Around SBN: Now They've Screwed Spurs, UEFA Willing To Review Rule

The Wizards, according to sources, have long coveted Green, who played locally at Georgetown and who would provide some desperately needed maturity and young experience next season for one of the league's most callow teams. Assuming the Wizards use their amnesty provision next summer to free themselves from the final season of Rashard Lewis's contract -- $22.69 million -- they'd be in prime position to give Green a big payday, assuming everything checks out post-operation. And if the Nets, say, lose out in the Dwight Howard-Deron Williams sweepstakes, they'll have a lot of flexibility, too.

David Aldridge. Not a big fan of Green's game myself.

I suppose this is why we can’t let him stick around for another offseason. Giving Jeff Green a big payday? Off of heart surgery? Jeff Green!? Cmon!

The Abe curse: pick up inferior talent because they sell tickets as former local stars. Don’t do it, Ted.

Dixon probably fits that bill

But, Blake was a pretty great 2nd round pick.

MD and GT are pretty good basketball programs. A lot of times the talent they produce is good enough to play in the NBA.

The other “local” players are usually picked up to fill bodies in training camp. It helps to have a few more bodies when practicing and these guys are local so they’re easy to get.

In 2007, White appeared in the Sci Fi Channel original movie Alien vs. Alien, aka Showdown at Area 51, playing a hulking alien warrior intent on destroying all life on Earth. He had no spoken lines in this film.1

Nelly mentioned him at the end of his hit song St. Louie.

Agreed, something like 3 million dollars a year would be about where he should top out at

Someone will pay him more since he’s a former lottery pick, but the difference between him and someone like Cartier Martin or Chris Singleton isn’t that big. In fact, I think he’d be only a marginal upgrade (better passer and ball handler, roughly equivalent defender at the present) over Singleton.

Seen this all before.

Another guy that Ernie really liked and wished he could have drafted. That’s how we got Crawford, Hinrich before that. Randy Foye. Etc, etc, etc. Why would we want to give Jeff Green a big pay day? Especially after he misses an entire season of basketball, this just has Wizards written all over it. If Aldridge’s sources are correct, and they usually are, this tells me Ernie needs to go ASAP. He’ll continue to make the same types of moves, and we’ll continue to add “young talent” that just needs to develop. If Ernie stays another year or two, we’ll be John Wall, JaVale McGee, and 12 or 13 tweener forwards that are athletic and need to develop a jump shot. Ernie needs to go before Flip so no more questionable personnel moves can be made.

from what I understand he can be signed now

and then join the new team next season. I also don’t get the feeling that the Celtics feel hard pressed to keep him. Maybe the 9 mil. will get him. 10 mil, maybe. Blatche for Green? Blatche isn’t getting more than Green this season. Green is useless to the Celts and Blatche is useless to the the Wiz judging by todays game.

Not to play devil's advocate, but at least Shard and Dray can defend power forwards

Booker has trouble there and Singleton’s not built to bang. Green’s a solid wing defender, but he’s hellish as a power forward.

He's a good player, but the money could be spent in a much more responsible way.

We will have the money to sign an all-star caliber player to a max contract or a couple of really good players to decent contracts. With Singleton, Vesely, and Booker already on this team, why give Jeff Green a large contract, especially considering he will not have played a game for over a year.

Totally agree

I think Green can fill some holes that we currently have, but definitely would not want to overpay the guy. He will have been out of the league for a year, and now has a history of heart problems. I would have to question what type of shape he would even be in next year.

by TheRealBigMike on Jan 17, 2012 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Wow

I never understood why anyone considered Jeff Green an even league average player. He’s a power forward who can’t rebound, camps on the perimeter, and can’t even shoot the three anyway! He isn’t good at anything! He’s terrible, wouldn’t pay him the minimum, let alone this reported “payday.” Good god

There’s this. To say you don’t even plan on matching Jordan’s contract is pretty bold at this point. Especially the way Javale has been playing. Maybe just posturing, but it turns out the thought of losing him actually scares me.

by returnofswagger on Jan 16, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

Screw it I could just do this too

JaVale McGee, Wizards (18th)
The Wizards would like to lock up McGee, who is second in the league in blocks at 3.2 per game, 10th in rebounds (10.1 per game) and has shown improvement at the offensive end. But at 1-11, Washington is not anxious to put big money into any of its players. The Wizards have learned from extending underachieving Andray Blatche a couple of years ago that paying for potential is not the way to go for a team that has so much rebuilding yet to do.
That means while McGee and his agent, B.J. Armstrong, are surely looking at the four-year, $43 million that the Clippers gave DeAndre Jordan by matching the Warriors’ offer sheet in December as a reference point, the Wizards aren’t inclined to go anywhere near that kind of yearly outlay; witness their unwillingness to offer restricted free agent Nick Young anything more than a one-year, $3.7 million qualifying offer, which he wound up signing. Barring an 11th-hour compromise from one side or the other, the Wizards will let McGee and Armstrong find a market this summer and then decide whether to match any offers he receives.

I'm a Wizards fan. We've been trying to tell you about Lebron for years. Hated the man before it was cool.

by returnofswagger on Jan 16, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's not quite as bad as how you read it

I hear that to mean that we aren’t going to START there, but if that’s the market rate, then we’ll make a decision on it. We don’t want to pull another Blatche and give a guy a contract that is way more than market rate for a project that is not yet developed, unless our hand is absolutely forced, forced meaning JaVale signs an offer sheet with another team that we have to match to keep him.

by jakenbake on Jan 16, 2012 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

But its more than obvious that he’s going to get at least what Deandre Jordan got. I would really hate for a bidding war to get out of hand this summer which is highly possible for a guy of Javale’s age, position, and potential. Especially if you plan on keeping him. Start trying to tie him up now. That’s what the rebuilding teams do like OKC. Shows that loyalty Ted preaches. As a matter of fact, I find it a bit contradictory, assuming he does want to keep Javale.

I'm a Wizards fan. We've been trying to tell you about Lebron for years. Hated the man before it was cool.

by returnofswagger on Jan 16, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

True, but unless we offer the max, there is 0% chance eihter will consider coming to D.C.

Even if we do the chances are slim. However, if we can present a picture of signing both of them to combine with Wall and McGee, (we are about the only team with that kind of capspace I think) thén it might be worth considering for them.

Typical Ernie move

See someone you like, completely ignore every stat and sign that says he’s not that good, but go after him anyway…

So this is following the OKC model? Signing the players they decided to trade away?

We are going to need a GM that doesn’t make up his mind years before making the decision.

Green looks like Blatche's ceiling as a player

a jumpshooting PF – meh… I can see EG going for it if only to satisfy himself that he was right to extend Blatche and to show everyone how ’good the results could have been…

On a related note, I keep reading that OKC will struggle to keep both Harden and Ibaka. I’d happily take either one of those guys – a top notch SG/secondary playmaker or a bruiser PF – yes please
