Wolves/Wizards Trade, Rearranging Deck Chairs on the Titanic is Not Pointless

Greetings Wizards fans from a Wolves fan who has been looking at both of our rosters and can't help but be reminded of swiss cheese. I think we can help each other, much like how when you traded us the #5 pick (Rubio) for Mike Miller and Randy Foye. I kid I kid, that was uncalled for, sorry.

I'll just go ahead and post my trade idea and explain why I think it works:

Michael Beasley SF - 1 year, $6.3 mil

Luke Ridnour PG - 3 years, $3.7 mil

Nikola Pekovic PF - 2 years, $4.5 mil

Martell Webster SG - 1 year, $5.3 mil (2nd year is unguaranteed)

for

Nick Young

Rashard Lewis

Hmady Ndiaye (or however you spell it)

For the Wolves, it is simple, we need a SG that can play 30 mpg and score the ball. Right now we have Ridnour starting there and he's doing his best but it's a less than ideal situation to say the least. Our other SGs Wayne Ellington and Wes Johnson, are complete trash. Nick Young, or as I like to call him "SG Mike Beasley", would be a good fit on this team. As for Rashard Lewis, I don't have too much hope for him, but if anyone can fix his shot, it's Rubio with his uncanny ability to set his teammates up for wide open 3 pointers. Even if he continues being not so good, he's still better than Wes Johnson.

For the Wizards, from my point of view this trade is all about shaking things up and filling holes. Ridnour is a nice backup PG with the ability to play SG because he is one of the best shooters in the league. In my opinion it would benefit Wall greatly if he had a veteran such as Ridnour to help him out at PG. Beasley is a talented scorer that would play big minutes at SF until the rookies are ready to take over. He will be a restricted free agent so you would get a free look for the rest of the season as to whether you want to re-sign him or not. He could also get some opportunities at PF on your team that are unrealistic on the Wolves with Love and Derrick Williams at that position. Martell Webster is currently hurt and is hurt quite a lot, but when he's healthy he was top 10 in the NBA in 3 point shooting last year and is a good defender. If it doesn't work out, his contract is nearly completely unguaranteed next year so there is no risk involved. Nikola Pekovic is a good low post scorer and as strong as any player in the NBA, but he has struggled to adjust to the NBA so far and fouls way too much. He's buried on the wolves roster because half of our team is power forwards, but I think he could help another team in a limited backup role. Ridnour, Webster, and Pekovic are all good teammates that would steady your locker room dynamic. Beasley is a good guy that makes dumb decisions, but is by no means a cancer. Plus he's from the DC area, that has to count for something right? If this trade were to happen, I'm assuming you would probably cut Roger Mason to get back down to 15 players.

In conclusion, I think this trade would help both teams, maybe only slightly but it still helps. Maybe I am way off-base here on the value of some of these players, it's tough to know how much fans of other teams value their players. Let me know what you think in the comments and feel free to rip on me if you think this is a terrible trade!

It could probably be sold

as a chance for Nick to showcase his talent on a (possible) playoff team. We certainly can’t do that for him in DC this year to be sure. And he can be a contributor on a team weak at SG as a good shooter who plays solid man defense.

I’d be more worried on your behalf, since many see Nick bolting after the season anyway for a bigger market. The Wizards are dragging his stock down this season, and assuming he is an impact player for the Wolves, it might get him just enough attention to leave.

If Nick won't veto this deal,

then I wonder why Minny would want to cut loose with Ridnour right now. I’d keep him through the season as a mentor to Rubio. We did that with Kirk and look at what that brought us, assuming you want me to think negatively here.

JJ Barea is Ricky's mentor

It helps a lot that he speaks Spanish. Barea fits on our team better than Ridnour does, it’s as simple as that. Rubio has moved into the starting lineup and is playing 35+ mpg. There isn’t enough room for all 3 of them.

Alternative

I think O.J. Mayo is available, and I KNOW Anthony Morrow is available (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/15/nets-grizzlies-continuing-pursuit-of-mayo-trade/).

