Wondering if it would make any sense for the Wiz to shut down blatche a la Dirk to get him in better shape. Judging by the size of mid section i’m sure that it %85 of his problem. Or maybe his absense from the lineup would restrict the team to much offensivley which I can say is a valid point.
some things I saw last night from John Wall that excite me
1. I saw two floaters, with one of the glass
2. Multiple changes of paces..
3. Defense, Defense, Defense….Charges, Steals, taking the Pierce challenge
4. Consistent Free Throw shooting
5. Finishing strong at the rim…with either hand…but now with the correct one based on defensive positioning..
6. Leadership body language…
We have a keeper…the type of guy that can look like the best player on the floor at times…and now clearly over the last three games the best Wizard on the floor.
Good to see
Clark Kent remember he is Superman.
The offense seems to work a lot better when it starts with JW in motion and not just a pass for a Nick or Blatche ISO.
He's over 24ppg, 8rpg and 8apg over the last 5 games
WOW!
Small sample size though and he had stretches like this last yr too.
He shows progress in controlling his own speed indeed, but the opposing teams are still directing the pace of the game. If John want’s to be a top tier pg, he has to improve in that department. His jumper, pick and roll demand and on ball defense are still miles from where they should be.
He also needs stop getting dominated by his match up. Ty Lawson, Russel Westbrook etc had his number on the defensive end and you can’t have that from your best player. It has been like this all yr and it was like that last year too.
So, yes it’s good to see him bounce back from his awfull start to the season, but he isn’t as good as I expected he would be at this point.

What i enjoyed
was that when john realized his shots weren’t falling from deep (for him), he began attacking in a controlled manner. His FG% was higher than usual because of it. I know Sam wants him to keep shooting but he has the speed to make a choice…he made the right one this time.
PS: Trevor Booker is getting screwed PT wise… Blatche needs to be released, just get him out of here, forget trades of value, he’s a slug

Stopping guards in today’s NBA is not an individual responsibility. The rules no longer allow that. All their numbers tell me is that the Wizards team defense is below par, exactly has it has been for years.
This
I think our on-ball defense is actually pretty good. The problem is that our bigs over help (JaVale because he’s over eager, Blatche because he’s overweight and hasn’t adjusted his defensive instincts for his reduced mobility), and then we fail to adequately help the helpers.

Our team defense looks vastly better with Vesely in the game
and that’s a huge indication of how much Blatche/Mcgee frontcourt isn’t working…at least defensively.
I was never really concerned with Wall's game
Wall needed to play better and seemed to be pressing to break out but I figured he’d come around he just has too much raw talent and with experience he would smooth his game out more and more.
He just needs to work like dog to refine some of his skills like developing a paint shot like a floater and work on a standstill 3 pt shot. He may never become a solid mid range shooter but might not have to. if he gets a floater then develops a 3 pt shot he can use those to dominate games.
Jason Kidd never developed a mid range shot mechanics and balance was never right but he became a knock down 3 pot shooter.
he then used his speed to dominate games finding guys becoming a more efficient passer.
I think Wall has used Rose to become sorta the example to pattern his game but I think a scoring version of Jkidd might be the better player to emulate he’s faster than Jkidd was has more hops and lateral quicks to penetrate but doesn’t shoot it well from the mid range but also has some of Jkidd’s passing aility.
I think at his peak Wall could become a 21, 9,6,3,1 guy becoming a great defender along the way a potential lockdown defender.
He’s really impressing me with his ability now to get in front of guys and draw charges not just weakside but on the ball.
as he gets stronger he could be a monster defensively.
I believe in Wall
I think he can be a franchise player, if you consider Gary Payton to have been a franchise player. I didn’t think so earlier this year. I was very concerned.
But all of sudden we are seeing better finishing at the rim, change of pace, a floater or two, and a quicker less deliberate release on the jump shot. I also think I’m seeing better defense, particularly off the ball. He still has a tendency to get too high in his defensive stance, especially when anticipating a pick, allowing fast PGs to drive by him.
I should add
that I think long term John Wall has as much ability as any player in the league not named Lebron James to consistenly post triple doubles. I think he’s going to have a 20 pt, 10 ast, 8 rb season one day.
I still think he can be the best guard in the league
in a couple of seasons. Kobe will fall off. Of course there’s Wade, but his explosiveness should be falling off pretty soon. Wall is longer, faster and a better leaper than Rose, Westbrook, or Rondo. He’s got that will to be great and I think we’re seeing him take a big leap now, but year 3 is when he really starts to transcend.
I also think we’re selling him a bit short on what his averages can be. If he’s been putting up 24, 8, 8 in this stretch. I think he can be a 25, 10, 7 guy. He’ll be our main scorer, but has the ability to get it out to his teammates when he draws attention. We just need to make sure we get guys that can finish and convert his passes to actual assists, especially within the half court. His assist numbers would be higher if it weren’t for “velcro” on some guys hands, hero ball, etc.
Point is, he’s turning the corner and will put up MVP type numbers if we get smart, quality players around him.
he can be a better defender than rose and westbrook
and a better offender than rondo

