Gilbert Arenas tweets that Wizards leaked gun story
Not to rehash this again, but here is Gilbert Arenas spitballing on his Twitter account about Gungate while crossing that line to where keeping it real goes wrong:
everyone knows about my troubles last yr..the only reason u do know about it is becuz my money making days were up...as long as ur making sumbody lots of money they will let u do what ever u want..when ur time is up they will expose u to the world. if u ever hear about anything in a locker rm is becuz sumbody in high power wants it to get out...once all the free shoes are gone..i will be attacked by the media...becuz theres nothing to be gain anymore. i know what ppl are sayin..i brought ....into the locker rm..theres been full blow paint ball shoot outs in locker rms, being in the nba u see everything...what i got in trouble for ive seen over a dozens times.. i did give them the tool to take me down so its know ones fault but mines..and ive learned and got wiser from it..like i said ive made mistakes when u feel like u can do anything u want u try..and i got smacked down to reality when i went to far, so lets move on..if u cant forgive me then f--k off..if u have forgiving me..I MIGHT mess up in the future jk i know i will lmaoooo
Like I said, when you get a guy like Arenas on something like Twitter, you get realness, but there's a flip side to that.

This guy really doesn't get it
First the Wizards treat him like a human adult and lets him dictate when he will come back from injury/surgery (it is his knee and all…) and then blames them for letting him return too early and not letting the injury heal.
Now he blames the Wizards for letting a story about his felony gun posession charge get out? Were the Wizards supposed to keep this story hush hush? In one sentence he blames them for taking him down, and in the next sentence he says it’s nobody’s fault but his.
It’s like dating a girl, at first all her quirks are cute, now they drive you batshit insane. Except in this case, it’s Gilbert who is batshit insane. Grow up. You can learn a lot about maturity from John Wall who is damn near a decade younger than you.

call me a cynic but
if Gil had been averaging 28 and the team was in 3rd place, I think the story might not have gotten out.

Why the Capitals?
at least recently, everything has gone right with them with the regular season at least. We’re just the pre-2011 Mavericks, NHL version.
As always with Gil, kernels of truth in a pile of poop.

That was my 1st question
when this story came out. How did this incident leave the locker room?
Come on guys it is the NBA. I am sure there are more guns and weed brought into the locker room then a cookout in PG county.
In hindsight I am glad it got out. (Because it was the catalyst that blew that team up, which was going nowhere)
So Gil has a point on this one!
exactly
I of course could be wrong, but I would be really surprised if Gilbert Arenas was the first and only NBA player that brought guns into the locker room. In fact, I’d be surprised if there weren’t some players that bring guns with them everywhere they go. I actually thought Gil was being pretty honest here, and this was one of the first times he’s genuinely admitted that he made a mistake, and took his fame too far.
His tweets about women make me way more uncomfortable than this does.
If I bring guns into the office
In a briefcase, and lock it in my desk, and the only people who see it are people who know and trust me (and vice versa) and I don’t do anything irresponsible with them, then I’ll almost certainly get away with it. If I challenge a coworker to a dual with it during an angry confrontation, I’m certain to get fired (and probably arrested). Gil clearly doesn’t understand these kinds of “subtle” differences…

well
i am not trying to defend ole Gilbert, here, because he clearly did something very stupid, and anytime someone is so careless about a gun it is really just plain dangerous. but he didn’t challenge anyone to a duel.
Um
The events as I understand them were that he and Javaris were having a heated dispute in which Javaris hinted at the introduction of gunplay. Later, Javaris came into the locker room (where Gilbert was) to find with two guns at his locker with a note that said “pick one”. Whether it’s in jest or not (which honestly IS kind of funny — too bad Javaris wasn’t in a playing mood), that’s still a challenge to a dual.

