better about writing this today
after seeing Perreault get a hat trick against Boston last night.
when ted mentioned buy out, I guess Shard will be out after this season………
This sounds interesting
“Right now – everything is under a microscope – we know we have to make more investment in additional player development and we shall. "
I picked up on that as well....
I’m wondering if any SIGNIFICANT additional coaching changes are coming… or if any changes will be merely providing more katsup bottles….
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
heh, katsup
Always makes me chuckle. If these upcoming changes are anything approaching cosmetic, I will become homicidal

That was the only hopeful statement in the piece
The rest showed no vision, no idea of whether Wittman in the right guy to develop the players, no idea of whether the team is on the right course, etc.
That's the only positive I saw.
I’m hoping he’s history at the end of the season. Then—new GM, new coach, lots of player movement.
I liked this one
We are continuing to rebuild; I am sure our roster will be changing as we monitor and assess where we are; I am sure that we will add to our team and subtract from our team via trades- via the next draft – via free agency – via buy outs. We will use all the tools available to us to improve.
Blatche, Lewis, Young, well everyone whose last name isn’t Wall….

I thought of JaVale McGee’s mom when I read that. They may have to cater to her if they want to keep the talent.

Yeah....
Right now – everything is under a microscope – we know we have to make more investment in additional player development and we shall.
We know we have to implement a system that compliments the talent we have – you heard yesterday talk about "tempo and pace"; and "length ,and depth and athleticism".
that was a good point Pam McGee Ted Leonsis made…
For an owner's PR piece, I agree, that is a fairly strong statement
I think Ted has made it clear that the onus is now on (a) Ernie, to make a couple of deals to relieve the team of Blatche (obvious) and the potential trumoil of JaVale contract negotiation that cost us an arm and a leg for a guy (and his Mom) who will always raise questions, (b) the players, to play up to their potential and demostrate real learning, and © Wittman, to prove he belongs in the head coaching ranks (this is, one suspects, the last shot he will ever get at the brass ring) .
his best Ted's take yet
shot across the bow to the entire team and FO staff imo
The statement read
"…and allow us time to continue to asses where we are going and the best investments to make to improve the team." Was this a fraudulent slip? He probably was thinking what are those “asses” doing!
However, not sure why he was reluctant to let Flip go. Hopefully, he his not reluctant to let Erie go!
Long-Time Wizard Fan
He is clearly BS'ing...
proof of that is in this quote…
we will work hard to build a team and a franchise that is world class and is as good as our fan base.
everyone knows we have one of the weakest and worst fanbases! (minus everyone on this blog of course)
you can’t fool me ted!
fans aren't just about quantity
it’s also about how dedicated the hard cores are, and that’s who he is pitching to.
I believe
In Randy Wittman. That presser was directly to the players. Let’s finally see that change in DC and it starts against the bobcats tonite.

i don't
lets get a real coach please

"When you play for the Wizards, [Gilbert Arenas] is like Michael Jackson. He's playin with a lot of Tito Jacksons." - Charles Barkley
wittman is a real coach and has been an asshole type thanks to his college upbringing
but just because wittman is more of a disciplinarian doesn’t mean that he knows how to create good game strategy either….
Randy's as HC is much worse than Flip's.
He’s been on the coaching staff all along. Supposedly, his input was always considered (or, according to him, he’d be long gone, right?).
What changes do you expect to see?