don't know about a better leaper than Westbrook...
but much more of a passer…but will need to continue becoming more consistent on jumpers
Nice article, Mike.
.
Wall is a good kid (who could be a junior in college this year).
I have every confidence that he will put in the work to make himself the best he can be and respond well to challenges and criticisms. Like another earlier comment said, he needs to work, work, work. And get some help with direction.
Cowturd will be proven wrong in the end. I just don’t know what all will happen during the offseasons in Washington over the next couple of years and whether or not John will end up reaching his potential as a member of the Wizards. It would be nice.

I'm actually loving his defense lately
He’s getting in opposing PG grills as soon as they get over half court; he’s doing a better job of the surprise strip on opposing big men; he’s drawing charges at a mad man’s pace; and he’s flying all around trying to close out on rotations. I didn’t see the Denver game, so I don’t know how he did against Lawson, but he had Avery Bradley’s head spinning.
One note about the “I’m gonna guard Paul Pierce” thing: It does show JW’s fire, but Flip’s gotta go with Booker or Singleton there. This can’t be a precedent, because Wall shouldn’t have to guard LeBron, Kobe, etc. as well as float our ship offensively. Case in point: when the Clippers beat the Heat last week, Lebron guarded CP3 during crunch time, but CP3 most definitely did not guard Lebron.
Tonight will be fun to watch against Jrue Holiday
I believe Jrue has got the best of John the last 4 games..? (2 reg season, 2 preseason)
Rebounding?!?! WTF?
We all knew Wall was fast, that he could pass, that he was a phemonemal athlete. But what it is with all these rebounds? The dude is averaging 8 rebs the past 5 games? That is a helluva lot for a guard and is the biggest surprise for me so far this year.

I'm relieved that John is starting to round into form
I still think there are things that he is certainly gonna have to spend a summer working on in order to fix, like dribbling and shooting. He has the drive, now if his work ethic meets his potential he should be just fine.
Is this where we go to mock those who crapped on Wall a couple weeks ago?
There were a lot of people coming out of the woodwork saying Wall was no good, and that they’d much rather have Turner, Irving, Rubio, McGee, etc., etc., than Wall. Do those people feel foolish yet?
Seriously though, the change from two weeks ago is remarkable. How does a guy improve on that many facets all at the same time? Was he just in a funk, or did something really click for him? He went from almost never using change of pace to using it several times a game, and at the same time started playing better defense, shooting better, and showing better court vision. The only thing I can think of is that it took him a little while to adjust from college/summer league game speed to NBA game speed, and now he’s caught up. If that’s true, then watch out, because it would mean he’s going to continue playing at this level.
Not only speed
but also making decisions with the ball about when to shoot. He is now learning how to integrate his shooting in to the offense flow. The more comfortable he feels letting go of the ball, the better he will shoot. It takes time, but does mushroom tea.