You have no fame, no money, no lifestyle like NBA players have. You can’t use such a bland metaphor to connect the two.
by Ball with Wall on Jul 17, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions
You don't know anything about me
Anyway, I understand what you’re trying to say, but my metaphor analogy conveys my point despite any differences between the scenarios — Gil seems bothered because other guys have had guns in the locker room and gotten away with it. He’s doesn’t get that he crossed a line that others didn’t.

kind of sad
im a little disappointed that gilbert hasn’t moved on from this yet, he just needs to let it go and live his life. everyone loves a comeback story, winning heals all wounds. heres to hoping he can turn his career and attitude around.
I love it and I miss him
He did something wrong, no doubt about it, but there isn’t a single other guy in the NBA who would be as honest as Gil is on Twitter. He actually made a good point about this the other day, do you want to follow him, warts and jokes and all, or just read someone like Lebron or Wade tweet “good workout” over and over and then give some rehearsed interview on ESPN where all they talk about is how they want to see the team improve (even though there are obviously other things that they think about all day). Gil might not be the best player or person in the league, not by a long shot, but he’s definitely the most entertaining and that’s really what sports is all about at the end of the day.

What's Getting Over it?
Is it just never talking about that situation again? I don’t think that’s getting over it. It’s not like he goes out of his way to bring it up everyday. It’s twitter, he talks about everything, obviously this is going to get brought up every now and then.

he may have truth in what he says, but he is taking shots and blaming us and the team for things that he did.
yet he still acknowledges that he did wrong. At some point, you have to stop being contradictory in that manner.

You don't typically hear about conflicts in a locker room - he's right about that
But the idea of management “wanting to get him”… get real, dude.

Dude really has not learned anything
…except maybe not to bring guns in the locker room. If you’re excuse is “Other people did it but I got in trouble for it because I make too much money” then you really just don’t get life. The guy is completely turned in on himself. Now he’s calling his kids “brats” on his Twitter account.
Good example, Gil. Get a laugh at all costs, even if it’s at the expense of your kids, wife/girlfriend/whatever you call her, employer, etc.
To everyone else: being “real” or “honest” doesn’t make you a good person. Especially if you’re honestly a bad person!
by crossward on Jul 15, 2011 9:54 AM EDT reply actions 2 recs
Meh
kids can be brats. Every parent knows this and has made jokes to that effect.
Not solely directed at you, but I get the impression a lot of people in the DC area think Gil should constantly act ashamed and joyless after his transgressions. Shame is the least useful human emotion.
I take some umbrage with this recent recounting, but only because hd claims responsibility while pointing the finger elsewhere. I think it’s pretty much true though…I just think you can’t have it both ways.
by Jim America on Jul 15, 2011 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions
Still
It does no good to call your kids brats publicly, regardless if they are, and especially if they are young. It’s not like this is the first time Gil has done something like this.
I don’t think Gil should constantly act joyless and ashamed — but he should act as if he has learned something. His actions show he hasn’t. He’s still flippant towards the whole thing, he still points fingers at everyone (no pun intended), nothing is ever his fault or at least not entirely. If he’s truly humbled from this experience he has a funny way of showing it by dragging everyone else through the mud. Being fun-loving Gil is one thing. Being a malcontent is another.
Even if some higher up in the Wiz organization ratted him out and even if they jumped on the opportunity to run him out of dodge… so what? Does that somehow make him less responsible? It’s like standing before the judge and saying, “Everyone else was speeding!” You’re guilty, Gil. Accept it. Learn from it. Stop trying to dodge (or share) responsibility. Move on.
by crossward on Jul 15, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I don't really disagree
And I haven’t seen the brat comment, but I’m guessing I wouldn’t care about that.
I just think he gets a lot of shit from a lot of people a lot of the time. We say he should move past it, but it is constantly being thrown back in his face. At the end of the day, it was a joke…it was Gil taking things less than seriously which has always been what got him in trouble. I guess I feel like I can understand that giving his childhood…which he never really had…and the fact that he saw some pretty serious shit…which could make a lot of this other stuff seem a lot less serious than it does to others.
I’m not defending his juvenile behavior, his cavalier attitude about firearms, his misogynistic tweets on women, or anything else. I just think some of the vitriol about him is overkill and silly…again, not directed at you. I also think he felt like he got left out in the cold over a joke turned bad when he had been trumped up as the golden boy for years for marketing purposes…again his background is reflected in this view. The reality is that he’s always been the same guy.
I'm confused
He says the Wiz were sick of him, so they leaked gungate. If you were EG (or someone in power) and you were sick of him, you try to trade him away. No gungate makes it easier to trade him away, and there is a chance you could get some value.
Gungate made him much harder to trade. I mean, on this blog there are always talks of crazy trades going on—but with Gil we all pretty much knew that there would only be one team that could take him.
I think this is just Gil being Gil—-saying things with the intent to get a rise out of people
by HIBACHI GOLD on Jul 15, 2011 10:38 AM EDT reply actions 5 recs
Exactly
There might be some truth in saying that if they want you out somethings might leak but this gungate story would not have been worth the gain.
It cost the franchise a lot of bad publicity and money too plus for the longest time he was believed to be intradable. So why would you risk getting stuck with a max contract on a suspended player that is extreemly hard to trade?!

