Check in with the Knicks while you're there
They could use you.

I second this
Right now, I’d take Spike Lee for him.
Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

If he needs surgery
Does that change the way anyone feels about his season so far? Not trying to troll, just curious.

not really.
to me his huge problem this year, and always, has been conditioning. he’s weak, lower and upper body, and carrying extra weight. even with a nagging shoulder, i think he could have come into camp in shape, at least leaner, and been more effective.

I'm not sure there is much that could change about how I feel about Dray at this point.
If he’s got an injury, that’s a bummer, and maybe it explains some thing on the court, but it still doesn’t change the fact that he’s got to go: he’s not getting it done on the court and probably needs a change of scenery if he’s ever going to get his mind (and body) right.
I think when you’ve got a high energy player or one who is a true leader but isn’t getting it done on the court because he’s injured constantly, that’s a tough enough call to make (Arenas is a prime example). In this case it’s really pretty simple.
Like many I’m just exhausted by seeing the flashes of consistency and effort at the end of seasons followed by preseason proclamations of newfound dedication that go unrealized 10 games into the season.
Snarky posts aside, I legitimately hope he goes somewhere else and realizes that organization has no real investment in him bringing it every night and will cut him if he can’t keep up. Playing the “what if” game with this kid and imagining what his career would have been like had he come up in a different organization is an interesting one indeed.
Sadly, an injured shoulder does nothing for his immediate trade propects...
I do hope he gets some good medical treatment and heals up quickly, though, because, also sadly, the Wizards very much need Dray on the court as matters now stand. Without Dray as a scoring option, defenses are free to blanket Nick and harass Wall all game long.
Will someone remind me why we resigned Mo Evans.
Evans is injured
Otherwise, I have no idea. Ernie thought we were a little thin at SF I guess…..sigh

Yes, we go from bad to worse
Unless we find a really good shooting 4 /5 on waivers somewhere. Last nights game flow makes it dramatically apparent that our scoring options on the second team are slim and none. If we lose ground every time the second team comes in, I am not sure how we can win a game.
On the upside, more lottery balls.
Oh..and he can’t hurt his trade value while he is out.
scoring options on the second team?
First team as well. We’ve scored 17 points in the first quarter of our past 2 games.

Worse opposition
We got better on defense and worse on offense. Overall, I feel better watching this lineup, but I’m not sure it’s actually better. The good news is that we’ll have a high draft pick in the strong draft coming up. We can let these guys play, figure out what we’ve got, and then draft a good scorer.
by steadyhand on Jan 12, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
we'll see
in some ways it’s a worse lineup with a lower ceiling, yes, but if these young guys defend well and maximize what they can do out there, that’s better than getting mediocre performances on both ends of the court from a lineup with more potential.
neither lineup is good, but like you allude to, it’s something we can build on.
by DarrellWalkerFan on Jan 12, 2012 6:22 PM EST up reply actions
gotta start going to Javale early, see what happens.
That’s just where we are now, and it’s what development and seeing what young players can do is supposed to look like.
not to mention as much as it will bother many sensibilities….all that talk about “keeping Wall happy” can now be transferred over to Mcgee.
you're going to need to change the coach for that my friend
PnR has never been a staple of Flip’s offense anywhere as far as I know.
Pick and Roll is a staple of the Hawk

Flip ran it in Minny with KG . A lot. He ran pick and pop with Sheed in Detroit as well. A lot.

KG has always been much more pop than roll
he was living on 16-23’ Js under Flip
i hope not
this is a bummer though b/c we could seriously use his scoring off the bench
by DarrellWalkerFan on Jan 12, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
That's kinda what I was thinking
I was intrigued by how he could have worked off the bench with Shelvin Mack, since he’s more half-court oriented, which plays more to Blatche’s strengths.