Mike Wise said he'd give up half his salary
if Wittman went 5-5 in his first 10 games. Home and homes with Charlotte and Toronto and a Knicks rematch also at home make this a VERY interesting bet.
yeah, that's a bit bold
last i checked charlotte and toronto are about as bad as we are
by DarrellWalkerFan on Jan 25, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions
I don't think that is to out there....
We are not that good…you have to assume we will blow at least one of those games…
Hey Wizards! Prove me wrong.
Trying to read between the lines
And then I gave up. This team is so frustrating right now it is hard to take a step back. This patience thing is hard. Plus, I’ve had a lot of coffee this morning. I read that word, “process” and almost broke the monitor.
I think we will play better for a short period of time under Wittman, but my hope is that a new coach and GM will be in place soon. If Ted is going to replace the coach, and he lets Ernie pick the coach, he is “all in,” to borrow a terrible marketing mishap.
Will Ted really wait the rest of the season to decide what to do with Ernie and the coach? I’m not sure that’s a smart thing to do, but what do I know?
Other than these monumental issues, I think this team can still be well-built going forward. We are not totally screwed yet, but all this patience is getting the best of me. At some point you have to make moves.
in a million years i would never have guessed i'd somehow have grown to despise
the words process and transparency.
Can't fire Ernie before the trade deadline
That’s about the only thing he does well:
Kwame for Caron
Kirk for Crawford and the pick that begat Singleton
Only thing I found interesting was that he mentioned buyouts
which I take to mean that Rashard and Andray are unlikely to return next year. Still, getting rid of players is fine, but you need a plan to replace them with BETTER players.
ted may have mentioned buyouts to emphasize to the fans who weren't at last week's chalk talk.
there are folks who think he just wants to pocket cash, or save money, ideally both, and mentioning buy out shows that he’s not just trying to spend little if that’s what’s best.
Don't listen to what he says, look at what he does
After the first pre-season game, it was obvious that the Wizards had problems on multiple dimensions (as recorded here and elsewhere), The team went 2-15 before making one change, presumably prompted by EG.
The team replaced the head coach with a look-alike assistant coach that Flip recruited.
These two steps are incremental and do not reflect a thorough understanding of the situation.
It situations like this, cutting out most of the rot at one time is the best way to turn-around the organization.
At this point, the players and the fans (if not EG) are waiting for another shoe to drop.
I don't mind losing anymore...
Watching this team this season tells me one thing, We NEED more ping pong balls in the draft machine. This team does not have the necessary talent to compete. This draft has a lot of good PF/C. We need to get tough playmakers to light a fire under McGee’s ass so he knows he’s not the only option at C. But a POWER Combo PF/C with 10-15ft jumpshot would be perfect. A SG and a SF with good shot wouldn’t be a bad either. But in the short term we need to sign some people that can make some shots, this team is SOOOO bad at scoring outside the paint its pathetic.
But a POWER Combo PF/C with 10-15ft jumpshot would be perfect.
Wow – you’re right… a tough, physical 6’11" power guy, with a post game, and a nice mid-range jump shot would be good… but it would be even better if he were a beast on the boards… Hmmm…. seems like I remember someone like that came out last year… and the Wizards refused to move up to draft him….

Much as I hate that we didn't grab him...
is it worth this year’s first rounder, and last year’s haul? We may not have all the information (surprise) but if that was the case…

Good teams get deals done....
Bad teams lament that the “other team wanted too much”… or “it takes two to make a deal” , or…..whatever….

You’re probably right — we don’t have the benefit of knowing what Ernie did NOT do get Kanter. Like, offer the 2013 unprotected instead of the 2012; throw in the Singleton pick, or Booker, or even JAVALE and take something good back. Hindsight can make things look worse, though…
Now, we’re in the unenviable position of overpaying JaVale or unloading him for much less than we might have received from Utah….it’s UGLY….
by Tbonebullets on Jan 25, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions
Totally
We should have just traded Quentin Ross for Dwayne Wade.
by Kenny Sky Walker on Jan 25, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions
you think that would have been worth it?
like I said, I don’t know what happened, and should probably go a step further and let slip I wouldn’t mind seeing Rich Cho in DC…
by Bullet Nation in Exile on Jan 25, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions
what about 6, 18, 34? or 6, 18, Blatche
That was my take IIRC….not saying Minny would have done it…but seeing where we are, I still would have done that…
Here's Ted's quote at the time
"We were very surprised at the price" to move up," Leonsis said. "I mean, to move up a couple of slots, they wanted our 6th, 18th and 34th pick, or 6, 18 and our first-pick next year. And that just seemed off strategy, and I think that’s important, to stay on strategy. And we want young players."
What this doesn’t recognize is the tremendous gap between Williams (or Kanter) and Vesely in terms of filling the Wizard’s needs. Arguably, that is EG’s job to figure out. Anyway, we screwed now. And who knows who he has been coveting overseas for the next draft…
given that Nick, Lewis, and Dray will all be gone next season
Vesely needs to be able to start at 3 or 4 next year or Ernie is a bum.
I thought the asking price was too steep
I recall reading they wanted the #6 and the 2012 pick. That seems like a pretty bad deal if that’s the best we could do.

