John Wall's dunk was NOT cool
Am I the only fan who was disappointed when Wall decided to take that breakaway to the rim himself, over John Lucas III?
Nick Young was open under the basket. Young was already on his way to a poor shooting night, and sometimes an easy layup or dunk can get a player started. We needed offense all night, and Wall is our PG, whose primary responsibility is to get his teammates involved. A savvier defender than Lucas might have drawn a charge there, and it would have been another turnover for Wall.
To me that play embodied the selfish, problematic style of play that has been discussed all season. I would have much rather seen Wall make the pass and get the assist.
Watch the replays, Young doesn't even congratulate his teammate after an impressive And 1. He simply turns and walks away. I don't really blame him, and it's disappointing that our franchise PG is contributing to lack of team ball.
And I'm the fan who gets laughed out by friends for my eternal optimism and faith! I understand that the play was an incredible display of athleticism. But in the context of the game, and the team, I don't understand how this play can be celebrated. At all.
Does anyone agree? Am I crazy? Help me out here.

I agree with you
The PG needs to give his scores some convidence by getting them going with easy buckets.
Also, Lucas had position and should have just taken the charge. Wall would be called for a charge and would have looked as dumb as McGee did versus Miami last yr…
Very dissapointing play, but the kid is so down on himself that he has to get (mentaly) ‘right’ himself first so I think he was trying to get his self going. Still, the wrong descission.

Couldn't disagree more
At the end of the day, 2pts is what matters. Lucas was backing off, so it’s a judgment call at that point whether it’d be better to take it himself or if he thought Young would have a better play on it. Since he ended up with an essentially uncontested dunk, it seems he made a good call.
However, there’s absolutely no excuse for Young sulking on that play. Your team just scored two points and your teammate just made an exciting play. Turning your back and sulking like he did is disgraceful (or at minimum, a clear declaration to Wall that “I don’t like you”). I actually rewound to watch the dunk, then rewound again to watch Young’s incredibly selfish response.
Where did Nick pout?

Also, looking at the play…Nick didn’t provide a great angle for a pass…maybe an alley oop…but that is a lower percentage play…
I actually generally agreed when I read the post, but looking at the play, it isn’t as cut and dry as I remembered.
About the Nick Young angle
Im not sure at what other angle he could have filled the lane to accept a pass?
At first I agreed with the post, then watched the video and agreed with you, now I am back to ‘he should have passed’. The team scored nonetheless but in almost 99.9% of those situations I’ve seen Wall in, the defender stepped up to take the charge.
The oop also would have hopefully boosted Young’s confidence and got his more into the game. Wall should have given it up instead of taking those extra strides to the rim. We did see a failed Young ally-oop earlier in the year so maybe its a confidence thing.
I'm not going to think of something extra witty or clever to say, I don't want to convince you to see things my way, I just have 2 words for you: JEREMY LAMB
yes...and oop was fine from an angle...
but he could have stayed back a bit giving Wall and option to pass….looking at the film, it looked like he got himself directly in line with Lucas…making any other pass virtually impossible..
but it could be the camera angle…
like people have said
based on where nick was versus lucas, i don’t think it was clear-cut that a pass would have been a more high percentage play there. it depends on angles and what the defender is doing.

Sorry - I just don't see any sulking on that play.....
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
yeah, plus the dunk got us some momentum
and it was straight up nasty. Keep doing that Johnny!

When your teammate makes a play...
You congratulate him/celebrate with him, even if it’s just a quick high five or grin. When you turn your back on him, that’s making a statement. The statement here seems to be “I wanted to get those points.” His body language also seemed all disappointed, kind of slow and slumped. I don’t think Nick’s a bad teammate or anything, but that was either contributing to or resulting from bad team chemistry.
Agreed
Bugged the hell out of me and he seems to be looking for those lobs, in general, less this year. It’s like he just decided that every break, no matter what, is his. It is slightly troubling.
I agree but last year he was put in position to lob more it seems like mcgee was in poisition to recieve lobs more now he’s at the freethrow line

maurice cheeks would be great for us. he can help our best player wall and preach defense plus they need to play more uptempo to play to wall’s strength dont you agree

You are absolutely right
I have been screaming that like 10 times per game and typing it in all caps in the game threads. PASS THE BALL JOHN!!! It’s not just helping out your teamates, it’s fundamental basketball.
Maybe it's time
for some of you guys to find another team to root for, since you clearly hate everyone on the Wizards.

not about hate
I love Wall, his game and his explosiveness. The dunks where he leans one way, then drives the other way for dunks (he did this during Minnesota and Chicago games) are unbelievable. His speed is unreal and he can catch defenses off-guard.
So this isn’t about hate. This is about hoping your franchise cornerstone would play some team-oriented ball, and distribute to get his slumping teammates involved.
It's not about hate at all
It’s about a bad basketball descission descission. Remember Javale last year against the Heat? I believe it was Young that time as well, wide open under the basket. Javale got called for a charge and the community pulled out their pitch forks and torches and rightfully so.
In this case we are talking about John Wall, who says he wants to be the leader and has his struggeling #1 scoring option in need of an easy bucket to get a confidence booster. Walk the walk John.

Wasn't Wall having a bad night too?
didn’t he need some confidence? He got an and one! I can’t believe you’re complaining about this. It was a good play.