I second this
I actually think he could be a really decent first off the bench guy. He’s terrible at establishing offensive flow, but once the team has that going, he should be able to step into it. Also, his defenses weaknesses would be minimized against other team’s second string.
by Elvin_is_my_Elvis on Jan 12, 2012 2:06 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Not really.
First, I’m not in the “he’s still so young!” camp. He’s been in the league long enough that I doubt he is going to move to whatever the next level is.
It’s always some conundrum with him – “playoff starts here,” but he’s still chubby at the beginning of the season.
He wants the ball in the post, but he’s a “finesse player”
He’s ok coming off the bench, unless we’re losing…
No bad vibes to the dude, it sucks that he is injured. But looking at this team, where we are at, and (hopefully) the positives the future holds, I don’t see him being a big part of it. He’s a below average starting forward making above average starting forward money. I don’t think this year or next year, or the year after that, will change where he stands.
To be fair, Dirk is a finesse post player. So is Jamison.
There are others. The type of player he is isn’t the issue (defensive fit next to McGee excepted). If it was, that would be like complaining that your greyhound isn’t a rottweiler. In other words, complaining that your greyhound isn’t winning races is a fair complaint.
The issue is his effectiveness as a finesse PF. That’s always really been the true core issue. On court production. In other words, complaining that your greyhound isn’t winning races is a fair complaint.
And he is most certainly not making above average starting PF money. $7m is well below average for a starting PF.
Is that the same injury he had last season?
Shouldnt it have been taken care of by now, as in, either rehabbed til it was 100% or the surgery option already taken?
As to his season….Dray got old real quick. I think he is what he is, there is no more “potential” to wait on, he just isnt very good. I think his lack of conditioning stands out like a sore thumb on this current roster, we have so many athletes…and then there’s Andray. He’s looked really bad this year, really really bad imho.
As much as we could use his scoring off the bench, in the long run it’s better for the team if others are forced to play in his absence imo
Yeah that doesn't matter.
the word itself is awesome. Especially when you’re not referencing a wet basement… That took me back to high school right there…
In other words...
“No really, everyone, I AM hurt! I wasn’t benched! You gotta believe me!”
Not really any doubt about why he was benched -- Flip made it clear
He was benched for his play (or because of Booker’s play). He clearly injured the shoulder last year, so I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the injury. However, it’s perfectly reasonable to wonder if he would have sat out if he were starting. I figure he was trying to play through it, but playing badly and getting benched made him decide to try to get it sorted out (or maybe it was the grind of the season making it worse). In any case, his absence opens up even more playing time and shots for the kiddies.

speaking of which.....Jan
so far he has played 41mins and taken 4FGAs….on this squad, that just cant be. Would have been nice if he could be brought along ultra-slow and be Mr.Intangible and all that, but he’s the 6th pick in the draft and the team is dying on offense. Flip’s gotta tell him to start trying to score, he needs to begin raining bricks like everybody else- this “offense” does not have the luxury of playing any purely energy guys. Jan, Book, CSing….all gotta try and get buckets son!
jan is on the floor with crawford
ergo no available shots for him to take.

no effing doubt about that
look how much these guys hustle…..they were sick and tired of Blatche and if you have any doubt just look at Dray’s comments re: players only meeting.
if we are happy, imagine the 3 and 4's in our lockeroom that are thirsty for minutes
I swear if booker can knock down those elbow shots, we have a core piece for the next 7-10 years. So far our keepers look to be as follows:
Booker
Singleton
McGee
Wall
Everyone else, good luck
by WizKid27 on Jan 12, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
love me some Book, but afraid he's on the fringe
as in he’s the guy that will have some trade value by the end of the season and whom Ernie would be willing to deal for something
Booker already predicted a double double and a W
so i think he’s pretty down with this
by Wizards Khalifa on Jan 12, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions
if you had to choose, would you keep him or Singleton?
one of them is a keeper and the other probably an “asset”
Wall, Mcgee, Booker, Singleton, Vesely
do we really have 5 true keepers already? Given the state of affairs and the moves that will need to be made to raise the talent level….I’d think we only have really 2 maybe 3
With what has been seen out of Vesely so far
In a much shorter time span he has showed more than Singleton in the same amount of time. So…if you have to keep folks at this point in time, you keep Vesley as one of them. Just like Crawford was a keep at the end of last season and now I would pay someone to shoot him in the face when he takes a terrible shot, which is ALL OF THE TIME!!!!
Redskins @RGIII - 2012
We have ONE victory
I share the optimism about Javale and others, but let’s see him do it for an extended period. I love Booker, but how is he different from Dom McGuire (who was a much better shooter)? Booker or Singleton need to turn into Robert Horry to fill our needs.
by Unselds on Jan 12, 2012 3:14 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
i agree with you generally here -
these guys are good, honest pros who are limited. but booker is already a better shooter than mcguire. and he has a real post game. mcguire had no discernible offensive skills other than hustle
"hindsight is 50-50" - Steve Spurrier
by little stevie colter on Jan 12, 2012 3:41 PM EST up reply actions
Disagree
McGuire could hit the occasional three. Booker can’t hit a shot from anywhere where his wrist isn’t touching the rim.
by Unselds on Jan 12, 2012 4:22 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
my memories of mcguire are different, but it's a small point
with booker, i do think he has post skills, just wish he was a little bit taller (que the music)