I don't dispute this
But I am curious what sort of deal you think we could have made. I was on board for McGee for Kanter straight up, but I don’t think that was enough for them.
by Elvin_is_my_Elvis on Jan 25, 2012 12:51 PM EST up reply actions
They wanted much more..
I recall Ted saying they wanted all the picks for 2011 year and the first round picks for the 2012 draft as well. I don’t think McGee was even mentioned.
Kanter is really not very good (just my opinion)
If he was he’d play way more than 13mins/game
Heh.
That is so you… Kanter is behind Jefferson, Millsap, and Favors. Jefferson is finally beasting. Millsap, as always, is a steady producer. Favors is ahead of Kanter development-wise. Kanter is doing just fine, Utah just has an enviable frontcourt…
by jones-y on Jan 25, 2012 2:01 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Appreciate the compliment, because "so me" in this case means
I have watched him play several times and think he’s not very good. As I mentioned, watching the Utah game the other night the commentators said “he plays in slow motion.” Kanter is a big, slow, ox…he looks nothing like the guy that surprised everyone at the combine. Will he be good? Maybe one day, but right now he can barely get a shot off
Point taken, but that's still a dcrez comment through and through.
Didn’t mean anything by it…
Anyhow, I’ve also watched several of his games. I think we can conclude that he didn’t ‘bust onto the scene’ if you will, but that’s just about all we can conclude, given his circumstances. And I think, given those circumstances (he basically had no training camp, no offseason contact with the coaching staff, and hadn’t played meaningful basketball in 2+ years), he’s doing just fine.
He's good a big slow guy
who can do some things the Wizards need but wouldn’t really be a good fit for them if they want to run.
I think ZaZa is a really solid player I would love to have had
but the hype around Kanter was at “dominant force in the league” levels
By the way - who is the 4th best per minute rebounder in the entire league right now?
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Hint...
It’s not Kevin Love (17 rebounds per 48 minutes)…
It’s not Kris Humphries (15.0 Rebounds per 48 minutes)….
and only 2.5 rebounds per 48 minutes from Dwight Howard (#1 rebounder)….
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
Spilt Milk...
Its done, we have a good chance at a top pick this year. Lets just get someone good and move on. But Ernie needs to be let go the moment the Season’s done. We cannot have Ernie’s hand in this year’s draft, NO WAY NO HOW.
Do you mean Derrick Williams?
Jury still out on that one.
Yes. It's Kanter

Kanter and of isn't close imho
Kanter is longer, bigger, and that helps him on both ends of the floor.

StubHub is now showing tickets at 99 cents
must be as a result of some STH’s electing to have the “price drop as the game gets closer” option…. We’ll see if it goes to 30 cents again….
ted needs to feel it in his pocket
as an owner, he’s committed to financial success. at least, i’m assuming the wizards and the history of the franchise are not his immediate concerns. financial success in sports comes from winning games and playoff series and hopefully championships. an owner like cuban would be ideal—committed to winning, but also passionate about the team. i don’t feel that from ted. but still, from a business perspective, he at some point will have to realize he’s not maximizing profit potential. and a big cause of that? ernie grunfeld. hopefully this realization comes soon. but wittman is more of the same, so i’m not even sure why he’s giving him a chance. frustrating. i think ted is committed to eg at least through the season, which is so frustrating, as prada pointed out yesterday in his summary of what needs to change. lastly, ted made no mention of new training staff or positional coaching staff (which would include a shooting coach). spend money to make money, ted. put your team in the best position possible to win.
This doesn't mean much to me
Ernie is still here, so the rot is still eating away at the foundation, thus hampering the “rebuild”. Unlike other new owners, Ted has been here for all of Ernie’s tenure. He has seen first hand that Ernie builds sub-par teams, wastes draft picks, and comes up with every excuse in the book as to why he should be given more time. Well, the sand has been still in the bottom of that hour glass for way too long. You started the healing Ted, now finish it.
Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.
On a side note
Ted made a post stating that he’s a Fugazi fan. That just gave me a lot more respect for the man.