Oh please
Jordan and Laettner are the only Bullets I’ve ever hated. Hell, I don’t even hate Dray. Regardless of what this generation of hip hop wants you to believe, criticism isn’t hate.
It's got nothing to do with hip hop.
….That’s hating on hip hop.

No
That’s hating on what passes for hip hop these days. There’s a subtle difference.
I liked it
because it was a statement dunk. He’s frustrated with losing and his team hasn’t been helping him very much this season and so, #$%& ’em.
Really?
Those are the expectations for our star player’s attitude? "My team hasn’t been helping me very much this season an so, #$%& ’em?!? Sounds like that will help us to a lot of wins, and help Wall develop some really great habits for future, more relevant seasons.
Maybe after Nick missed all the open Js Walls got him
Wall was afraid he might miss the layup. When you want something done, you gotta do it yourself. Maybe Flip has told him, “hey Johnnie” (I imagine that’s what Flip calls him. Maybe J Dub.), “your teammates are shooting under 40%. If you get a look at the basket, take it.”
I dunno, he has the worst fg% of them all so far....
Wall mostly takes shots he should take, but misses. He should keep taking those because its the right basketball play. This dunk was not the right basketball play.

What I find somewhat odd is seeing Wall's dunk is such a rare thing. If you watch the Bulls Rose has a couple of dunks every quarter
I’d like to see Wall do a lot more dunking. If he’s got a clear lane Dunk away. I’m not a fan of him flying past the basket at breakneck speed and throwing the ball at the basket and mostly missing. That is a weak, weak shot, He either needs to learn how to do layups, or just keep dunking the ball. I read Wall is the 40th rated PG which put him behind some backups. I’m a hugh Wall fan I came here as a Wall fan and now I’m a Wizards fan.
Rose has 4 dunks this year to Wall's 6
And Rose has played an extra game

Just has to slow down wall if he slows down and make open shots he easily has 22 ppg just need some shooters around him to space around so more then he will be fine our superstar in waiting is fine
by Wall is a Player on Jan 12, 2012 9:23 PM EST reply actions
i thought he should have passed it
but things were happening fast. i’d let that one go.
He made it. That is a good thing.
If missed that then yes be should complain but he made it, i really don’t see anything wrong with that.
Huh?! Making a bucket doesn't make it a good shot
It’s about making the right play, especially from the PG.

Huh?! scoring 2 points is the wrong play?
If he missed, then it was the wrong play.
Yes.
For example If you have a relative small chance of making a shot because you’re double teamed at the perimeter, the better play is passing it out of the double team because some-one closer to the basket is wide open.
A wide open midrange jumper by John Lucas the 3rd has a bigger chance of going in than a heavilly contested midrange jumper from Rose, so it’s the better play.
This is the exact reason why the LA Lakers are pretty mediocre last year in terms of offensive efficiency in the clutch (Kobe shooting though shots) while the CP3 lead New Orleans Hornets were the #1 ranked team in that department. CP3 made a play and who ever is open got the last shot.
If you still don’t understand, than I am probably not explaining it well enough but I wouldn’t know how to explain it to you differently….

If you chuck up a half court shot with 20 seconds left on the shot clock
its not the right play.
If it goes in and you get 3 points, its still not the right play
meh...
I didn’t have a problem with the dunk at all – it was easily the highest percentage shot out of all the options. I’m with MR on this one. I’m not exactly sure why we’re nitpicking an “and 1” play especially considering that John is struggling just as bad as Nick. What I DID have a problem with was the staredown he pulled right after the dunk. As if he didn’t learn from the Stiemsma posterizing that earned him a T.
It's not "whiny"
It’s just an example of not passing to a teammate on a fast break. Maybe it’s not the most cut and dry, but I have noticed it more times than I can count. To be a great point guard, you have to pass the ball to your teammates, not take the shot for yourself — especially when you miss the shot.
It goes back to what Magic Johnson said
And Ricky Rubio echoed just a few days ago – the PG should be looking to make two people happy, not one (i.e. get the assist and get teammates involved, not only to get his own buckets).
It’s a mindset that some of us are obviously looking for from John and that some of us obviously don’t give two hoots about.
For me, the right play is to give the ball up and get the other guy involved. And there really shouldn’t be any two ways about it when it comes to your “pass-first point guard”.
easy for CP3 or Rubio to pass to Nick there
because they arent capable of elevating for that dunk. Wall definitely went #1 in part due to his size and athleticism….should he not make obvious use of them when he has an open look to the rack?
Nick Young made an equally selfish play early in the game. When Young was on the break he had Mcgee wide open under the basket and an easy alley oop opportunity was passed up so young could take a 18 foot baseline fadeaway instead and he missed it. At leas Wall made the dunk

We keep saying John Wall
He’s just learning the game, how can he know unless he has a teacher. Under Saunders he looks to be regressing and our wonderful owner is sitting there letting it happen. Don’t blame the student so much, what about his teacher and the Wiz University (organization).
WHAT!!!!!
I can’t believe this. He literally almost dunked over JL3. Literally, he would have done it if JL3 set up for a charge. Even Lucas knew that which is why he moved away. A pro like him knows that taking that charge means getting payed, he just knew he was going to get posterized so he got out of the way.
On top of that, Nick Young wasn’t running a great angle, more like, John didn’t run a great angle. So there was no pass angle like, look at the play again, how is he supposed to give it to NY once he hits full stride? There was no angle, and plays like this get players going its not just about the two points. It was MUCH more than that, although we still lost the game.
Why would you try to make the one good thing from that game a crime?