I would go after Morrow (you know….a shooter) and jettison Crawford and if necessary 1 of the 3 Round #2 picks that we have. If you want to kill that sense of entitlement you have to foster competition and I would love to see Morrow and NY get after it for playing time. Crawford is NOT going to push NY to play better.

I like this

Low key move as NJ is trying to shed more cap room for the summer. Would be a smart move for us.

Eaxctly - Gives you options
  1. - He pushes NY and NY performs like a guy that deserves his $9mil and you have a solid backup and can draft PF instead of Lamb.
  1. - He becomes the starting SG and you burn a pick on a PF
  1. - He plays better than NY, but not elite and you keep him and draft Lamb to start

But the biggest plus about any option…..you get rid of CRAWFORD!!!!!!

Shit

At this point I’ll approve just about any trade. Change for the sake of change sounds good to me. At least Beasley can score. Watch out for guys on motorcycles cruising the Beltway with guitar cases though.

It is and it isn't...

We’d be giving up a decent amount of talent, but with a proper SG and some roster balancing this team would be 6-6 or even 7-5 right now. Both Love and Rubio are playing like all stars. The problem is that when Tolliver or Darko are in the game at the same time as Ellington or Wes Johnson it absolutely destroys our offense because they are such nonfactors.

I also think that Rashard Lewis can help this team if he can remember how to shoot. Plus this teams more veterans and less young players with potential. Maybe this is all wishful thinking and he is washed up but it’s worth a shot.

by roundhouse on Jan 15, 2012 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

What's wrong with Wesley Johnson?

He is tall, athletic, can shoot, and has good defense. What more do you expect?

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

by Krobify on Jan 15, 2012 10:09 PM EST via mobile reply actions

More like he is just tall and athletic

He can’t shoot at all. The other game he went 1-8 on 3’s and most all of his shots are wide open looks. His defense is average at best. He gets no rebounds, can’t pass, and is afraid to cross the 3-point line.

He has the 9th worst PER in the NBA out of 322 players and statistically is the worst player in the league who averages more than 20 minutes per game.

Honestly he deserves to be cut but Kahn doesn’t want to admit he was wrong on yet another draft pick

by roundhouse on Jan 15, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

I didn’t realize he was that bad.

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

by Krobify on Jan 15, 2012 11:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Oh yea and I forgot to mention

that he can’t dribble at all. It’s so painful to watch.

by roundhouse on Jan 15, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

Dude....

Wes Johnson is/was our “starting SG” this season, and has attempted TWO FREAKIN FREE THROWS in 250+ minutes, while playing in all 12 of our games.

That is just absurd… he sucks so bad.

I’d make this trade every day of the week.

by College Wolf on Jan 16, 2012 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

Wesley Johnson

Plays defense that is no more disruptive than Luke Ridnour’s.

So…He can’t shoot. he has NO confidence. He dribbles worse than Rasho Nesterovic. He’s probably the softest player on the team.

Wizards should trade for him :)

by SirLusciousLeftFoot on Jan 16, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

He’d fit in perfectly lolololol!

;-)

by College Wolf on Jan 16, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

Ok...

Add in Wes Johnson and Blatche.

But then you also have to give us another first round pick. ;-)

by College Wolf on Jan 16, 2012 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

Seriously though, you cannot trade Blatche unless you inlcude our unprotected 2012 first

That’s not me being sour, its reality.

This is an interesting discussion...

I would really want to trade Blatche for Beasley but the larger deal you put on the table is tempting. The Wizards seem to have burned their bridges with Nick (we have looked at the future of players who are QA’d with their original team and few stay). Since I live in Europe I see a lot of Pekovic and I think he is a legitimate back-up center to McGee. Ridenour is a nice piece too.

So, Blatche, Young and a 2nd rounder for Beasley, Ridenour and Pekovic. That could work. Cuts all our links (save McGee, the one keeper) with the Gil years. Gets us a legitimate mentor and running mate for wall, a 3/4 with upside and scoring ability, and a back-up center who can go up against the Zaza’s of our NBA Southeastern Conference world. Talk to Ernie :-)

by thewiz06 on Jan 16, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

If you guys ever need the cap space you could always use the amnesty clause on Blatche

His contract/attitude/demeanor makes him one of the most untradable players in the league right now IMO

by roundhouse on Jan 16, 2012 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yep.