Dear Gilbert
I sincerely and profusely apologize that I didn’t forgive you for the gun incident and giving us the worst season in Wizards history. I know EVERYONE brings guns to the arena and shows them off at will. But of course, you were the star player two years ago. We were just going to let you do whatever you wanted because you were our number one star, just like other teams let their number one stars bring guns to the arena, tap on those thick butts that some of those hot team employees have and call them anything they want. Damn! some of those girls are fine!!! Hell, I guess the star players can take steroids and if their performance is so good on the court, if a positive test shows up, maybe the team can pull off a Diana Taurasi and get the lab in trouble instead!
At the end of the day, I as a fan of course have to just let go of the gun situation, merely because the ping pong balls fell our way and that John Wall is now the franchise player and the second coming of Jesus, who hasn’t done anything wrong in his life! Oh yes, I just forgot, you’re right Gil. John brought guns to the Verizon Center to protect himself despite the fact that guns are illegal in DC and he’s also probably underage, I forgot that he fondled women in a resort during the offseason against their will, and he got more muscular this offseason from taking some testosterone and HGH shots! But of course, he’s our franchise player who is healthy right now and money is to be made out of him. Ted’s gonna have his back, and so John can do whatever he wants! You are the voice of reason Gilbert. I hit a state of nirvana. You aren’t the bad guy. Mr. Pollin, Ted, and Ernie and fans like me are. I will acknowledge, I am the worst Wizards fan in the world for being angry at you for this. You of course are the star who put our team back on the map after MJ got fired! You are the first NBA star to be a blogging extraordinaire, and now the King of Twitter! I acknowledge you always tell it how it is, and you should be able to say whatever you want! Awww. I’m just so sorry. I guess I am the one who must be asking for forgiveness. I must shut up and just accept everything that comes, and just pay my money to watch a bad team with no direction. You of course are blameless. I am just so. so. sorry…. I need to go cry now.
Wait a minute, I think the nirvana was a false alarm…. I think Caron and Antawn just smacked me upside the head and they told me something different. They told me that they worked their asses off and bought us a playoff berth that we arguably didn’t deserve in 2008. They didn’t have the most flamboyant of personalities, but they played as hard and as well as they could so when you came back for YOUR OWN ILL-ADVISED REHAB which got your knee in WORSE SHAPE, perhaps we could have done something special. John Wall also by all accounts is leading the wrong way. Oh I just got smacked again by Antonio Daniels, the backup point guard that season too! He was truly an unsung hero. Just a warrior on the court. He may not have been a 20 ppg scorer, but he was very good at controlling the ball and kept composure for us! Not to mention when he couldn’t find an NBA gig last season, he played his ass off in the D League for a head coach (who was a WOMAN) and finally got a 10 day with the Sixers! You meanwhile think you were still entitled to be the star of the Wizards even LAST SEASON and you also think you should have been playing 30 minutes a game for the Orlando Magic! JJ Redick, the guy most guys on this board hate only because he played at Duke, played a lot better than you last year, on BOTH sides of the ball!
Gilbert, you had your opportunity here, and you got injured. I get that it happens. Sometimes you can’t get back from them 100% ever. Fine, but at least try hard when you’re back on the court and I can live with that. You weren’t playing too badly in 2009-2010…..
