Warriors Buy Wizards' D-League Affiliate
FYI. This leaves the (Washington) Wizards without a D-League affiliate for the time being. I know the team has at least made noises about becoming more involved in the D-League recently, but now I'm curious to see where Leonsis/Grunfeld, et al. go from here.

Ted has inquired about buying a franchise. Maybe with the one in Utah folding, he sees an opportunity.
Dakota was way too far.

The problem is
there aren’t many available teams that are much closer, if at all. The most realistic one that’s within a reasonable distance is Fort Wayne (Maine is, for all intents and purposes, Boston’s minor league team). After that it’s teams like Reno, Idaho, New Mexico, etc. Leonsis could move the team, but that was true of Dakota as well; I’ve always thought that distance was just an excuse.
Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.
I like the idea of a Wizards D-League affiliate closer to the DC fan base… I think the fans would much rather watch up and coming Wizards prospects playing on a D-League affiliate locally- rather than trying to keep up with them remote…
The D-League seems to be very “western” oriented… Not a lot of teams east of the Mississippi. I kinda understand – travel etc… But it seems to me that in a perfect world there would be an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference with teams that are really in the East and West. Right now there are EC teams like Sioux Falls, and Iowa that really should be in the West…
Jon L. – there are only 4 teams in the East, right? Are any other Eastern Conference teams planning on buying or owning their own D-League teams…?
I used to have super powers until my psychiatrist took them away.
I personally feel that for the D League, we should aim for 30 teams, one to each NBA team.
But I do think that some of these teams should be in the cities like the Sioux Falls’s of the world, which are basically completely cut out of the pro sports world without a D League team. We also could put a team in other North American markets that to date haven’t been seriously considered like San Juan, Montreal, Calgary, and Tijuana. I won’t put in Juarez due to security concerns.
And I don't think every NBA team should be forced to own a D League affiliate
Hershey Trust (yes, part of the chocolate man) owns the Bears, not Ted’s partners.
The D-League has two conferences
But Dakota was in the East, so…sort of. There were several more teams on the east coast and in the south when the league first started, but most of them either folded or moved. I’m sure the league would like to put more teams on the east coast, and there certainly seems to be growing interest among Eastern Conference NBA teams.
As for which NBA teams might be interested in a one-to-one affiliation in the future, Scott Schroeder is the man to ask. Boston is really close with its affiliate in Maine, as the Red Claws prez/GM is a former Celtics executive and their most recent head coach is Danny Ainge’s kid who just got promoted to Celtics assistant coach. It’s easy to see them perhaps buying Maine outright, although given the current situation they’re getting most or all of the benefit without any of the cost. Another potential team (this is my opinion, not based on anything that I’ve heard because I haven’t heard anything) might be the Bulls; they’ve signed a few D-League type players the past few years (Chris Richard, John Lucas III, Derrick Byars, etc.) and are reasonably close with their affiliate in Iowa.

I mean
couldn’t Leonsis start a franchise out of the the phone booth or another close arena. I just feel like he has made noise in terms of the d league. Shoot isn’t he involved in groupon? he’s got the cash.
He does have the cash, and his partners also are loaded too. Big time.
But does owning a D League make business sense for him as a standalone product for some particular niche? This niche would be the group of customers who would attend the games as season ticket holders.
Right now, even if we had our own team, players can be called up by any of the other 29 teams, and we didn’t just call up guys from the Dakota Wizards. D League affiliates right now are nothing more than teams where we can ship our rookie and 2nd year players to get some more PT.
Baltimore
Maybe they want to have a D League team close to DC by bringing a D League team to Baltimore when the new arena goes up?