I think we should trade Lewis for whatever, amnesty Blatche next off season, draft a stud in the top 5, re-sign McGee, use a combi of Singleton, Booker, Crawford, Vesely, Seraphin, Mack, 2012 second rounders and capspace to trade for a really good player (signing one through FA is not happening, we’re Washington), and then try to get 2 or 3 good vets of the Hinrich, Kurt Thomas type.

This rebuild is saveable but I have no faith in Ernie to pull it off.

Free agents sign everywhere there's money

They sign with the Clippers, Utah, Milwaukee. This whole “no FA will want to come here” is completely bogus. There’s simply no evidence at all. Maybe not DHoward or LJames, but good to great players sign EVERYWHERE. Boozer signed with Utah — which plays IN UTAH — while they were bad and while he was in his prime because Utah offered him money. Caron Butler signed long term with the Clips and their racist, slumlord owner before Billups and Paul arrived. This whole “No FA will come here, waaa!” thing is so overblown. Same with the Wall will want to leave after his rookie deal thing (even though no top rookie ever has done that if his team wanted him). These things just don’t happen. Same with Blatche — a very offensively talented 7-footer who can play the 4 or 5 and who is paid less than Amir Johnson — not being tradeable. That’s just not what’s really happening; it’s just a lazy way to complain.

TRADE? Sure!

Yes I’m all for a trade with MINN, lets trade coaches. I belief we wood get more wins from this young WIZ team.

Since you guys are here...

What do you think the percentage is in keeping Kevin Love?

:)

by AnyGiven on Jan 16, 2012 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Slim. I don’t think he wants to be in Minnesota long-term. Then again, who knows. I could be wrong. Just a feeling I get from body language/demeanor, interviews, etc.

by College Wolf on Jan 16, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

They can offer him a lot more money

But even ESPN’s “Rumors” about him working out a deal before Jan. 25 concluded with a pretty sour-sounding quote from Love. He probably wants to play in a bigger market where his ridiculous play will get the attention it deserves.

by mindstaterev on Jan 16, 2012 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

He'll stay in Minny

especially if that core can get close to the playoffs. The Wolves have played very well this season.

by thewiz06 on Jan 16, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

I see him staying too.

I'm a Wizards fan. We've been trying to tell you about Lebron for years. Hated the man before it was cool.

by returnofswagger on Jan 17, 2012 10:15 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

I'm going to say 50/50

because nobody knows which way he is leaning. One day he’ll say how much he likes MN and wants to stay, then the next day he’ll say something that sounds suspiciously like he’d rather be playing in California or wherever.

by roundhouse on Jan 16, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

I would like to extend Young. But if the FO is for sure not re-signing Young then I’d trade him, but switch Beasley for Wes Johnson. Johnson is bad now but playing out of position and at least has some future upside. Beasley is an undersized 4 who can only score, which limits him to the Corliss Williamson role on a good team.

by Mr. E on Jan 16, 2012 9:00 PM EST reply actions

I'd accept it in an instant

1) Rashard Lewis gets traded, enough said. That gives our younger bigs/wings the minutes they need this year without problem.

2) We desperately need a back-up PG and while Mack is decent for stretches I love Ridnour’s game and he is very efficient. Should also be a good veteran presence there to calm things down (I dont think any great young PG has done it on there own)

3) Interested in the Beasley rental. I have always been intrigued with the potential of him coming here (even though he’s underachieved coming out of K state). Singleton/Vesely/Booker need developing but you never know if a guy is able to put it together and Beaseley is probably the best talent among those players

4) Doesn’t look like Young will be around next season regardless.

I'm not going to think of something extra witty or clever to say, I don't want to convince you to see things my way, I just have 2 words for you: JEREMY LAMB