I'm with you - my memories of Dom are WAY different
I think Hollinger called him the worst offensive player in the entire league. I think Booker is much, much better offensively – as in he looks like a player on offense and not just a spaz. Not to cut on Dommy Mac, I loved him the way I loved Mitchell Butler and Larry Stewart. I just think Book is better.

Butler had some big scoring games...
Charles Jones and Michael Ruffin before the Toronto debacle fit in here.
Can he see a heart doctor too?
Just saying, he needs miles and miles of the stuff.
In all seriousness, I hope everything goes well for him. Even athletes that drive me nuts, I want them to be healthy. I can’t imagine basically losing your job because your body just won’t perform anymore. That’s one of the reasons I still have a soft spot for Gilbert Arenas.
thats real
maybe he’ll realize how lucky he is to be a professional athlete, and how quickly all that can be lost…Could force him to up his heart/effort. Actually, this is Dray…he wont change.

I don't feel sorry for Gil
He was lazy and had a poor work ethic after the injury. No way an MCL should have affected him to the extent it did. Even Otis Smith said that he thought Gil needed to strengthen his knee more.
Formerly know as iNFamous SWaGG
That's definitely not the reason. Gil's work ethic has never been in question.
He’s never been lazy, always worked hard, and tried multiple times in many different ways to get better. Different people have different reactions to that kind of surgery. Some guys can make it back quickly, others take longer to come back, and some never fully recover and it becomes a recurring problem. Unfortunately, Gil was part of the latter. It’s a shame he was never able to recover, but it cannot be blamed on his laziness, attitude, or work ethic.

It was more than he worked too hard (and was stupid about it).
He came back too early, didn’t listen to his doctors and reinjured it. Gil always had a tremendous work ethic.
Gil was Mr. In the Gym at 4am
I thought everyone always said he had an awesome work ethic. And Otis Smith was surely not talking bad about him. You got those anti-rose colored glasses on tight.
by Kenny Sky Walker on Jan 12, 2012 9:07 PM EST up reply actions
Gilbert, Lazy???
He could be called a lot of things, but “lazy” is not one of them
He turned himself from a second round pick to a 3 time all star and all nba player.
That takes work ethic
seriously
he lived in the gym. His work ethic was something i wish the current wizards players had. He had more heart than this entire team combined. Dont disrespect Hibachi like that. He’s done plenty of things wrong in his NBA career, no need to make shit up
by Wizards Khalifa on Jan 12, 2012 10:24 PM EST up reply actions
When he was a kid, Gil and his Dad lived in a Car!
By sheer force of will and incredible work ethic, he pulled himself up by his bootstraps and made himself one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA.
If the current Wizards had a fraction of Arenas’ work ethic, then they would win more games. But they don’t.
Call Gil goofy, crazy, insane, but please don’t call him lazy. That would be a lie.
and he used always give his jersey to the fans post game
i just miss him. Such a homie. DC needs a Gilbert 2.0
by Wizards Khalifa on Jan 13, 2012 1:27 AM EST up reply actions
Work Ethic off the floor =/= Work Ethic on the floor
Gilbert was one of the hardest working players off the court no doubt. On the court however… couldn’t say the same.
It’s just like Iverson. No one was gonna say he was a hard worker off the court (“we talking about practice?”) but on the court, there may have not been a harder worker.
If Gilbert had the court intensity of a Chris Singleton or Trevor Booker, he would’ve been even better…
But your point kinda stands, if Dray had Gils work ethic, he would be so much better. I wish John did as well, but as of right now, I’m not seeing it. He has the drive, he just needs to be steered in the right direction.