But of course, oh yes. You only played 32 games out of 82, because you got suspended for the gun incident that we turned you in for because we wanted a way out of your contract. So you’ve apologized for doing it, but now you’re saying that all the other teams’ players are doing it. And because of your past injuries, I guess Mr. Pollin’s family just wanted to find a way to just stick it to you, and they found their way by publicizing gungate. BS! Last time I checked, I think the players were told CLEARLY that they weren’t supposed to bring guns in there. Apparently teammates were very close to the situation where you wanted Javaris to PICK 1. If teammates weren’t involved, then why the hell were they all testifying in court, some at length? Jesus Christ! So when you apologized to the judge, you submitted reference letters from many fans and other associates. I only found one basketball player who could write a letter for you, and that’s Alana Beard, who last time I checked, wasn’t on the Wizards and isn’t an NBA player. WHERE’S CARON? WHERE’S ANTAWN? WHERE’S RICHARD JEFFERSON? WHERE’S ANYONE ON ANY NBA TEAM!? I can only interpret it as this. You hurt our team in 2009-2010, and you did it in such a fashion to the point where you’re not worthy of getting that respect back. And you’re not getting it back from me. ESPECIALLY NOW!!!!!!!!!!
I’m sick and tired of hearing you talk, taking shots indirectly and directly at our team and at Mr. Pollin, and it’s all your doing, and you acknowledge it. Am I a fan who thinks you need to stop talking so you don’t hurt yourself?! YOU’RE GODDAMN RIGHT I AM! Do you think I’m gonna forgive you for gungate, even if we got John Wall after it? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF AND MAKING THE REST OF YOUR NBA CAREER WORTHWHILE AND HOPEFULLY YOU CAN HELP A TEAM GET TOWARDS A CHAMPIONSHIP!!! I THINK WE’RE DOING JUST FINE AND WE DON’T TRY TO THROW OUR STARS INTO THE MUD IN TOTAL DYSFUNCTION LIKE THE REDSKINS! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its ridiculous to insert logic into Gilbertology
but unless the Wizards sought to void Arenas’s contract (which they didn’t), there would be no point in leaking the Gungate story. Gilbert thinks that the team deliberately made him a toxic asset that would be untradable for nearly a year. Come on.

They want to get rid of him due to performance issues not misconduct.
but it doesn’t make them feel any better.
If management wanted to "get" Gilbert Arenas..
They’d have terminated his contract for cause. Union or no union, they had enough to do it. Funny thing is, the only reason Arenas makes his current salary – one of the largest in the league – is because Wizards management showed some restraint and chose not to void his contract.
by satchmore on Jul 16, 2011 3:25 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
The Union would have fought this and given how vaguely worded that the "moral turpitude" crap was
it is unrealistic that the contract would have been voided. The front office did discuss it however but they wouldn’t do it, most likely because of this.
Don’t tell me that Billy Hunter is going to still make the players unaccountable for their non-basketball actions by making them unfireable. But I bet you he’s going to try to keep things that way….

the role we played was
by erasing his picture from every piece of publicity around the Verizon Center and online, just like the NBA has banned the players’ names and pictures wherever possible.
Also, I bet Ted was in favor of trying to get rid of Gilbert when the incident happened as his group owned nearly half the team at the time. Of course when he and the Pollin family decided that it wasn’t the way to go, he tried to make some amends, but there’s no way business will be as usual after that with him.
